4 YOU ARE ALMOST A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT! Start your path to high school now Homework is important! A main reason students fail classes in high school is because they don t do their homework or they don t complete on time. Get Involved! Students who are involved in extracurricular activities do better in school! The week before school starts, there will be an Orientation Day with Link Crew members excited to introduce you to the high school and begin your CARDINAL PRIDE!!

11 IMPORTANT TERMS & VOCABULARY Graduation Requirements Courses and credits that must be completed in order to graduate. Need to make up if not passed. Electives Courses that students can choose to take based on their interests and needs Prerequisites Courses that must be successfully completed before taking another course Credit.5 credit is earned for each trimester class passed with a grade of D- or better 27 credits required for graduation

13 IMPORTANT TERMS & VOCABULARY (continued) GPA (Grade Point Average) Each letter grade on your transcript has a point value and the point values are averaged each trimester Cumulative GPA is an average of all of grades from the beginning of 9th grade forward (colleges, school athletics & activities, scholarships, insurances companies look at) Weighted GPA for Honors courses Class Rank Standing in the class based on cumulative GPA as compared to classmates

17 HONORS & AP COURSES What to Consider (read more on back side of blue courses sheet) Honors and AP courses parallel the curriculum offered in the corresponding non-honors required class but they provide more rigor, challenge, & the opportunity to expand critical thinking skills. Increased amount of homework and reading outside of class. Consider personal, family & extracurricular commitments. AP courses have an end of the year exam which can earn college credit & help with college admissions.

18 HONORS & AP COURSES What to Consider Successful students in Honors/AP courses: Have a GPA of 3.2 or above Previously taken Honors courses Earned A s or B s in previous coursework in that area If you choose Honors Physical Science 9, you must have strong math skills. Registration for Honors/AP courses is final. You may not drop honors classes.

25 The Road to College: Rigor, Readiness, and Retention

26 AVID Students... Take challenging classes & get ready for college! In 9th grade AVID is paired with Honors English. You are given support in your AVID Honors courses. Learn study and organization techniques for high school & college success. Learn about careers & college choices. Visit colleges every year during high school. Learn how to apply for college and how to get scholarships to pay for college. Build a strong group of friends who are college-bound. If you are interested in AVID, you can pick up an application from your counselor.

27 WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING CLASSES CHOOSE CAREFULLY! Make good decisions about your classes it is difficult to make changes. Choose classes that are right for you.not what your friends are taking. Talk with your teachers & parents about selecting classes that are best for you. Students with case managers or ELL teachers should visit with them about appropriate class choices. Honors courses selections are final.

29 HOW TO COMPLETE BLUE REGISTRATION WORKSHEET? Fill out form completely & NEATLY. Recommend filling out with pencil in case you need to edit. Print your last name, first name & phone number. Have a parent sign that you have reviewed with them. You will need to select 15 total courses and 5 alternates. Select your required courses by placing an X in front of the courses. (note courses are already listed). 7. Select your electives and write the course number and name in the boxes provided. Also place an X in front of it! 8. Select your alternates. 9. Count up to make sure you have 15 courses.

33 HOW TO REGISTER ONLINE Log into your AH-Connect account to enter in your course requests Directions are in your registration folder on green half sheet You are required to register online AND to turn in completed blue registration worksheet. Don t wait until the last minute to register online!

34 When you log into AH Connect and StudentVue there is now a choice called Course Request under the Navigation tab just below course history. To start entering your choices, click on the gray bar titled Click here to change course requests located in the blue Selected Course Requests area under the welcome message. Tex t

35 Enter the course number ONLY and click Search Courses Do NOT enter Department information When the course number appears, click the Request button and then Click here to move selected requests to Selected Course Requests

36 This will start your list of course requests. Repeat this process until you have your 15 regular course requests. You will then enter your 5 ALTERNATE requests by clicking on the Alternate button and moving them to your alternate requests. Please note: You may enter a course number that notes that states a prerequisite is not met. Make sure you read course book to make sure you will meet prerequisites.
