4 Welcome We hope you find this course booklet useful in helping you make the right decisions about your studies after Year 11. The Post 16 provision offers over 15 subjects across Levels 2 & 3 in vocational courses for September Learners who wish to study level 3 qualifications will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs graded 4 to 9. There are some subject specific entry requirements that are detailed in the booklet. Those learners who achieve these requirements but perhaps do not attain a grade 4 or above in English Language or Maths will still have access to some Level 3 subjects and will have to resit Maths and / or English until they attain a level 4 or above. Learners who cannot access Level 3 courses directly have the opportunity to study an Access course. This programme allows learners to study more Level 2 subjects and resit English Language and Maths so that by the end of the year learners will have met the criteria to access our level 3 provision or seek other opportunities such as college or apprenticeships. 5 Care, Support & Guidance We pride ourselves in knowing every student choosing to study with us personally. Your allocated tutor will work with you daily to make sure you are on track to make progress and succeed to the best of your ability in all of your courses. Mr Hinsley is our Post 16 Pastoral Manager who will support you throughout your time in Post 16. Mr Hinsley has over 20 years experience working with young adults and is always on hand to support learners on a wide range of issues affecting their education. Standards & Expectations We have high expectations of all students with regard to attendance and behaviour in line with the Academy core values. We expect students to act as role models to younger students and ambassadors within the local community. 5 All learners are expected to achieve at least 96% attendance, attend Tutor group 4 times a week and assemblies as required. Learners must also adhere to the Post 16 dress code at all times

8 Entry Pathways & Requirements Pathway 1 5 GCSE s at grade 4-9 including English and Maths =Three Level 3 BTEC Subjects + additional subjects such as Urdu / CORE Mathematics Pathway 2 5 GCSE s at grade 4-9 not including English or Maths =Three Level 3 BTEC Subjects including English or Maths re-sit Pathway 3 Less than 5 GCSE s at grade 4-9 = Level 2 Access year including English and/or Maths re-sit Students must also meet individual entry requirements for subjects. See course Information for specific details. Application Process Request or download an Application Form (available from P16 Office, Reception or website) Complete Application Form and return to reception by Friday 11th January All applicants will be invited to interview with a member of the Post 16 team Offer made following interviews and reference requests Enrolment to Post 16 on GCSE results day (Thursday 22nd August) 8

9 Level 2 Access The Bradford Academy Level 2 Access course is designed for those learners who achieve less that five 4-9 passes at GCSE. Resit Mathematics and English will be compulsory for those learners without a GCSE grade 4 or above in either subject. It is important that you read the course content carefully and choose the course that best suits you, your skills and ambitions. 10 BUSINESS Level 2 BTEC First Certificate (2 GCSE s) ENTRY REQUIREMENTS We expect students to have the following qualifications: Less than 5 GCSEs grade 4-9 Learners who have already studied this course in year 11 will NOT be able to repeat it. COURSE CONTENT You will study the following 8 units: Enterprise in the Business World Finance for Business Promoting a Brand Principles of Customer Service About Business During the course you will: Gain an excellent introduction to the business sector Learn what is a business and what does it do? Be introduced to the language and terminology used in Business Explore the types of costs that businesses incur, from initial start-up costs to the ongoing running costs of the business Develop transferable skills, including working with others, problem solving, independent study and personal, learning and thinking skills Have the opportunity to gain broad knowledge and understanding of, and develop skills, in the Business Sector Sales and Personal Selling Introduction to Retail Business Recruitment and Selection Principles of Marketing ASSESSMENT Units are assessed through coursework, controlled assessments and written exams. PROGRESSION This BTEC qualifications in Business is a nationally recognised qualification for entering employment and many Post 16 institutions. This will provide you with a qualification equivalent to two GCSEs should you wish to continue to A Levels. About Health & Social During the course you will: Gain an excellent introduction to the Health Care sector Develop an understanding of the different aspects of human growth and development across the main life stages COURSE CONTENT You will study the following 7 units: Human Lifespan Development Healthy Living Health & Social Care Values Effective Communication in HSC Understand the develop essential skills to plan and carry out creative and therapeutic activities in a health and social care environment Explore what is meant by a balanced diet and its effects on the body Investigate the different forms of communication and how they are used effectively in health & social care Social Influences on Health & Wellbeing The Impact of Nutrition on Health & Wellbeing Creative & Therapeutic Activities in HSC ASSESSMENT Units are assessed through coursework, controlled assessments and written exams. PROGRESSION This BTEC qualifications in Health & Social is a nationally recognised qualification for entering employment and many Post 16 institutions. This will provide you with a qualification equivalent to two GCSEs should you wish to continue to A Levels. Past learners have gone on to further study in Health and Social, Child Nursing, Education, Nutrition and Midwifery. 