You must be ready to schedule in the computer lab on this date! Be sure: Parent signs Current teacher signs/initials where required ( math, world language, and advanced and AP classes). Be sure you sign up for the required credits you need to take!

6 Course Descriptions Course descriptions are available on-line at OR If you do not have online access at home, you can use a Career Center computer or check out a paper copy of the course descriptions. It is your responsibility to know what you are signing up for! Your class choices are a commitment; choose wisely. Check for prerequisites. Talk to teachers.

10 How many credits do I sign up for? 6 credits: 1 study hall each semester. 6.5 credits: 1 study hall either semester. 7 credits: no study halls. *GBAPS states that a student must carry at least 6 credits a year.

11 Why include study hall(s) in your schedule? Can get help from teachers or resources/labs if needed. Still plenty of time to earn credits to graduate. More time for after-school activities. Busy people schedule time to get things done. Less stress! Good practice for what s to come.

13 Should I Retake a Course? If you earned a D or F in a class, courses can be retaken. New grade will replace old one if higher. NOTE: You cannot earn credit for the same course twice (exception is math).

14 What are colleges looking for? Subject 4 Eng. Lang Arts 3/4 Mathematics 3/4 Science (lab) 3/4 Social Studies 4 College Prep Electives Foreign/World Language, fine arts, computer science and other academic areas What do they look for: Rigor Co-Curricular involvement Leadership Quality more than quantity Community Service Requirements vary. You MUST check with the college of your choice. These requirements are for the minimum that a college will accept, most colleges want you to have more than the minimum.

Can earn credit for college Advanced Placement courses (AP exam-optional) Rigorous curriculum/stimulating material Preparation for college Teacher recommendation (should have excellent grade in the subject) Commitment to complete the course Summer work will be required for Advanced classes Note: The ideal Advanced and AP candidate is very motivated (A s and B s) and understands there will be considerable reading and writing homework.

17 Traveling to Other High Schools? Students may sign up for classes that are offered at other schools such as Acting or Sign Language. Transportation is your responsibility. Must complete a shared student form. Travel during a study hall and/or lunch. No guarantees the class will fit into your schedule.

20 English Language Arts - 4 Credits All students are required to take: -English Language Arts 10 OR -Advanced English Language Arts 10 next year. Advanced English Language Arts 10 require a teacher initials on course selection sheet and require summer work.

21 Social Studies - 3 Credits From your current Social Studies 9 th class, you can: Social Studies 10 _ AP Recommended (10 th ) AP Recommended ( 10 th ) Social Studies 11 AP World History AP US History (if taken 10 th grade and proceed to) (preferred option) AP World History (recommended in or or AP US History Social Studies th grade) Talk to your social studies teacher for their recommendation.

22 MATH 3 Credits Speak to current math teacher about his/her recommendation for your 10 th grade math class. Taking Algebra I in Grade 8 counts for 1 elective credit, not math. Gr. 8 Geometry does count for HS math credit. Most colleges want to see 4 years of high school math, even though only 3 are required for graduation from high school

Chemistry are highly recommended. If students took Biology in Gr.

23 SCIENCE 2 Credits Only need Physical Science and Biology for graduation from high school, BUT colleges want to see at least 3 to 4 years of lab science, so Chemistry or Conceptual Chemistry are highly recommended. If students took Biology in Gr. 9, MUST take: -Chemistry or Conceptual Chemistry in Gr. 10 and -Physics or AP Physics or Physical Science in Gr. 11

24 Personal and Financial Literacy (PFL) credit (taken in grade 11 th or 12 th ) If students opt to test out of this class, the test out must be taken in sophomore or junior year. The test-out option is only offered November of each year. Students must score 70% or better to earn a P and not have to take the class. Credit is not given. Students can try testing out more than once.

25 World Language Do I need it? Some schools require 2 years consecutively of the same language. If a college does not require another language, it may be required in college depending on your study/major. Technical colleges do not require a foreign language. Note: Being proficient in another language may be very useful in any career.

26 Physical Education credits over 3 years Students MUST take Personal Fitness before Strength Training. If students take a year of PE, the 2 nd class will count for elective credit (unless making up a failed class). Students can take the same class over twice (except PE 9). PE classes can be taken for Pass/Fail instead of a letter grade (will not be calculated into GPA); The Pass/Fail option must be chosen before the school starts. Be sure to list alternative choices! If interested in Summer PE, indicate it on your course registration sheet, and your alternative choice (study hall or an elective class).

27 When will Summer School be available? Course information and registration materials will arrive in late March or early April. Listen for announcements. Some courses fill QUICKLY! Early registration is encouraged and should be submitted by the deadline.

28 What are the new classes and changes next year? MS Word Expert or MS Excel/Access no longer being offered, replaced by: Advanced Office/Advanced Office/CEP (can take this course even if you ve taken MS Word or MS Excel/Access in the past and as a CEP course). New Class: Mobile App Development and Design

29 Focus Question: Why choose alternative classes and check for required prerequisites? ALTERNATIVE CLASS CHOICES - Please include, in order of preference, the classes you would be willing to take if one does not run or fit into your schedule. You will enter these into Infinite Campus while in the computer lab. If there are not enough students enrolled for a class, the class may not be offered. - Check for prerequisites. You need to have passed the prerequisite course with a D or better before you can sign up for the advanced course - PARENT/GUARDIAN SIGNATURE We need to know your parents approve of your choices.

30 Students with IEPs IEP teachers will select the core classes and sign the course registration sheet. Students will need to decide which electives to enroll in.
