Westcoat Assistant Principal Parent Newsletter January 30, 2015 Dear HMS Community, This week we held our Annual State of the School Address with students and teachers of all three of our grade levels. The assemblies serve as a mid- year check- in with students as we begin the third quarter of the school year. I spoke to students about where we are as a school, and where we want to be moving forward. Topics included some insight into the management of our school, and the school improvement process. Also, we discussed the importance of positive school climate, and having a culture where students and teachers support each other. I explained some school- wide academic accountability data to our students as well. Most importantly, we recognized many students and teachers that have gone above and beyond to make our school a great place to learn. Furthermore, the presentation focused on good decision- making, and characteristics that we believe are important for middle school students to value. I would like to thank the many teachers that participated in our presentations. I would also like once again to thank my student presenters that helped me to prepare the presentation, including Aditi Patel, Adam Horowitz, Christopher Lane, Evan Pacheco, Megan Loiselle, Morgan Viccione, and Cedrick Gustave. I have enjoyed the time that I spent with these students over the past couple of weeks, and feel that they did a great job contributing to our Annual State of the School Address. I appreciate how well behaved and attentive all students were during the presentations, and most of all enjoyed the feedback and input that we received from members of our student body. Last weekend, we held our first ever HMS Basketball Tournament. Our boys and girls teams competed in the tournament, with both teams picking up one victory. The winner of the tournament for the boys division was Warwick, RI, while the winner for the girls division was Beckwith Middle School of Rehoboth. Congratulations to all student athletes that competed in the tournament. We hope that this will become a tradition at our school that will last for years to come. I would also like to thank all of the HMS teachers that volunteered their time over the weekend to help out in any way. A special thank you goes out to Coach Paul Botelho and Coach Tom Holden for organizing the tournament and spending the entire weekend at the school to ensure that it ran successfully. The dance scheduled for this evening, January 30 th, has been cancelled. Given the weather forecast and the amount of snow that we have received as of late, we figured that it would be much safer for all involved if we did not hold the dance this evening. These count positively for your grade. 1 Penny is 1 Point All other coins/bills should be put in OTHER grade s containers. These take away points from those grades. Dollars are a negative 100 points Quarters are a negative 25 points Dimes are a negative 10 points Nickels are a negative 5 points The GRADE with the most points at the end of the week will receive a reward. Penny Wars starts Monday February 2 nd and will run for 1 week. Ready, Set. WAR!

3 Tri County Regional Vocational High School: All students who are interested in applying to Tri County, please submit your application to Mrs. Lehane by February 4 th. On February 5 th Mrs. Lehane will be meeting with all prospective applicants and preparing them for the entrance interviews that will be held at HMS. On Friday, February 13 th, Tri County Admission/Guidance Staff will be here at HMS to interview all prospective applicants. All students who are applying will have to be interviewed. Along with their parents, students will be honored at a breakfast on Friday, February 6th.
