Activities will be focused on strengthening academic foundations and refining advanced learning skills such as note taking and study habits. AP Boot Camp is free and strongly recommended for first-time AP students. Transportation will not be provided for the AP Boot Camp class. *Peer Tutor Boot Camp: July 15 - July 19 (5 days) Peer Tutor Boot Camp is designed to empower students with communication, leadership, and peer tutoring skills for the upcoming school year. Week long training will feature active team bonding, deep self-reflection, and educational strategies tutors can use to teach students at all grade levels and reinforce their own knowledge. Peer Tutor Boot Camp is free. All are welcome. Transportation will not be provided for the Peer Tutor Boot Camp class.
4 REGISTRATION Registration for Summer School will open on Monday, April 1, Register early! After the registration dates below, we will determine if there is sufficient enrollment to run each class and notify registrants of cancelled classes. DEADLINES Friday, April 26, 2019 Friday, May 24, 2019 Friday, June 7, 2019 Session 1 of Drivers Education Session 2 of Driver s Education Session 2 of Summer School Session 1 of Summer School Boot Camps - July Session REFUNDS AND COURSE CANCELLATIONS MHS reserves the right to cancel any class that does not meet minimum enrollment guidelines (at least 18 students). If a course is cancelled, a student will be given the opportunity to switch to another course with available openings or to receive a course fee refund. No refunds will be made unless the class is officially cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. TUITION The tuition fees for Summer School are as follows: In-district students: Out-of-district students: Driver s Ed/Behind the Wheel: $ per session $ per session $ (See Driver s Education FAQ s) Payment must be made at the time of registration. Only cash and credit cards will be accepted. Checks will be not accepted. Registration may be made online at or in person in the Guidance Office. ATTENDANCE Session 1 and Session 2 classes will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., Monday through Thursday, for 15 days. Driver s Education/Behind the Wheel classes will meet as described on the course FAQ page. The condensed Summer School curriculum requires prompt and regular student attendance. The attendance policy during the summer session is based on the intensive nature of the instruction. Students arriving up to one hour late to academic classes will have one hour of absence recorded. Seven (7) hours of absence or two (2) days of absence will result in a failing grade. OUT-OF-DISTRICT STUDENTS Any high school student may attend the Mundelein High School Summer School program. Students who do not attend Mundelein High School during the school year should confirm with their home school counselor that the course credit will be accepted. TRANSPORTATION Transportation will be provided for Summer School academic classes. Transportation will not be provided for Driver s Education or Boot Camps. To ensure transportation for Session 1, registration must be submitted by April 26th. For Session 2, registration must be submitted by May 24th.
5 Course Descriptions ENGLISH English 1, English 2, English 3 or English 4 (credit recovery only) This course is open to students who have previously failed Semester 1 or Semester 2 of English 1, 2, 3 or 4. Session one will cover semester one material and session two will cover semester two material. There is no cost for MHS students. MATHEMATICS Algebra 1 (credit recovery only) This course is open to students who have previously failed Semester 1 or Semester 2 of Algebra 1. Session one will cover semester one material and session two will cover semester two material. Students will develop the basic terminology, skills, and concepts of algebra including working with expressions, solving equations, and graphing functions. This course is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for Math. There is no cost for MHS students. Algebra 2 (credit recovery only) This course is open to students who have previously failed Semester 1 or Semester 2 of Algebra 2. Session one will cover semester one material and session two will cover semester two material. In this course basic algebra concepts are reviewed and expanded to include such topics as complex numbers, advanced polynomial equations, rational functions, powers, roots and radicals. This course is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for Math. There is no cost for MHS students. Geometry This course is open to students who have previously failed Semester 1 or Semester 2 of Geometry, or want to advance more quickly to other advanced math courses. Session one will cover semester one material and session two will cover semester two material. In this course students will study transformational geometry to extend their knowledge of the geometry skills introduced in previous courses. This course is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for Math. Incoming freshman interested in taking this course for advancement will need Math Department approval. If taking this course for advancement, students must register for both sessions of summer school. If taking this course for credit recovery, there is no cost for MHS students. SCIENCE Biology (credit recovery only) This course is open to students who have previously failed Semester 1 or Semester 2 of Biology. Session one will cover semester one material and session two will cover semester two material. This course emphasizes reading comprehension, data analysis, practical experimentation, hypothesis formulation, data collection, problem solving and critical thinking as they relate to the life sciences. There is no cost for MHS students.
6 Chemistry This course is open to students who have previously failed Semester 1 or Semester 2 of Chemistry, or simply want to advance more quickly in the science courses. Session one will cover semester one material and session two will cover semester two material. This course focuses on experimental design, scientific inquiry, data analysis, mathematical calculation and scientific reading. If taking this course for advancement, students must register for both sessions of summer school. If taking this course for credit recovery, there is no cost for MHS students. SPECIALIZED COURSES GradPoint (credit recovery only) This course is an individualized, computer interaction program that enables students to recover credits lost due to previous failures and/or transitions from other schools. Core content courses and several electives are offered through the GradPoint experience. This is a pass/fail course. Prerequisite: Guidance Counselor referral. SOCIAL STUDIES Economics This course is open to incoming 10th, 11th and 12th graders. Economics focuses on topics such as personal budgets, credit, investment, economic systems, the business cycle and inflation. Students will engage in discussions, simulations and research on economic topics of interest. Students will meet the state requirement for Consumer Education by successfully completing this course. Students may take this course to get ahead. If taking this course for credit recovery, there is no cost for MHS students. United States Government & Politics This course is open to incoming 11th and 12th graders. U.S. Government & Politics provides an introduction to the American political system. The major goal is to provide students with the factual knowledge and analytical skills necessary to be an educated and participatory member of our democratic system. Students must pass the Constitution test in order to pass this class. Students may take this course to get ahead. Prerequisite: U.S. History or AP U.S. History. If taking this course for credit recovery, there is no cost for MHS students. United States History (credit recovery only) This course is open to students who have previously failed Semester 1 or Semester 2 of United States History. Session one will cover semester one material and session two will cover semester two material. This course offers students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of our nation s past while developing important skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom. In this course students will analyze important historical events, ideas and individuals through a thematic lens to make connections and see trends and patterns throughout our history. There is no cost for MHS students.
