2 INTRODUCTION FOR STUDENTS For the first time, you have choices about what you would like to study at school. How well you achieve at the end of Key Stage 4 will depend on: How well you do in your Teacher Assessments at the end of Year 9; Which subjects you choose to study in Years 10 and 11; How hard you work throughout Key Stage 4 most subjects have coursework elements, which means you will be producing work for your final grades from the beginning of Year 10. There are some subjects all students have to continue to study these are COMPULSORY SUBJECTS. You will be able to choose three other courses from a wide variety of subjects. Read the information in this booklet carefully; Choose subjects which you are good at and which you enjoy; ASK your teachers about subjects you might be interested in find out what the KS4 course involves; Please discuss any queries with Mr Mercer (Head of Lower School). 3 KS4 Learning Pathways CORE (English, Maths, RE, PE, PSHEE) Science: Science Biology, or BTec Chemistry, Physics Option Choices: BTecs GCSEs Diplomas You will be given a sheet to fill in, similar to the example below. Put a 1, 2, 3 and 4 (Reserve) next to the subjects you would like to study. You may not study Art and Textiles (they are different aspects of the same subject). Think carefully about ICT most of you will need IT skills in the future. In nearly all cases you will be able to study 3 of your four choices. Bear in mind that a course will not run if only a few students have opted for it and that you may be interviewed for a course if it is very popular. 4 CORE SUBJECTS These are compulsory subjects subjects which you must continue to study in Years 10 and 11. ENGLISH AND ENGLISH LITERATURE Students sit two English papers worth 40% of the final grade. Students will also complete three written assignments under controlled conditions worth 30%. Speaking and listening activities and the study of spoken language are worth 30%. English Literature students sit two examinations worth 75% in total and there is a coursework component of 25%. Students study poetry, prose and drama texts. Both English courses are modular. MATHEMATICS GCSE Mathematics is changing in The examination papers from 2011 onwards will contain a greater proportion of functional style questions, which will involve more real-world scenarios. Students will be expected to break down complex problems into smaller steps and to write reports on their observations. There are two tiers of entry, Foundation (G-C) and Higher (D-A*). The Higher Tier is recommended for students aiming for grade B-A* and wishing to study Mathematics beyond GCSE. Mathematics is an important pre-requisite to most careers, and we aim to equip students with the necessary skills and competencies required by employers and further education establishments Most of our students will be entered early for GCSE English and Maths at the end of Year 10. SCIENCE There are two Science routes, worth two, three or four GCSEs at the end of Year 11. Students will be selected for these courses after the internal KS4 Transition Assessments in Year 9. AQA Biology, Chemistry and Physics Each science subject is worth one GCSE grade. BTEC in Science This course provides a vocationally related qualification and has been designed to provide a broad education as a foundation both for employment and for further and higher education. The scheme of assessment consists of six portfolio units, assessed over two years. This qualification can be achieved at either pass, merit or distinction level and is equivalent to two or four GCSE passes at grades C, B and A respectively. 4

5 ICT ACROSS THE CURRICULUM ICT is included as an element of most KS4 courses. Students are given the opportunity to use ICT in a way that supports and enhances study across a range of subjects. RELIGIOUS STUDIES All students study GCSE Religious Studies during Years 10 and 11, covering a number of units on a range of social, moral and philosophical issues looked at from a variety of religious perspectives. Students will be entered for two external examinations at the end of Year 11. PHYSICAL EDUCATION During Year 10, students are able to opt from a variety of activities including soccer, basketball, badminton, weight training, table tennis, trampolining, hockey, step and dance. PSHEE AND CITIZENSHIP All students follow a course in Personal, Social, Health and Enterprise Education with their form tutors for one period a week throughout Year 10 and Year 11. Students also compile evidence for their HHS portfolio, focusing on personal strengths and achievements. Citizenship is integral to the PSHEE programme and is covered in many subject areas and extra-curricular activities. All other subjects are OPTIONAL this means you choose whether or not to take them. Generally, courses studied in Years 10 and 11 are either GCSE or BTec courses. GCSEs are usually assessed through examinations, although many also have coursework elements. They are graded A*-C. BTecs (Level 2) are assessed through 100% coursework and are graded Distinction*, Distinction, Merit and Pass. They are vocational qualifications, which means the skills and knowledge learnt through these subjects are relevant to the world of work. They are equivalent to TWO or FOUR GCSE passes at Grade C and above. 5

