The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Citizen s Concerns Student Advisory Update Members of the Student Advisory Committee reviewed recent and upcoming events which included an athletic update, homecoming, spirit week, the recent dedication of the peace poles and the upcoming rededication of the Seanie Shack as well as the upcoming 5K this weekend. 2 Superintendent s Report Superintendent Hamilton reported on recent and upcoming events which included the JFK Boosterthon Fundraiser which raised over $32,000, the dedication of the peace poles took place, HCAM put out a Public Service Announcement with our students about world peace, teachers had professional development last week, the MCAS 2.0 embargo on data was lifted and the information allowing the information to be shared with teachers first and then it will be shared with the school committee via a presentation, and reminded everyone of the upcoming JFK Fall walk to school. Opening of School Report John F. Kennedy Elementary School Principal Stevens stated that the John F. Kennedy Elementary School had a great start to the academic year. This was our first summer at the new school complex. The extended program took place and all went well. During the summer they had 41 students enroll and another 11 since the beginning of the school year which totals 52 new students. Currently the John F. Kennedy Elementary School has 666 students as of today compared to 621 at this point last year. As a result, they are constantly reviewing class sizes. Principal Stevens is currently looking to hire two long-term substitute teachers to cover teacher leaves. They had a great first day of school and the bus routes were smoothed out. They also had a fire drill and are using the same curriculum program with the addition of the Making Meaning program. They continue to use constant contact to relay information to parents, after school programs have started. Continue positive program with Police Department which includes Fist Pump day which they are looking at scheduling more. Champions program is going well with very positive feedback. Opening of School Report Holbrook Middle-High School Principal Stevenson stated that they had an open house which resulted in a lot of positive feedback from parents about their comfort with the new technology. There are on average are students in each of the core classrooms. Hiring is finally complete with nine new staff members and one internal transfer. The theme for this year is Positive Culture. The staff met through the summer to best address areas that need work and were able to allocate resources and professional development around social justice and bias. A school-wide assembly with Mr. Scott on social justice is scheduled for October 2 nd. Middle School advisors were appointed. Fall sports began on the new field which was well attended. With the expansion of the video production class they have been able to start a new program called Code Blue which highlights topics that impact the culture of the school, the staff has been working diligently to get ready for the upcoming NEASC visit on Tuesday, October 16 th. 3 High School, effective August 27, Shay O Toole, 0.8 History Teacher, Holbrook Middle-High School, effective August 29, 2018 Financial Update FY19 Update Status quo moving along smoothly. Present Student Activity Accounts for Holbrook Middle-High School and John F. Kennedy Elementary School Ms. Lugo stated that it would be good practice to review these accounts every year to review the account balances. 1 st Reading of School Committee Policy Changes Related to Student Activity Accounts Policy JJF-E-1- Student Activities Funds Management Ms. Lugo distributed policy JJF-E-1 highlighting the elimination of the $5,000 maximum checking account balance for the South School since it merged into the John F. Kennedy Elementary School. 1 st Reading of School Committee Policy Changes Related to Eliminating Maximum Checking Account Balance for South Elementary School Policy JJF-E-2 Holbrook Public Schools Student Activity Accounts Policies and Procedures This went with one above Ms. Lugo distributed policy JJF-E-2 highlighting the elimination of the $5,000 maximum checking account balance for the South School since it merged into the John F. Kennedy Elementary School. 1 st Reading of School Committee Policy Changes Related to Graduating Class Funds Policy JJF Student Activity Accounts Ms. Lugo also distributed policy JJF highlighting the changes she has suggested for Graduating Class Funds. Her recommendation is to encourage the graduating class to spend down their money and not leave a balance behind. If they do, they would have 90 days to decide what they would like done with the funds. If they do not than the remaining monies would be voted on by the School Committee. Ms. Harer stated that she would like to see the monies passed to the next graduating class. Ms. Lugo stated she has heard there is a lot of unfairness that she has heard about with handling it this way. The class that just gets the money does not fundraise as much as the class that donated it and that is not fair to them. Principal Stevenson would like any remaining balances after the 90 days go into a discretionary fund to be used to honor what the class had intended to do with the money. Mr. Flanagan stated that the goal should be to have each class spend all of their money so there is none left behind. Junior and Senior Class Out-of-State Field Trip Request to New York City, April 12, 2019 to April 14, 2019 The Senior Class Advisor, Kelly Grant presented the two night New York City overnight out-ofstate field trip during April vacation. 4 Formal Membership Request to Join the North River Collaborative effective July 1, 2019 Ms. Lugo stated that as a result of the Charms Collaborative disbanding the Holbrook Public Schools would like to formally become a member of the North River Collaborative in Rockland, Massachusetts effective July 1, st Reading of Hiring Employment Payment Policies Superintendent Hamilton presented the changes to the Hiring Employment Payment Policies that came directly from our attorney. Ed reform gave the superintendent the authority to make these decisions. Trumpet Donation from Kelly Storlazzi Ms. Storlazzi would like to donate a trumpet to help support the school s music program. Determine Voting Delegates for MASC/MASS Joint Conference, November 7-10, 2018 Voting delegate Barbara Davis Alternate delegate John Flanagan School Committee Sub-Committee member report School Committee members report Ms. Davis reminded everyone the school committee to register for the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) conference before the deadline. Student Activity Accounts for Holbrook Middle-High School and John F. Kennedy Elementary School Mr. Flanagan, Ms. Alterio and Ms. Davis would like any leftover balances not used within the 90 days after the class graduates to go into a general fund with the goal that the money be used in a way that would honor what it was the class raised the money for. 5 Ms. Harer would like the unclaimed money be passed to the next graduating class if not used within the 90 days after the class graduates. The majority agreed on the first option so that is how it will go into the second draft of the Student Activity Accounts policy. Mr. Flanagan made a motion to update the Student Activities Accounts policies to reflect the recommendation of the Business Manager and have all unclaimed Student Activity balances be put into a general fund with the goal that the money be used in a way that would honor what it was the graduating class that raised the money for.
