1 2019 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME MISSION STATEMENT To recognize those individuals who have brought prestige and pride to the Shaler Area School District athletic program and to our community either as a player, coach, administrator, or supporter. TIME LINE Nomination forms will be placed on the SASD Website, in the school newsletters, sports programs, and in the newspaper. A press release will be sent to the local newspapers. January 1 - April 26, Nominations will be open for Hall of Fame Inductees. The Nomination Committee will meet to determine which candidates satisfy the criteria for the Hall of Fame. May 10, Nominations are closed. May/June The Selection Committee meets to review and discuss the nominees and select the class of September/October Hall of Fame Inductees will be honored at the beginning of a Shaler Area football game. A Hall of Fame dinner will be held and plaques will be presented. Page 1
2 SELECTION CRITERIA A. Shaler Area School District Induction Criteria 1. Athlete/Team A Shaler Area School District graduate who has been graduated for at least a period of five years, and achieved recognition at a national, state, or district, collegiate, or professional level, or has won a championship at the national, state, district, collegiate, or professional level, or has been a dominant athlete during his/her period of competition. Any interscholastic team that has been graduated for at least a period of five years and has won a WPIAL, WPIHL, or PIAA state championship will be eligible for induction. 2. Coach/Administrator/Teacher A former Coach/Administrator/Teacher who contributed immeasurably to the Shaler Area School District athletic program, or to interscholastic, intercollegiate, or professional athletic programs outside of the SASD. The Coach/ Administrator/Teacher must have served in his/her capacity for a period of at least five years. The nominee does not have to be a Shaler Area School District graduate. 3. Community Contributor (Supporter) An individual who contributed immeasurably to the Shaler Area School District athletic program. The nominee does not have to be a Shaler Area School District graduate. B. Old-Timer's Selection Criteria 1. Athlete/Team Any athlete who has attended Etna, Millvale, or Shaler High Schools and achieved recognition at a national, state, or district level, collegiate, or professional level, or has won a championship at the national, state, or district level, collegiate, or professional level or has been a dominant athlete during his/her period of competition. Any interscholastic team from Etna, Millvale, or Shaler High Schools that has won a WPIAL, WPIHL, or PIAA state championship will be eligible for induction. 2. Coach/Administrator/Teacher A former Coach/Administrator/Teacher who contributed immeasurably to the athletic program at Etna, Millvale, or Shaler High Schools, or to interscholastic, intercollegiate, or professional athletic programs outside of the SASD. The Coach/Administrator/Teacher must have served in his/her capacity for a period of at least five years. The nominee does not have to be an Etna, Millvale, or Shaler High School graduate. Page 2
3 NOMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS A Selection Committee will review all nomination forms to ensure that all nominees meet the selection criteria listed. The Selection Committee comprises teachers, administrators, coaches, athletic director, one student representative, and members of the community appointed by the Hall of Fame Committee. The Selection Committee will consider all eligible nominees for selection and induction into the Shaler Area School District Hall of Fame. The committee will have the responsibility of determining the number of inductees. The size of the selection committee shall be members. Openings for the selection committee will be screened by the current committee. The selection committee will be chaired by a person appointed by the Hall of Fame Committee. The chairperson unilaterally picks a junior student representative each year. This student is selected based on his/her athletic accomplishments, leadership abilities, academic accomplishments, and citizenship contributions to school/community. The Nomination Forms are included at the end of this packet (see attached). ELIGIBLE TEAMS To be considered eligible, teams must meet the following criteria: (1) have a governing body, (2) be a member of a sanctioned league (WPIAL) or in the case of hockey (WPIHL), (3) receive school district funds in a sanctioned league, or be under the direct supervision of the Athletic Director, including participation eligibility.
