JULY/AUG 2018 Students can only begin practice if they have completed the sports registration and have visited their doctor for a physical (doctor's signed physical form will need to be provided to school prior to first practice). However, most health insurance will not let you have a physical (well-child) before a year is up from your last physical, and that is okay; if last year s physical was after , we will use last year s physical until you see a doctor after your year-end date. School begins August 29 th, preschool begins September 10 th. If you have difficulty accessing the online registration, please call the school at in Palouse.
2 PALOUSE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL S LETTER Summer is well underway and as we turn our attention to the 2018/2019 school year, we are excited to welcome Mrs. Gehring to the 5 th grade and Mr. Bustamante to the high school math position. Both teachers are welcome additions to our staff and I look forward to working with them throughout this next year. This past school year Palouse School and schools around the nation faced challenges focused on safety. Many of our school improvements center on safety (electronic locks, new doors, etc). Please remember, if students are in the gym or school they need to be accompanied by an adult. If you are 18 or older and out of school, please see Mr. Lentz or Mr. Pillers if you need a school door code, or a weight room door code if you would like to use the weight room. Please do not share keys or codes with students. Thank you for continuing to take care and monitor our facilities. The high school schedule is now online and students have done their initial registrations. As you look at the schedule you will notice several additions and course title changes that more accurately reflect course content. Leadership is a course we are adding this year; it can be taken for dual credit or as a high school elective. Additionally, titles like Commodities and Ag Business have been included to reflect curriculum. Starting July 9 th the online student registration will open, or the school will be open August 13 and 14 for registration in the office. Staff will be back for in-services August 27 and 28 with students returning the 29 th of August. Students participating in football start August 15 th, and volleyball or cross country start August 20 th ; please have all of your paperwork turned into the office before these dates. I look forward to seeing everyone in the fall. Summer is going to be gone before we know it and the fair is right around the corner. Please come in to visit or me with questions as we prepare for the school year. Thank you for your continued support and GO VIKINGS! Mike Jones, Palouse School Principal
3 Sarita Matuszek -Devaney and Morgan Hobbs FFA State Convention & State Envirothon Gar-Pal had 26 kids attend State Convention and 5 teams competed in events including, Milk Quality, Food Science, Veterinary Science, First Year Member, and Farm Business Management. The Vet Science team (Emily Bagott, Katie Arrasmith, Payson Griner, Shannon Stokes) was in the top 20 and the Food Science Team (Caden Sanderson, Tanner Anderson, Ely Hawkins, Riley Pedersen, Ethan Hawkins) was in the top 15! It was a great week of fun, laughter, and learning, concluding with a night of chapter bonding at the bowling alley! Our State Envirothon team placed 4th overall, and we were the 2nd highest in the oral presentation and the soils stations! Local FFA and 4-H members all have their animals and are working to prepare them for the Palouse Empire Fair, September 6 th -9 th. Members will all attended a Quality Assurance meeting to learn about proper care in an effort to put a quality product before consumers. Each show person will be looking for community support to offset the high cost of purchasing feed for their growing market animal. If you would like part of a market animal in your freezer, please contact the FFA Advisor Megan Colle at mcolle@garpal.net or Mark Sawyer at msawyer@garpal.net. Patrick Orfe, Danny Laughary, Olivia Knauff, Christian Burt The 2018 Garfield-Palouse High School Talent Show took place on May 16th, and again, was a huge success. Many of our extremely talented students shared their art, dance, video production, and music skills with the rest of the student body. What a great way to showcase a lot of the effort and hard work that goes on in the various classrooms in our building. A special thanks to all of the instructors who mentor and guide our students in the arts. And thanks to all who participated; hopefully next year our show will include even more of our talented students. A personal achievement and a Gar-Pal HS milestone were seized in the American Society of Civil Engineers contest TrigStar. Christian Burt, freshman, took second in the state! Christian was rewarded with $500 for his efforts. It is the first time that Gar-Pal has had a place in the top three at state.

5 High School class schedules will be entered in Skyward the week of June 18. Parents and students will be able to view their courses for the 2018/2019 school-year after that time. Students will have through the first 5 days of the fall block to change elective classes. Spring block electives can be changed at a later time through the first week of those courses. Class of 2019 students: You can register online to take the SAT or ACT in August. Fall test dates are also available. Be sure to register for available exams no later than November 2018 so that scores will be available for you to submit with your college applications. SAT or ACT scores are required for applicants to 4-year college. Fee waivers are available to qualified students. The school website is where to find the daily news bulletin, your student s Skyward account for grades and lunch account, highlights of events and achievements, and how to contact who you need. Summer reading helps kids and teens learn all summer! It helps keep their skills up - and have fun! When kids stop reading, they actually lose some of what they learned over the school year. This is called the "summer slide." By providing different ways of learning through free events and hands-on learning, the Palouse Library gives kids a fun reason to keep reading and encourages them to read what they like best. Hold off the "summer slide" and keep kids ready for continued learning in the fall. June 26 th the City of Palouse library will begin the Summer Reading Program Libraries Rock ANNUAL NOTIFICATIONS The following notifications are required by state and federal law, for further information on the law and/or policy, please contact Palouse School at Board policies are available in the business office.