12 Level 3 At level 3 we have designed a programme which offers a range of subjects and gives learners the opportunity to achieve the best possible grades and gain essential employability skills within their chosen qualifications. This year we are offering a range of courses which are designed to help learners of all abilities progress into further education and employment. Our Level 3 courses are available as BTEC/CTEC qualifications. These are qualifications that are predominantly coursework based but will also involve examinations. Resit Mathematics and English will be compulsory for those learners without a grade 4 in either subject. It is important that you read the course content and entry requirements carefully and choose the courses that best suit you, your skills and ambitions. Below is a list of all level 3 courses we are provisionally offering. 13 APPLIED SCIENCE Level 3 BTEC National Diploma (2 A-Levels) ENTRY REQUIREMENTS We expect students to have the following qualifications: 5 GCSEs grade 4-9 CONTENT Grade 4 in GCSE English Grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics Grade 5 in GCSE Science You will study these 8 units: Principles and Applications of Science I Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques Scientific Investigation Skills About Applied Science With an estimated 5.8 million people employed in the applied science industry across the UK, there s plenty of opportunity for a career in this sector. During the course you will: Practise experimental scientific techniques and explore how they are applied in industry Develop knowledge and understanding of concepts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics Gain the underpinning knowledge and skills needed to meet industry requirements Explore ways in which topical scientific issues are presented in the media Investigate the role of a scientist and the different career paths open to you Physiology of Human Body Systems Laboratory Techniques and their Application Principles and Applications of Science II Investigative Project Microbiology & Microbiological techniques ASSESSMENT Units are assessed by a mixture of written assignments, set practical tasks and examinations. PROGRESSION The BTEC National Diploma is equivalent to 2 A-Levels and will gain you UCAS tariff points should you wish to continue to university. You can progress onto further and higher education courses such as nursing, paramedic and biomedical sciences degrees at university. Future careers could include nursing, midwifery, forensic science, health care, food technology, analytical science, environmental science and many more. You will develop skills valued by universities and industries, such as written and verbal communication, independence and organisation. Then this is the course for you. During the course you will: Gain an excellent introduction to the business sector Develop knowledge, understanding, skills and attributes required in the industry sector COURSE CONTENT Unit Extended Cert Nat Diploma Exploring Business Developing a Marketing Campaign Personal & Business Finance Recruitment & Selection Process International Business Principles of Management Managing an Event The English Legal System Use case studies to explore complex or unfamiliar situations Demonstrate practical and technical skills using appropriate presentations and role plays Use critical thinking, approach non-routine problems applying expert and creative solutions using systems and technology Develop interpersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development ASSESSMENT Units are assessed through coursework, controlled assessments and written exams. 15 CHILD DEVELOPMENT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS We expect students to have the following qualifications: 5 GCSEs grade 4-9 Grade 4 in GCSE English Grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics About Child Development During the course you will: Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate (1 A-Level) Acquire the background key theories that will govern all aspects of your working practice and everything you do as an early years educator. Learn about the theories and models of development that explain how and why children develop CONTENT You will study these 7 units: Children s Development Look at children s development of speech, communication, language, literacy and numeracy skills. Understand the responsibilities of a professional and promote and maintain health & safety. Development of Children s Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Skills Play and Learning Keeping Children Safe Children s Physical Development, Care & Health Needs Working with Parents & Others in Early Years The Early Years Foundation Stage ASSESSMENT Units are assessed through coursework, controlled assessments and written exams. PROGRESSION This BTEC course is equivalent to 1 A-Level and will gain you UCAS tariff points should you wish to continue to university. Learners who successfully complete the course could go on to further and higher education in areas such as social care, nursery nursing, child nursing, child psychology and many more. 17 IT Level 3 OCR Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma (1 A-Level) ENTRY REQUIREMENTS We expect students to have the following qualifications: 5 GCSEs grade 4-9 Grade 4 in GCSE English or Mathematics About IT Do you enjoy learning about technology and how it works? Careers in IT can involve creating applications or systems, solving problems with technology or supporting people who use it. During the course you will: CONTENT You will study these 5 units: Fundamentals of IT Global Information Application Design Project Management Develop your knowledge, understanding and skills of the principles of IT Gain an insight into the IT sector as you investigate the pace of technological change, IT infrastructure, the flow of information on a global scale, and the importance of legal and security considerations Develop professional, personal and social skills through interaction with peers, stakeholders and clients, as well as theoretical knowledge and understanding to underpin these skills Product Development ASSESSMENT Units are assessed through coursework and exams.
