1 THE BI-MONTHLY BULLETIN OF CENTURY HIGH SCHOOL Message from the Principal: Dear Families of Century High School students, April/May 2018 I hope everyone had a wonderful spring vacation with their students. By the end of March, our students will have completed forecasting for next year s classes. The spring sports season has been in full swing for several weeks. I want to congratulate all of our winter sport teams for their successes this season, especially the Century Wrestling Team, Century Girls Basketball, Century Cheer and Century Dance who had stand out seasons. Our fall and winter sports and activities have been exciting, and I am impressed by our students positive support of their peers and the community support for our students and school. Spring in high schools is a time of excitement and anticipation. Students look forward to prom, seniors look forward to graduation and underclassmen cannot wait to move up a class. Many of our staff members are involved in the planning of year-end activities that honor the successes and accomplishments of our students. Like many schools throughout the nation at this time of year, we also watch for senior-itis. As the end of the year approaches, (only ten weeks left for seniors), seniors see an end to high school and can begin to lose sight of their efforts to succeed in their schooling. It is important for seniors, as well as other classes, to keep focused for the remainder of the year, as lack of focus may affect their graduation status and preparation for college or other post-secondary opportunities. Through March and early April, our students ran campaigns for ASB and class office positions. The walls in the school were filled with innovative slogans and posters, and the television in central featured colorful and eye-catching slides. Jag TV was able to run speeches for the elections. The students who ran for offices put a lot of time and effort in to their campaigns. They are dedicated to help make Century High School a great place for our students to be and learn. All students win by learning through this process, and I look forward to seeing them become leaders in our local city, state and federal government in the future. Beginning in March, we are assessing our Junior students on the Common Core State Standards using the SBAC assessments. Our students are assessed in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. The testing window is longer in order to better support classroom instruction. These assessments are one of the measuring systems we use to assess how our students are doing in meeting state standards, compare with other students throughout the state of Oregon, and also to assess the programs we offer at Century High School. Passing these tests completes students Essential Skills requirements to attain a diploma. If you have a senior at home, please have them stop in at the counseling center to look at all of the scholarship opportunities. There are many local and national scholarships our students may qualify for to help reduce the cost of attending college. If your student is a senior, you will also want to look at the Seniors Class of 2018 page in the newsletter. There is a lot of important information regarding upcoming events there. Finally, I want to thank the volunteers who help make important supports happen for the students of Century. The support that our volunteers provide for all of our programs has been tremendous, and we are grateful to them. Sincerely, Martha Guise Principal

4 SENIORS Class of 2018 Hillsboro School Board policy for senior students walking at graduation include: Completion of all course requirements with passing grades. All fees and fines paid. All textbooks and library books returned or paid. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your student s counselor or an administrator. Senior Project High school seniors in the Hillsboro School District are required to complete a senior project in order to graduate. The requirements for these projects are set by the District and the Oregon Department of Education. Students enrolled in a senior-level Focused Program or CAP program have an opportunity to work on these senior projects in those classes. Those seniors not in a CAP or focused program will be required to take a Senior Seminar class. This seminar class will provide the support these students will need to design and implement their senior projects. These projects will represent the interest, knowledge, and skills they have gained in high school and their visions for their future education and work. Keenan Myers & Gabe McKee - 5th in Duo Interpretations Seniors Alyssa Bui and Mikaela Grover have made it to the final four for the Metro West position on the 2018 Rose Festival Court. The other two finalists are from Glencoe and Westview Century staff member, Scott Kellar was nominated for the Hillsboro Chamber Crystal Apple Award for outstanding work for Century students and Century High School.
