3 Welcome to the 2009 IAAA Athletic Administrator of the Year and Hall of Fame Banquet. Each year the IAAA Board has attempted to make this event as meaningful as possible. This year we will be inducting two members to the IAAA Hall of Fame. It is with great excitement that we are able to include the Hall of Fame inductees in our annual banquet. The recipients will have a plaque hung in a place of honor at the IHSAA offices in Boise. organization continuing to grow and getting more and more of us involved. Keep up the good work! We realize that there is always room for improvements. We are asking that you please give the board feedback as to what improvements you, the membership, would like to see for tonight s program. This year we once again had a wonderful response to the request for nominations for Athletic Administrator of the Year. We also had a large response in the voting process for these awards. It is heart warming to see our We hope that you enjoy the evening and the program. Many people have spent a lot of their extra time putting tonight together and we would like to acknowledge their efforts and thank them.

5 Pat Berg Junior High/Middle School Athletic Administrator of the Year Berg began his career in Granville, North Dakota and Beulah and Hazen, North Dakota where he was a head baseball and boy s basketball coach. He also did some assistant coaching in boy s basketball and football while he was in North Dakota. Eight years ago, he moved to the Nampa School District where he has coached baseball, softball and basketball. He was the Athletic Administrator for three years at West Middle School and moved this year to Lone Star Middle School when that school opened its doors. Pat has been married to his wife Val, who is the principal at Mill Creek Elementary in Middleton, for nine years. He credits Val as having a very strong influence in his life as an athletic administrator. Together they have two children. Amiah is 6 years old and Cooper is 14 months old. They also have a 10-year-old Vizsla named Jerzey. Berg enjoys spending time outdoors with his family as well as fly fishing and hunting. His great escape from the everyday routine is running.

6 Kevin Cato 1A Athletic Administrator of the Year Cato has been in education for 15 years. He taught at the Snake River Juvenile Detention Center for three years, followed by a year at Twin Falls High School, Buhl High School for three years and has been teaching and coaching at Hagerman High School the past eight years. During this time he has also been very involved in coaching. He has coached basketball for a total of 17 years at Hagerman High School, Twin Falls High School, Buhl High School, Murtaugh High School and Boise High. He has coached football for 11 years at Hagerman, Twin Falls and Buhl. Cato has also coached softball for three years at Buhl High School and one year of junior high track at Hagerman. Kevin is in his ninth year of Athletic Administration, all of them at Hagerman High School. Kevin and his wife, Kim, have a daughter, Jillian, who is 5 years old and a son, Tyson, who is almost 2 years old.

7 Jay Darrington 2A Athletic Administrator of the Year Upon graduating from Declo High School and Utah State University, Darrington began his 38 years in education as a teacher, coach and Athletic Administrator. Jay started his teaching and coaching career at Raft River High School where he coached football and wrestling for four years. He has spent the last 34 years at Declo High School where he coached football and wrestling for 15 years and girl s track for eight years. In 1990, he took over the Athletic Director s duties and has been the Hornet s A.D. for the past 18 years. Jay retired from teaching three years ago, remaining in the Athletic Director s position on a part-time basis. As he says, however the pay is only part-time since we all know our job is far from parttime. Currently he is the Past- President of the Idaho Athletic Administrator s Association after serving as its President for four years. He is also the Athletic Administrator s representative on the I.H.S.A.A. Board of Directors. Jay has been the tournament director for many state tournaments as well as helping with both girl s and boy s state basketball tournaments. He is a fixture at the state wrestling tournament and the state track meet where he has been very involved for many years. Darrington is also the Mayor of Declo and is active in his church, which makes his life very busy, but good. He is thankful for the opportunities that his job has given him to make acquaintances throughout the state and the close friends he has made with so many A.D.s in Idaho. He is honored for having received this award and wants to thank the IAAA and the many Athletic Directors from around the state.

8 Tim Cronnelly 3A Athletic Administrator of the Year Cronnelly received his high school education at Central Catholic High School in Butte, Montana. He received his B.S. degree from Montana State University in Secondary Education and got his Master s degree from Boise State University in Economic Education. He began his teaching and coaching career in Baker, Montana at Baker High School where he taught social studies and coached basketball and track. From there he began his career in Idaho by teaching and coaching for eight years at Horseshoe Bend High School. During his time there he taught social studies and English while being the head track, football and girls basketball coach and an assistant coach in football and boy s basketball. From Horseshoe Bend, Cronnelly moved to Cascade High School to again teach social studies and English for five years. He also was the head girls track coach and assistant coach of the football and J.V. girls basketball teams. From Cascade, Tim made the journey north to Timberlake High School where he has been the past six years. During his time in Timberlake he again is teaching social studies. He has been an assistant football coach and has been the Athletic Director for the past five years. Tim and his wife Julie have two sons, Brian who is a freshman at Timberlake High School, and Rob who is in the seventh grade at Timberlake Junior High. They also have a daughter, Colleen, who is in the fifth grade at Spirit Lake Elementary school.