7 World Studies (credit recovery only) This course is open to students who have previously failed Semester 1 or Semester 2 of World Studies. Session one will cover semester one material and session two will cover semester two material. This course is designed to help students develop an understanding of past events in order to comprehend present issues. Students will explore other cultures in order to understand their role in an interconnected global community. There is no cost for MHS students. WELLNESS Driver s Education Please see the driver s education section of this course guide for information. Health This course provides a comprehensive overview of health and wellness. The course will explore topics related to nutrition, physical fitness, stress management, disease prevention, substance abuse and healthy relationships. If taking this course for credit recovery, there is no cost for MHS students. Physical Education (credit recovery only) This course is for credit recovery only. Students will attend a physical education class at Mundelein High School. There is no cost for MHS students. ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS Spanish Refresher Designed for incoming Freshmen going into Spanish 2, the Spanish Refresher course will help language learners transition smoothly into the MHS language program. Students will improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through meaningful, authentic communication in an immersion-based environment. (not for credit) Summer Book Club Learning how to talk about books plays a big part in literacy success. No matter what your current reading level, you will benefit from this course as you learn the necessary skills to discuss your favorite summer reading material. (not for credit) Summer STEAM Camp It is time to get geared up for another high-tech STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Summer Camp at Mundelein High School! Open to incoming 1st -9th graders. (Not for credit) For more information, please see the STEAM webpage at
8 DRIVER S EDUCATION/BEHIND THE WHEEL FAQ s REGISTRATION Registration will begin on April 1, Driver s Education classes during the summer have been very popular. Please understand that enrollments are limited. Register EARLY in order to guarantee Behind the Wheel; space is limited. Registration for non-mhs students will only be accepted in person. The registration deadline for Session 1 is April 26, 2018 The registration deadline for Session 2 is May 24, 2018 ELIGIBILITY Driver s Education/Behind the Wheel courses are offered to students who have completed one year of high school. Students are required to have passed eight courses the previous two semesters. Current freshman student who turn fifteen on or before May 24, 2019 would be eligible for Session 1 of Driver Education. Current freshman student who turn fifteen on or before June 21, 2019 would be eligible for Session 2 of Driver Education. TUITION The Driver s Education/Behind the Wheel fee is $ NO REFUNDS will occur unless the course is cancelled. Only cash or credit cards will be accepted. No checks will be accepted for the registration fee. Registration for MHS students may be made in person in the Guidance Office or online at When registering online, be sure to register under Camps, Clinics & Classes ; click on Summer. Do not register under Student Fees or under Student Fees Non-MHS students must register in person and provide a copy of the student s birth certificate. There is also a one-time fee of $20.00 which must accompany the student s permit application. This fee is paid to the Secretary of State for the driver s permit. Checks must be made out to the Secretary of State. This fee is due at the permit application test in May for Session 1 and June for Session 2. CALENDAR Please note: The Driver s Education staff will notify the Driver Education/Behind the Wheel students of classroom and Behind the Wheel class/drive times by May 24th for Session 1 and June 14th. Session 1: June 3 June 27, 2019 Session 2: July 1 - July 25, 2019 (No school on July 4)
9 ATTENDANCE Attendance is critical! Contact Mr. Whitson in case of an emergency absence. All absences must be made up. ENROLLMENT The following is required to enroll in the Summer School Driver s Education class: Register online at (under Camps, Clinics & Classes ; click on Summer ) or in the Guidance Office. Do not register under Student Fees or under Student Fees $350 course fee paid with credit card or cash only. Checks are not accepted. (Nonrefundable, unless the course is cancelled) Instruction permit application and $20 fee payable to the Illinois Secretary of State (will be required at the Instruction Permit test held in May for Session 1 and June for Session 2) Birth certificate required for non-mhs students INSTRUCTION PERMIT Students will complete an online instruction permit application. Make sure you bring your $20.00 check made payable to the Secretary of State. Online Permit Test - Session 1: Registered students will be notified of dates and times by May 3rd. Online Permit Test - Session 2: Registered students will be notified of dates and times by June 7th. STATE REGULATIONS The following is required by State Law to obtain an Illinois driver s license: Must be 16 years of age Must have completed a state-approved driver s education course Driver s permit must be held for a minimum of nine months Must practice driving a minimum of 50 hours, including 10 hours of nighttime driving, supervised by an adult 21 years of age or older A social security number is necessary to obtain a driver s license. Students should allow three weeks between application and receipt of a social security number. OUT-OF-DISTRICT STUDENTS Any high school student may attend the Mundelein High School Summer School program. Students who do not attend Mundelein High School during the school year should confirm with their home school counselor that the course credit will be accepted. You must provide a copy of your birth certificate when registering for Driver s Education/Behind the Wheel.