6 OPTIONAL SUBJECTS: GCSE ART & DESIGN CATERING Students produce at least two projects which form a portfolio of artwork. Within this they explore different cultures, organic forms, futurist landscapes and contemporary issues. Students develop and work with a range of techniques and processes such as; printmaking, ceramics and 3D, observational drawing and painting. The final grade consists of: Coursework 60% (portfolio), Controlled Test 40% The course is designed to give students an opportunity to extend and apply their practical skills and knowledge of the catering industry. Students will be provided with a variety of experiences whilst concentrating on the main areas of food production and food service. Assessment: 60% of the final mark is from coursework, with a 40% examination. DANCE This course is practical based, exploring skills such as choreography, performance and dance analysis. Assessment: Unit 1 Appreciation of dance 20% Unit 2 Set dance (solo) 20% Unit 3 Group performance 20% Unit 4 Choreography 40% DRAMA Students follow the OCR Drama specification at GCSE level, an exciting and challenging course which develops students drama skills in all areas of the art form. The course is assessed through practical and written coursework, and a practical exam. Unit 1: Page to Stage 30% Unit 2: Devising Drama for Performance 30% Unit 3: Practical Examination - 40% 6

7 FRENCH Students are tested in Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. There are two tiers of entry at GCSE. Tiers can vary between the four skills, to take account of students aptitudes. Assessment for all students will involve 30% written assessment, 30% speaking assessment and 40% terminal examination in Listening and Reading. It is strongly recommended that sets X and I continue with a language at GCSE to help future career prospects and University entry. GEOGRAPHY This course provides students with the opportunity to develop their understanding of the challenges facing the modern world at a variety of scales from local to global. Students study two units - Physical Geography and Human Geography - and sit one examination based on each unit. Topic choices include, natural hazards, rivers, population, the development gap and tourism. Students also carry out a fieldwork investigation in preparation for the controlled assessment worth 25% of the final grade. GERMAN Students are tested in Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. For each skill there are two tiers of entry at GCSE. Tiers can vary between the four skills to take account of students aptitudes. Assessment for all students will involve 30% written assessment, 30% speaking assessment and 40% terminal examination in listening and reading. It is strongly recommended that Sets X and I continue with a language at GCSE to help with future career prospects and University entry. GRAPHIC PRODUCTS This course is concerned with the development of the skills, knowledge and graphical understanding required when handling and studying graphical production techniques. Students develop skills in a wide range of techniques used for the communication of ideas and solutions through drawings, diagrams and models, ranging from traditional drawing methods to extensive use of ICT equipment and software. Students use a variety of modelling materials to design and produce high quality graphical projects for marketing and advertising purposes. The written examination is worth 40% of the final grade and Design and Making Practice coursework is worth 60%. 7

8 HISTORY This course provides students with the opportunity to study fascinating periods of 20 th century British, American and German history; from the experiences of people living through World War I and World War II to the experiences of ordinary Germans living under Nazi rule. Two coursework assignments account for 25% of the final grade. Students also sit two exam papers worth 75% of the final grade. RESISTANT MATERIALS This course provides opportunities for students to carry out designs and make products using metal, plastics and wood. Students are based in the workshop areas for the practical sessions and will have access to the graphics and ICT facilities during the theory sessions. All students complete a project which involves the completion of an A3 design folder and a finished 3D product. SOCIOLOGY Assessment: Coursework accounts for 60% of the final grade and consists of an A3 design folder and a 3D project. The final examination is worth 40% of the final grade. This course offers the opportunity for students to explore a wide range of knowledge about the society in which they live. Sociology is exciting, interesting and relevant to students lives. Particular areas of focus include; crime and deviance, social inequalities, mass media, education and families. Assessment takes the form of two written papers accounting for 50% each of the final grade. TEXTILES Students produce at least two projects, with accompanying samples and preparation studies, including research of other artists and cultures. The projects include areas such as fashion design, fashion accessories, fabric design and interior design, using techniques such as screen-printing, lino-printing, embroidery, machine embroidery, Batik, fabric painting, fabric manipulations, transfer printing, heat transfer painting, Appliqué, and silk painting. Coursework accounts for 60% of the final grade and the Controlled Test 40%. 8

