1 Curriculum overview for SCIENCE Science at Key Stage 4 Current Year 11 Core GCSE double award (2 GCSEs) Outline of course and examples of learning outcomes: This course is suitable for the majority of students and is sufficient for students to continue their study of any Science at A level, BTEC, Diploma, GNVQ or NVQ level. In this course learners will further develop their understanding of Science that they see around them and that affects their everyday life. Students will learn new practical skills and will learn more about questioning, analysing and evaluating scientific problems. Projects or Topics covered in the Coursework The course is organised into units and pupils will complete six of these over the two years two, Biology, two Chemistry and two Physics. Some of the topics they will learn about include: Responses to a Changing Environment; The Earth s Sea and Atmosphere; Energy and the Future; Nuclear Fission and Nuclear Fusion; Organisms and Energy and Chemical Reactions. Learning Organisation The course will commence in term 1 of year 10. Students will complete Core Science GCSE in year 10 and Additional Science GCSE in year 11. There are three lessons of Science each week In addition to the exams, learners will complete at least two Controlled Assessments (one each year) which will test their investigative and practical skills. The GCSE course is designed to meet the diverse aims and ambitions of students from those who simply want to understand the world around them, to those who want to progress onto further, in depth study. Independent Learning Students will receive at least one piece of independent learning each fortnight. Independent learning set may include researching theories,

2 making revision notes or mind maps, completing work started in class, or answering exam style questions. This course can lead onto: Continuing studies to A level in any of the three sciences (Biology, Physics or Chemistry), BTEC, diploma, GNVQ or NVQ. Students may follow this with a degree, for example in Medicine, Physiotherapy, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Zoology, Engineering, and many more. Associated employment might be a Doctor, Pharm acologist, Engineer, Optician, or Physiotherapist.
