Core classes in the regular education program are Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) courses. State Requirements for Middle School Coursework: In addition to core classes each year, the state of Texas requires middle school students to take one year of fine arts (Art, Band, Choir, or Theater) and two years of Physical Education or its equivalent (Athletics, Dance, Pep squad, Cheerleading.) Students must list alternative elective choices on this worksheet in the event one of the first two elective choices is not available. 6th Grade Electives 0911 Art I 0960 Beginning Band 0970 Choir 0901 Theater Arts I 0927 Beginning Journalism 0939 Problem-Based Inquiry 0944 Computer Literacy 0900 Introduction to Spanish 0418 Spanish I Dual Language Pre-AP* (Demonstrated Spanish proficiency required/high school credit) 0928 Recreational Reading 0601/0603 Reading Intervention/Math Intervention** (Placement determined by STAAR test scores) *Spanish I Dual Language Pre-AP is a rigorous high school level course designed for dual-language students and native speakers of Spanish. A proficiency test is required for enrollment. Upon completion of this course, students will earn one high school credit. Students who do not meet the enrollment criteria for Spanish I and who would like Spanish instruction may sign up for Introduction to Spanish. **Students who do not meet the staff-designated STAAR standard for 5 th grade STAAR will be placed into an intervention class to provide needed academic support. This course will take the place of one elective. Students in ESL and dyslexia will be scheduled into the appropriate coursework in place of one elective. Students who need extra support in reading or math may be scheduled into a reading intervention class in place of one elective. PE course description: Students in this course will acquire the knowledge and skills for movement that provide the foundation for enjoyment and continued social development through physical activity. Students will learn specialized skills and concepts that lead to confidence and competency in a variety of physical activities. Physical activity will include lessons from team sports, individual sports, aerobic sports and adventure outdoor sports. Pre-Athletics course description: Pre-Athletics is designed for students who plan to try-out for sports teams in 7 th grade. Students choosing this course should expect a rigorous daily workout. Athletic seasons will be observed in Pre- Athletics. For example, girls in Pre-Athletics will work on volleyball skills during volleyball season and boys will work on football skills during football season.