9 Terry Mooney 3A Athletic Administrator of the Year Mooney began teaching and coaching in the fall of He has spent all of his 37 years in education in the Weiser School District. He has taught in every school in Weiser from elementary P.E. to high school U.S. History. He was the head baseball coach in Weiser for 19 years and was an assistant football coach for 20 years. Terry has been an Athletic Administrator for 18 years. He retired from teaching in 2006, however remains as the part-time Athletic Director for Weiser High School. Terry and Lori, his wife of 28 years, have three children. Their twin boys are Brooks and Kevin. Their daughter Meghan (Mooney) Tschida is married to their son-in-law Grant Tschida. Meghan and Grant have a daughter Emily.

10 Ty Jones 4A Athletic Administrator of the Year Jones marks his 20th year in education and his sixth year in Athletic Administration. Ty began his career at O Leary Junior High in Twin Falls as an eighth grade basketball and nineth grade cross country coach. From there he went to American Falls where he coached J.V. basketball, J.V. football and eighth grade football for two years. His next move was to Minico High School where he coached J.V. football and J.V. basketball for a year. Following his brief stay at Minico, Jones spent six years at Gooding High School. While at Gooding, he was the head basketball coach for six years and head football coach for two years. He also coached middle school golf for two years and middle school track for one year. It was while he was at Gooding that he began his career in Athletic Administration. He was the Athletic Administrator the last two years at Gooding. He is now in his fourth year at Jerome High School, where he is the Athletic Administrator and Assistant Principal. Currently, Jones is in his second year as the Representative for coaches of boy s sports on the IHSAA Board of Directors. He has been very involved in helping with the State Wrestling and State Track events that are sponsored by the I.H.S.A.A. Ty has been married to his awesome wife Cindy for 17 years. Together they have three children: Keegan who is 14, Justin who is 11 and Sophia who is 4.

11 Todd Gilkey 5A Athletic Administrator of the Year Gilkey is in his 17th year as an Idaho educator. He started his career at St. Maries High School where he was the head girls basketball coach for three years, and the head softball coach for three years. He was also an assistant volleyball coach for nine years, assistant girls basketball coach for two years, assistant football coach for a year and an assistant boys basketball coach for a year. The last eight years that he spent at St. Maries, he was the Athletic Administrator. Currently, Gilkey is in his second year at Coeur d Alene High School where he is an Athletic Administrator and Assistant Principal. Todd has served for many years on the IAAA Board of Directors and is currently serving in his first year as the President of the IAAA. He has been married to his wife KayDee for six years. They have a son, Eli, who is 4 years old.

12 Jay Darrington IAAA Hall of Fame Inductee Class of 2009 There is probably no more familiar face in all of Idaho High School Athletics than that of Jay Darrington. That face is even more familiar in his hometown of Declo. A 1963 graduate of Declo High School, Jay returned to his alma mater in 1974 and has been there since. After receiving his degree in accounting from Utah State University in 1967, Jay worked for a time for the Idaho State Tax Commission but his love of coaching and teaching soon led him back to high school. Upon completing his teaching certification Jay spent four years teaching and coaching at Raft River High School. The last 34 years have been back home in Declo. Jay s dedication to his profession, first as teacher and a coach and eventually as an administrator, is unsurpassed. He has served his profession coaching football, wrestling, and track for many years and since becoming the Declo Athletic Director in 1990 he has been a constant influence on athletic activities statewide. Even since his supposed retirement four years ago Jay has remained the A.D. at Declo representing his school in various tournaments and championships throughout the state. His service to his fellow Athletic Directors is legendary. An active member in IAAA, Jay is currently serving as the IAAA Treasurer and Past-President after completing four years as our association President. He is also our representation to the IHSAA Board of Control and has been involved nationally with the NIAAA as well. In his spare time he even has found room to serve for 16 years as the Mayor of Declo, and he still gets a little Dutch Oven cooking and golfing in. That smile on his face comes from his passion for what he does. I still live and enjoy my work every day and am very thankful for the opportunity to associate with the many young people it is my privilege to know and work with, he says.

13 Mike Jorgensen IAAA Hall of Fame Inductee Class of 2009 Mike Jorgensen fits the definition of hometown boy gaining hometown success. Born and raised in Idaho Falls, the 1965 graduate of Bonneville High School was back from college and ready to teach by With a major degree in mathematics and a minor in physical education from Utah State University Mike was a prime candidate for a teaching/coaching profession. After ten years as the head track coach followed by ten years as the head boys basketball coach at Bonneville, Jorgensen made the move to District Athletic Director for Bonneville and Hillcrest High Schools in He prepared himself for the position with his Masters degree in Athletic Administration completed at Idaho State University in Mike has attained his Certified Athletic Administrator designation as well. During his 14 years as the District A.D., Mike also became prominent in the profession on the state and national levels. He managed over a dozen different state tournaments or championships, served on numerous community boards, and was an IHSAA board member Mike gave six years of leadership to the IAAA including serving as State President He served nationally on the NIAAA Strategic Planning Committee, as a certified instructor to the NFHS/ASEP Coaching Education Program, and as a delegate to the NIAAA National Assembly. Though retired as an active A.D. since 2004, he remains involved as an assistant coach and professional volunteer. The IAAA Hall of Fame honor simply mirrors others already received: NCSSAD State Athletic Director of the Year, IAAA State Athletic Director of the Year, NIAAA State Award of Merit winner, 2003 NIAAA National Distinguished Service Award winner, and NFHS Citation Award winner in Mike and his wife Sherie have been married nearly 45 years. They have raised three children, Michell, Todd, and Yvette and now are enjoying time with six grandchildren.