9 OPTIONAL SUBJECTS: BTec (Level 2) CHILDREN S CARE LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT This course is equivalent to 2 GCSEs. There are three units: Unit 1: Understanding Children s Development Unit 2: Keeping Children Safe Unit 3: Communication with Children and Adults Assessment: The qualification is coursework based. There is also a work experience element which must total at least 60 hours over the two years and which must be carried out in an early years setting. CREATIVE MEDIA PRODUCTION During the course students study three compulsory units and four specialist units. Students experience a range of media types and learn about print media, advertising and the film industry. INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) This course continues the work started during Year 9 and leads to a qualification equivalent to four GCSE passes. The course consists of a mixture of practical and theory work assessed through externally verified portfolios. Students have the opportunity to relate their work in the classroom to the use of ICT in the wider world. 9

10 MUSIC The BTEC offers a wide choice of musical experiences. It is an introductory qualification that focuses on aspects of employment within the music industry. At the heart of it though lies you a musician someone enthused with a passion for sound. The areas of musical study, Performing, Composing, Listening and Appraising are central to the course and we are keen to develop your skills as a musician and a technician. The two year course (equivalent to two GCSEs) will introduce you to the Music Industry and some of the realities of working in a recording studio environment. It is a course for musicians and for students who may go onto a career in the industry. SPORT Over the two year course, students will study 6 modules: The Sports Industry; Health, Safety and Injury; Preparation for Sport; The Body in Sport; Sports Leadership Skills and Practical Sport. This course combines theory and practical and is an ideal start to a career in sport. The Common Prospectus Some students will have the opportunity to study for part of the week at another local school or at Accrington & Rossendale College. The following courses are likely to be available, equivalent to ONE option choice. They will take place on Monday afternoon in Year 10 (Thursday afternoons in Year 11). Transport will be provided to the venues, but students will have to make their own arrangements to get home. o GCSE Law at Norden High School. o BTec Level 2 in Creative Media Production at Accrington & Rossendale College. o BTec Level 2 in Animation at Accrington Academy. Construction and Vehicle Maintenance & Repair (both Level 1) are also available at Accrington & Rossendale College and Horticulture (Level 1) at Alder Grange. These will take place all day on Fridays and are equivalent to TWO option choices. 10

11 DIPLOMAS Diplomas are an exciting new qualification, recognised by universities and employers. A Level 2 diploma is equivalent to 6 7 GCSE passes at grade C and above. Diplomas have been devised by employers as well as teachers and create a fantastic opportunity for some students to combine classroom based learning with visits and work experience. In addition, students study Functional Skills in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT this means using Maths, English and ICT skills in real life situations. DIPLOMA IN SOCIETY, HEALTH & DEVELOPMENT Students study four sectors: The Children & Young Persons Workforce Health Adult Social Care Justice The aim is to provide students with the skills needed to have a successful career in one of these sectors. The course is designed to bring learning to life and consists of a combination of classroom-based work, visits, presentations by people working in these sectors and work experience. The course comprises of nine units which will be marked by your course tutor. There is one examination module. This diploma is equivalent to TWO option choices. DIPLOMA IN SPORT & ACTIVE LEISURE This Diploma is an innovative approach to sport education. As part of a select group you will get a detailed insight into every aspect of the sport and leisure industry by emulating the London 2010 Olympic bid. Your team will design a replica bid for Hyndburn and Rossendale. You will be part of the design team for new stadiums and locations, be involved in the sporting media and advertising to sell your plans and develop campaigns to encourage participation in sport and active leisure. You will have first hand experience with employers and the sport and leisure industry. It is a superb option for any students who have a genuine interest in sport and want to experience the world of sport and active leisure. Please note: Most of this course is taught at local schools and local sport / leisure venues. It is equivalent to all THREE option choices. 11

12 If you are interested in any of the Common Prospectus courses, including the diplomas, you must speak to Mr Mercer, who will give you a sheet with additional information. There are limited places and competition is strong, so you may be interviewed for these courses. GCSE Statistics and Double Award PE / Sport are also available as Fast-track courses a Maths or PE teacher will speak to you personally if they feel you will be suitable for these courses. We offer a wide range of A Level courses which includes everything from Physics to PE and Mathematics to Music. We also offer a varied selection of more vocational Level 3 BTEC courses such as Hospitality and Catering, ICT, Forensic Science, Business and Media. There is something for everyone! Our belief is that students achieve most when they are happy and we offer much more than just our academic courses. Sixth Form students have the chance to join societies and clubs, participate in sports teams and extra-curricular activities, be involved in community work, take part in trips and holidays and be part of the Student Management Team. 12
