1 It makes a big difference in your life when you stay positive. - Ellen DeGeneres Dear AHS Parents, Isn t that a great picture? I love this one because I find it to be a glimpse of what Anderson High School is going to look like when the renovation project reaches completion. For all the difficulties we ve experienced and hiccups along the way, things are definitely moving along and it is only going to get BETTER! I need to remind myself of this every day because it s the absolute truth! That said, we re definitely gearing up for another INTENSE summer filled with construction. In the same way the Science and Career wings were completely demolished and rebuilt, the English, Math, World Language, and Social Studies halls will look similar this summer - exposed, ugly, and barren. But over time, new walls will be erected, new windows installed, and the academic portion of the building will be filled with fresh paint, new lighting, and air conditioning, among other things. We have 13 school days remaining in the school year. There s work yet to be done, but I think all of us are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel! Have a GREAT weekend! 2 Probably one of the most EXCITING pictures came yesterday in some of the newly renovated areas of the building in which the A/C was operational for the first time!! 87 degrees outside, 69 degrees inside!!

3 Mrs. Henning s CP English 11 class was focused and reading on Monday. As she put it,...when you give them time to read, they READ!!

4 On Monday night, our PTO recognized a number of AMAZING educators at their end of the year celebration!! I walked around on Tuesday just snapping a few pictures of the MANY examples of students working hard and doing GREAT work!!

5 Miss Myers was SURPRISED when her students threw her a surprise bridal shower on Wednesday!!

6 On Thursday, we welcomed the US Army to AHS and they brought a trailer filled with activities designed to raise awareness of the harmful effects of impaired and distracted driving. It was a great opportunity for our students! The left is the new multipurpose facility. The right is the new elevator shaft. Soon, a bridge will be constructed connecting the two buildings. How COOL will this entrance be for our Fall Athletics Season!!

7 The north side of the new multipurpose facility is beginning to get insulated before the exterior covering begins. It s going to be AMAZING!! AP EXAM INFORMATION: Week 2 of AP Exams begin next week for all students registered to take them. Click Here for the Schedule of AP Tests. Students should report on time for school and report to class after their test(s) is/are dismissed. Please note that some tests will run past the end of the normal school day. Students and parents should make plans accordingly. Students should report early, as announced, for their AP test to their designated testing location to be seated and complete pre-administration information Water and snacks are permitted during testing breaks If an AP test is scheduled during a student's normal lunch period, they should attend a different lunch on that day- communicate this to any necessary teachers Students must bring sharpened number 2 pencils and a blue or black pen to each test Please view Anderson in the Know for specific information- i.e. calculator policies, testing day Do's and Don'ts, etc. ACT BLITZ INFORMATION: (for current Juniors only) Students interested in preparation for the ACT are welcome to sign up for this day-long event hosted at Anderson High School and facilitated by Torch Prep. We would love to include these special time capsules. Thank you very much! PROM & AFTER-PROM: Prom and After Prom are coming up fast (May 19th & 20th) and it takes an army to pull this off! MENTAL HEALTH MOMENT: One way we serve our students with mental health needs is with a full-time school-based therapist. Alison Price from Child Focus sees students here at school all day every day. If you're interested in school-based therapy for your child contact your child's counselor and he or she will generate a referral. COLLEGE ESSAY WRITING: (for current Juniors only) The Forest Hills Foundation for Education's college essay writing workshop is on Thursday, June 7th from 9am to 1pm at Nagel. Space is limited to 75 students and so far we have 25 students signed up. The cost for the 4 hour workshop is $20 and is open to all current juniors. 9 On August 1 and 2, students in grades 7-12 will join together with local teachers to solve business challenges during #InnovateCincy. Businesses will present a real, current challenge and #InnovateCincy participants will suggest feasible solutions through collaboration, research and ingenuity! In the past, several solutions proposed by students were implemented by sponsoring businesses! Join us for the fun.and also enhance your college application, develop real-world skills, and, most importantly, add your own unique perspective! Register and learn more at INFORMATION ABOUT GREAT OAKS SUMMER CAMP: Great Oaks is offering one-week summer camps for students who will enter the 9th or 10th grade in Fall, Forest Hills will provide transportation for these camps to students who register for the following sessions: June 4-8 at Diamond Oaks June 4-8 at Scarlet Oaks June at Live Oaks. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY FOR TEXTBOOKS: All textbooks are the property of the Forest Hills Board of Education. Textbooks are loaned to students for their use during the school year, and become the personal responsibility of each student. Students will be held accountable for textbooks and are required to return them at the end of the course. Fees will be assessed for loss or damage to textbooks. These range from rebind costs to book replacement charges. Replacement costs typically run between $50 to over $100. Students must return all textbooks to the Media Center between 7:10 am - 2:30 Monday- Friday until Thursday, May 31. Please do not leave books in the Media Center until they have been checked in. Your book will be scanned, your name will be verified, and you will place the book on the correct shelf in Textbook Room. Any books not returned to the Media Center by Thursday, May 31 will result in a fee. SUMMER SCHOOL REGISTRATION INFORMATION: Summer is right around the corner! 10 INFORMATION FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR: CALENDARS: o Find academic calendars for and online now! Parents may notice the calendar reverts back to an academic calendar similar to what FHSD followed prior to construction projects. For the past two years, FHSD academic calendars incorporated longer summers to provide additional time for construction, to prepare classrooms for students after construction, and to better ensure a smooth start to the school year. Construction is anticipated to be complete by summer 2019, so longer summers are no longer needed for construction purposes. In addition, all FHSD schools will now be air conditioned, which allows for a comfortable start date earlier in the summer. Finally, starting school in August is more consistent with the start dates of other area school districts, thus providing a more equal playing field for optimization of instructional time at the beginning of the year. NEW START TIMES: o During its regular April 23 public meeting, the Forest Hills Board of Education unanimously approved an administrative recommendation to change school start times to better support student learning and wellness. Learn more VACCINATIONS: o Incoming 7th and 12th graders are required to have documentation on file in the health office of having received the following vaccines: 7th grade: 1 Tdap AND 1 meningitis vaccine 12th grade: 2 meningitis vaccines (or 1 if the first one was received after their 16th birthday. o Please provide documentation from your physician's office or clinic to the school health office as soon as possible.
