3 TERMS TO KNOW Standard Units of Credit = Classes Verified Credits = SOL Tests + Class

4 VERIFIED CREDITS A verified unit of credit is awarded for a course in which the student earns a standard unit of credit and achieves a passing score on a corresponding End-of-Course SOL test or a substitute assessment.

6 ELECTIVES Additional courses beyond the required courses that are needed to meet the total minimum standard unit of credit for graduation. Chosen normally by career and/or college interest or to discover more about a particular subject.

8 HOW MANY VERIFIED CREDITS (SOLs) DO I NEED FOR THE STANDARD DIPLOMA? You will need to earn 6 verified credits which must be earned in the following areas: 1 Math 1 Science 1 Social Studies 2 English (Eng. 11 Reading and Writing) 1 additional verified credit of the student s choosing

10 THE ADVANCED STUDIES ADVANTAGE Many colleges and universities require at minimum 4 credits per core area Increased preparation for the SATs and ACTs Eligibility to begin college courses at most Community Colleges- Placement Testing into Math and English Example: No Algebra 2?...must have Algebra 2 knowledge to place into college math! 11 GRADE LEVEL REQUIREMENTS You will receive a copy of your transcript when you meet with your counselor. Check your grade level on transcript. 9th Grade 10th Grade 11th Grade 12th Grade Successful completion of Grade 8 5 credits, 3 of which must be in required courses 11 credits, 6 of which must be in required courses 16 credits, 9 of which must be in required courses

12 SCHEDULING TIMELINE: Materials distributed to student today!!! January 2-29 Teachers will be inputting course recommendations for students. Students speak with teachers regarding placement. January 25 Curriculum Information Fair/Open House 6pm to 8pm. Come get information regarding course offerings by academic department January 30 February 5 Students/Parents input course selections in Parent Portal. At this time both students and parents will be able to review teacher recommendations that have been previously entered in Parent Portal. If you do not have access to Parent Portal, please see your school counselor. February 7 March 6 Students meet individually with school counselors during scheduled time through English classes to review, discuss, and select course requests and discuss academic progress. Early April Students will receive a copy of course requests in the mail to review with parents and make changes if necessary. THE FINAL DAY TO MAKE CHANGES TO COURSE REQUESTS IS

14 HOW DO I ACCESS PARENT PORTAL? Parent Portal may be accessed via the Osbourn Park Home Page using the link below This process cannot be completed using your parent s login information ***You must use your student login information to access the portal during this process***

15 STUDENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR ENTERING COURSE REQUESTS Log in using the user ID and password provided you by [ ]. If a dialog box appears, read the instructions in it and then click the Close button.

APPROPROATE BALANCE Consider your individual commitments, abilities and interests Don t unfairly compare yourself to peers- select courses that work best for YOU Make adjustments as needed- students can be recommended for all AP and higher level however this is not best for all students Better to excel in areas of strength than to overwhelm yourself with a plate that is too full

24 THE VIRTUAL VIRGINIA OPTION. Virtual Virginia - Online program through The Virginia Department of Education. Does offer some Advanced Placement level courses in a non-traditional setting. Select carefully - Virtual Virginia courses are as rigorous, if not more than an AP course taken in school.

26 RISING SENIORS JUMP START OPPORTUNITY Jump start allows Seniors to take US/VA Government or English 12 online during the summer before Senior Year though Virtual HS (6 week session) at no charge to the student May work from any location with Internet access Highly qualified teachers facilitate online instruction Students agree to take a maximum of 6 courses at base school during the school year An application for Jump Start will be available soon within the School Counseling office In the event that a student fails to complete the course or earns a failing grade the student is responsible for paying for the course themselves through Virtual High School or Night School. The student will not be able to repeat the course through Osbourn Park.

27 WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE? Seniors looking for flexibility to pursue a job, internship, and or dual enrollment/college courses Seniors with transportation Seniors who are independent learners and are motivated to complete their class work

28 EARLY RELEASE CRITERIA Must be a Senior Must choose 7 courses Consult Regulation Link Must meet regulation requirements, for example working to save money for college or working to help support the family If Employment is your reason for early release, you must show proof of employment Must be on track for graduation Please see your counselor for early release form Colleges prefer a full schedule Application required

31 KEEP IN MIND Scheduling is a commitment on your part. It is your responsibility to make informed decisions with the help of your parents, teachers and counselors. The last day to make changes to your course request is June 1st. No changes will be made after this date.

32 ALSO KEEP IN MIND. Course requests are requests and not all elective courses can be honored. Therefore, it is your responsibility to select alternative electives in order of preference with the intent to take if your first choice is not available. If alternative electives are not chosen, the counselor has the right to choose for the student based on course availability.
