4 Informed Decision Making Step 1: 8 th Grade teachers will utilize scheduling information to properly guide students through the scheduling process to assist them in making informed decisions regarding and completion of Contract for Requesting Courses Their schedules for next school year Their high school careers Plans beyond high school

8 Precollege Curriculum 2 credits of the same World Language Other Graduation Requirements for ALL students: Kentucky Scholars DIPLOMA = Precollege curriculum + Physics Graduation with Honors Beginning with the class of 2018: Any student with a weighted graded of 3.8 or higher will be considered as graduating with *honors and will be recognized as graduating Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude *Details on next slide An exit interview is a requirement Attendance - Seniors NO more than 9 unexcused events to WALK at graduation An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) must be completed each year. An English and Math class must be taken each year All students must complete 20 hours of community service.

10 Prerequisites and Alternative Classes Some courses require certain prerequisites or an application (if a course is requested and the prerequisite is not met student will be removed from requested course) Example: FACS is only open to 9 th -10 th Minimum of 6 viable alternate classes are essential (the more ½ credits you request the more alternates you need) Choose wisely, schedule changes will not be made

11 Challenge Forms Review core classes carefully and decide with your child if you need to complete a challenge form. Due no later than 2/28/19 to middle school counselor **Schedule changes will not be made

19 Career Pathways Offer Opportunities Provides proof of a skill set for employment Each career pathway has Occupational Skill Set or Industry Certification recognized nationwide Students demonstrate 21 st Century skills while in high school Students are more marketable with an industry certification and can earn college credit. *There are several CTE course open to Freshman

22 Dual Enrollment Eligibility Requirements: GPA 3.0, ACT 20 Courses are offered 1 st period with NKU instructors, or with RCHS teachers or on college campus An UNLIMITED NUMBER of courses may be taken at $162.00/class (Scholarship MAY cover 2 courses for seniors and 1 course for juniors dependent on funding) The grade is indexed as AP Credit on high school transcript: A = 104, B = 93, C = 82 Every course taken will be calculated into GPA and class rank each semester Application necessary EACH SEMESTER check with the Guidance Office for details and deadlines

23 Early College Go to Gateway ½ day morning or afternoon for up to 4 classes, up to 12 college credit hours each semester Each class is $ (currently) plus cost of book Must have 3.0 GPA, 18 English, 22 Math, 20 Reading on ACT Must be a Junior or Senior Transportation is provided Could earn Associate s (2 year) degree before graduating high school

25 Firefighter/EMT Program Half-day, 2 year program Offered at Boone County Fire Training Center Requirements 2.5 GPA or higher 18 on ACT Must pass physical fitness test

26 Gatton Academy Special Programs Kentucky s top 60 exceptional young scientists and mathematicians can learn in an environment which offers advanced educational opportunities, preparing them for leadership roles in Kentucky. Students will finish their junior and senior years of high school living in Schneider Hall and taking courses offered by WKU. At the end of two years, they will be high school graduates and will have earned at least 60 college credit hours.

27 Special Programs Governor s Scholar Program The Governor s Scholars Program is a stimulating, five-week, residential summer program for outstanding Kentucky students completing their junior year in high school. Established in 1983, the program provides academic and personal growth through the balance of a strong liberal arts program with a full co-curricular and residential life experience. Students must complete an application and compete with others from across the state. Those selected attend the program free of charge.

29 Scheduling Check List for Students 1. Review Course Guide Book (online) descriptions, grade level, prerequisites. 2. Select courses that meet graduation requirements and align with your career choices. 3. Complete the course request sheets provided by your Middle School Total number of requested credits alternates. Be sure course numbers are accurate including hyphen & number after Pay attention to creating a balanced schedule (challenging but not impossible) 4. Parent/Student meet with JAM teacher for conference at Cooper High School on February 13 th or February 14 th. Bring completed Contract for Requesting Courses! Complete Challenge Form(s) if necessary. Remember --- No schedule changes permitted. Due to middle school counselor by 2/28/19.
