2 Art AS GCE in Art, Craft & Design (unendorsed) Students will be given the opportunity to generate practical work, ideas and research from primary and contextual sources. They will experiment with a range of media and processes in order to develop and refine their ideas for presenting a final personal outcome. Assessment type: 50% coursework 50% external assessment Entry requirement: B grade GCSE or Merit grade BTEC in Art or a design subject Course contact: zmoore@corbybusinessacademy.org Business and Economics A Level GCE Business Studies This booklet outlines the different course options in the Sixth Form from September Each section highlights the course outline, assessment type and entry requirements. Most students will be expected to study four subjects in Year 12 and three in Year 13, although some students may continue with all four. Once you have your GCSE results Sixth Form staff will have a detailed consultation with you about the courses you will study in Sixth Form in order to achieve your university place or employment. Business Studies A Level is an academic course which prepares students for the challenges of the 21st century by introducing them to the world of business. It emphasises the ever-changing character of business, the diverse nature of business enterprise and the interdependence of the various parts of the business world. Business Studies will help you understand how the world works, what businesses do, and how and why they do it. Assessment type: 30% coursework 70% external examination BTEC National Business BTEC National Business courses have been designed to be as practical as possible and allow you to get a good job with an employer or give you the skills to enable you to progress into further education. Over the duration of the course you will develop a wide range of business knowledge and transferable skills which will be applicable for both the workplace and further education. Assessment type: 100% coursework A Level Economics In GCE Economics you will look at the fundamental forces which affect our lives, such as employment, prices, international trade and poverty. Students will develop an interest and enthusiasm for economics and its contribution to the wider economic and social environment. Students will apply economic concepts and theories in a range of contexts and appreciate their value and limitations in explaining real world phenomena. Assessment type: External examinations Entry requirements: 5 GCSE A*-C grades including B grade GCSE Business Studies and GCSE grade B in Maths Dance BTEC Dance Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma The BTEC Diploma extends the specialist work students will have completed in the BTEC Level 2 course. There is potential for the qualification to prepare you for employment in the appropriate vocational sector and therefore it is suitable for those who wish to enter into a career in dance. Alternatively learners may continue on to degrees or other higher educational programmes. Assessment type: 100% coursework with practical assessments Entry requirement: 5 GCSE A*-C grades, Merit or above at Level 2 Dance Course contact: aharris@corbybusinessacademy.org Design and Technology AS GCE in Design & Technology Product Design This course allows students to develop a range of skills and outcomes at AS level, demonstrating their creativity in order to apply these to a design and make project. The specification seeks to develop students knowledge and understanding of, and skills and application in, designing products. They will also develop their research, analysis, product development, project planning and evaluation skills. 3 English and Media A Level English Literature The course comprises four modules: Aspects of Narrative; Dramatic Genre: Comedy; The Gothic, an approach to literary criticism and independent reading. Students explore a wide range of texts from Shakespeare to Auden, Mary Shelley to F Scott Fitzgerald while also having the opportunity to pursue their own literary interests in one of the coursework modules. Assessment type: Examination 60% coursework: 40% Entry requirement: Grade B in both English Language and English Literature Course contact: abeckwith@corbybusinessacademy.org A Level Media Students on the A Level Media Studies course have the opportunity to become involved in a wide variety of projects. In both the first and second years of the course, students are required to produce their own media product using professional packages. Media Studies also gives students the opportunity to question the way the media communicates with us and how it acts as a way to communicate with others. Students will investigate the role of effective communication within the Health and Social Care sector, as well as exploring the importance of health and safety and human development. Students will examine both human and physical geography. They will be required to assess the current situation, examine the threats we face and make recommendations about how this may need to be addressed in the future. Assessment type: 75% external examination 25% coursework Entry requirement: Minimum B Grade in GCSE History Course contact: sstacey@corbybusinessacademy.org ICT AS GCE Information and Communication Technology In the new OCR specification for A Level ICT the focus is now on the practical applications of ICT, which gives learners the skills they ll need to enter today s business world. Learners explore the latest technologies, through completely updated course content, including Bluetooth, broadband and global positioning systems. Assessment type: 40% coursework 60% external examination Entry requirement: 5 GCSEs including Maths, English and ICT Course contact: kzaman@corbybusinessacademy.org Languages A Level French The course enables students to develop the language skills they acquired at GCSE level and provides an insight into other cultures and societies. Four general topics are studied at AS level: media, popular culture, family relationships, and healthy lifestyle. At A2, there are two cultural topics, relating to a French speaking country, and three topics relating to the environment, multiculturalism and contemporary social issues. There is the opportunity to study the core units which contain trigonometry, co-ordinate geometry, vectors and calculus etc, a unit in statistics and a unit in decision maths. Homework is set every week and there is dedicated Session 4 support available. There is the opportunity to study pure units which introduce topics such as matrices and complex numbers, more statistics units and two mechanics units. Homework is set every week and there is dedicated Session 4 support available. Assessment type: External exam Entry requirement: 5 GCSE A*-C grades including GCSE Mathematics at grade A. 4 6 Music A Level Music The course demands performing, composing, listening and analytical skills in almost equal measure. You will improve your performing and composing in a range of styles. You will listen to a wide variety of music and develop a more informed appreciation of how and why it was written and/or performed. Assessment type: Composition 30% Performance 30% External exam 40% Entry requirement: A minimum of a B grade in GCSE music Course contact: cwears@corbybusinessacademy.org Public Services BTEC National Public Services Subsidiary Diploma This course includes practical opportunities to develop personal skills, as well as the theoretical knowledge and information about our Public Services. This will include learning about Government policies and the Public Services, outdoor and adventurous expeditions, developing team leadership, Public Service employment, and physical fitness for the public services. Students will attend a hiking expedition to Snowdonia as part of the course. It is the study of what people and animals do and why they do it. Psychologists do not simply explain people s behaviour but they use their understanding to help people overcome difficulties, and bring about changes for the better. By taking AS/A2 level Psychology you will be given a general introduction to psychological concepts, theories, research findings and their application to real life. It also encourages students to develop an understanding of scientific methods; be aware of advances in technology, including information technology, relevant to biology; recognise the value and responsible use of biology in society and sustain and develop their enjoyment of, and interest in, biology. The mole concept requires a good standard of mathematical competence to be able to quantify the amounts of chemicals used in reactions. The A2 course expands on these concepts and also includes transition metal elements. The A2 course expands on these concepts and also includes nuclear, particle and medical physics. Assessment type: 80% external examination 20% practical assessment Entry requirement: Double Science GCSE, both at grade B, or B in GCSE Physics, plus grade B in either GCSE Biology or Chemistry. The second section encourages the student to develop their knowledge and understanding of how competitive sport has developed over time. Assessment type: 50% theory exam 50% practical performance (two sports) and coursework Entry requirement: GCSE Physical Education at grade B or B grade in GCSE Double Science Course contact: aharris@corbybusinessacademy.org BTEC Sport Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma The BTEC National Award in Sport is a nationally-recognised Level 3 qualification which gives you the opportunity to enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector or to progress to higher education vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel BTEC Higher Nationals in Sport or related areas. This qualification has been developed in the sport and active leisure sector to provide education and training for sport, leisure and recreation employees. You might be surprised at the range of opportunities for employment within the industry, or for further study.
