3 Introduction This report contains the average composite, English, mathematics, reading, and science American College Test (ACT) scores at both the district and school levels. The averages were computed by using the ACT scores most recently obtained by the students who were or would have been members of the Louisiana 2005 graduating class. Scores are reported for public schools only, including the laboratory schools, East Baton Rouge Arts and Technology, the Louisiana for Mathematics, Science and the Arts (Natchitoches Parish), and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. The state and national average scores, however, were computed using the scores of both public and nonpublic school students. The national average composite score includes the 49 other states and the District of Columbia. The first table provides the district, state, and national average composite scores for 2001 through The remaining tables provide the 2005 school-level scores. Summary of ACT Results The average composite score for Louisiana public and nonpublic students remained at 19.8 in The score increased to 19.8 in 2004 after remaining at 19.6 for the previous five years. The average national ACT composite score remained at compared to the prior year. The average score for the nation increased to in 2004 after remaining at 20.8 for the previous two years. For 2005, Louisiana remains only 1.1 points below the nation, as compared to 1.2 points in 2002 and Louisiana s public and nonpublic students combined showed that average scores remained the same in all areas except for reading. English scores remained at in 2005 compared to Mathematics scores for Louisiana students also remained at 19.2 compared to the previous year. Reading scores decreased slightly from in 2004 to 19.8 in Science scores for Louisiana students remained at 19.7 in 2005 compared to Twenty-six of Louisiana s 68 public school districts had increased average composite scores from Winn Parish showed the biggest gain of any public school district, increasing from 18.3 in 2004 to 19.5 in 2005, a 1.2-point jump. Thirty-five districts had decreased average composite scores from 2004, and seven districts maintained the same average composite score. Louisiana was one of the twelve states with a high proportion (greater than 75%) of high school graduates taking the ACT, including Colorado (100 percent), Illinois (100 percent), Mississippi (94 percent), Tennessee (92 percent), Louisiana (85 percent), North Dakota (82 percent), Alabama (77 percent), Arkansas (76 percent), Kansas (76 percent), Kentucky (76 percent), Nebraska (76 percent), and South Dakota (76 percent). The percent of Louisiana graduates taking the ACT decreased two-percentage points, from 87 percent in 2004 to 85 percent in Nationally, 40 percent of graduates took the ACT. In a ranking of average ACT composite scores for the sixteen Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) states, Louisiana s average was ranked fourteenth, above the averages of South Carolina (19.4) and Mississippi (18.7). Louisiana s average falls just below Georgia s average of Proportionally, there were more students from poor families taking the test in Louisiana than nationally. In Louisiana, 15 percent of the participants were from families with a family income of less than $18,000, compared with 8 percent nationally. The ethnic group composition of the Louisiana population of ACT testers was different from that of the nation. While the national population consisted of 74 percent Caucasian-American/White students, 13 percent African-American/Black students, and a small percentage in each of the other ethnic groups, the Louisiana population contained fewer Caucasian-American/White students (60%), more African-American/Black students (30%), and very few students from other ethnic groups. i
