2 Dear Class of 2016, We are grateful to have been given the opportunity to be your class advisors. We are also extremely proud of your accomplishment over the last four years. Our parting advice comes to you from the heart of Mr. Ed Powelson, longtime teacher, coach and Athletic Director of North Carroll High School. Congratulations and best wishes for a successful future. 3 SENIOR ACTIVITIES Non-School-Sponsored Activities Picnics and/or other social events held off campus are not school-sponsored activities, with the exception of the Senior Prom. Students who organize or attend these functions do so as individuals and do not represent North Carroll High School. Likewise, faculty members who attend or participate in any manner, including serving as chaperones or sponsors, do so as a parent or friend, but again, do not represent North Carroll High School in any authorized function. Senior Prom The Senior Prom is a formal dance for senior students and their dates. Formal attire for the evening requires gentlemen to wear tuxedo coats and slacks, or dark, business-style suits. Ladies traditionally dress for the evening in prom dresses or evening gowns. The Junior-Senior Prom will be held at the National Aquarium in Baltimore MD, on Saturday, April 30, 2016, from 8:00-11 PM. Community Awards Night Monday, June 6, 2016, 6:30-10:00 PM All students who are participating in graduation are required to attend this awards ceremony given in honor of the graduating class. This awards ceremony gives seniors the opportunity to appear before their friends and family in cap and gown and to receive community recognition. During the ceremony, seniors will be recognized for special accomplishments and could receive community-sponsored awards. Seating in the auditorium is extremely limited and on a first-come/first-served basis. No ticket or reservation is necessary for this event. It is open to the public. Senior Farewell Assembly Tuesday, June 7, :30-11 AM All students who are participating in graduation are required to attend this assembly given in honor of the graduating class. The assembly gives seniors the opportunity to appear before the student body in cap and gown and to receive school honors. During the ceremony, seniors will be recognized for special accomplishments and could receive school-sponsored awards. This is not open to the public, as seating is limited and reserved for the current student body. 2

4 POLICIES AFFECTING SENIORS Eligibility to Participate: Carroll County Public Schools In order for seniors to be eligible to participate in graduation exercises, they must complete the Maryland State Graduation Requirements by the end of the fourth marking period of their senior year. Seniors who are required to attend summer school after the date of graduation to make-up or meet requirements will not be able to participate in graduation exercises until the following year. Parents, check with your senior to be certain the requirements have been or are scheduled to be met and that course work is being completed satisfactorily. Final Examinations All seniors must take a final exam or complete a culminating activity in each course. Because attendance at graduation rehearsals is critical, any make-up examinations must be arranged prior to the first graduation rehearsal. All senior exams must be completed by June 1 st. Student Obligations Before a senior is given graduation tickets, and before final school records are approved for release to colleges or potential employers, all assigned detentions and outstanding financial obligations must be cleared. Seniors who have any questions regarding obligations should check with the teacher, coach, or media center personnel. Seniors with unresolved detention or financial obligations will be so informed at the first graduation rehearsal. Seniors are asked to resolve these matters prior to that first rehearsal. Seniors who have not met all obligations will receive only the diploma cover at the graduation ceremony. Diplomas for these seniors will be issued in the main office only after obligations have been met. Again, seniors with outstanding obligations will not receive graduation tickets until all obligations have been met. Requests for Extra Tickets for Graduation Each graduating senior will receive ten (10) tickets to the graduation ceremony at the first graduation practice. Seniors and their parents who have a good reason may request up to five (5) extra tickets to the graduation ceremony by completing a request form found in the back of this handbook and giving the form to Mrs. Peterson in the main office. Special Needs seating is included in the total number of tickets requested. All requests must be submitted no later than Friday, May 13, Seniors who do not need all ten tickets they receive are asked to return extra tickets, so that these tickets are available to students requesting extra ones. Seating at McDaniel College All guests attending the graduation ceremony must have a ticket for admission. Seating for graduation at McDaniel College is on a first-come/first-served basis. No seats may be reserved. On June 8, doors to the auditorium will open at 6:00 PM for guests holding a ticket for admission. It is very important that friends and family of graduates who are attending the graduation ceremony be seated by 6:45 PM to avoid interference with the student procession into the ceremony. Please note, an effort will be made to create a Special Needs entrance to the main lobby near the Handicap parking area. Only one guest will be permitted entrance and seating with the Special Needs ticket holder. That guest must also possess a Special Needs ticket. 3

5 Graduation Rehearsals To insure a formal ceremony during graduation on June 8, all seniors participating in graduation are required to attend all rehearsals. Seniors on work release or in internships are required to be present at the rehearsals. Inform your employers and supervisors of this obligation early to avoid unnecessary conflicts. Failure to attend rehearsals will lead to non-participation in the June 8 ceremony. These are practices in addition to the Community Awards and Farewell Assembly ceremonies. Attendance at all of these events is mandatory. Rules of conduct, processional and recessional order and seating, and school policies regarding seniors and graduation will be explained at the rehearsals. Senior questions will also be answered during the rehearsal sessions. Be aware that these rehearsals might extend beyond the tentative dismissal time, and seniors must remain for the entire rehearsal. The first required rehearsal will be at North Carroll High School on Thursday, June 2, 7:30 AM - 12 noon. This is a dress rehearsal and will include the senior panoramic picture. School will still be in session for the underclassmen, so seniors will remain in designated practice areas only (gym, stadium, auditorium) until all rehearsal needs have been met. The second required rehearsal will be Friday, June 3, from 8-11 AM. Students may attend in regular school clothes that meet CCPS dress code standards. The third required rehearsal will be Wednesday, June 8, from 12-2 PM at McDaniel College. Seniors must provide their own transportation to and from McDaniel College. Ladies are encouraged to wear the shoes they will wear at graduation to practice the long walk on uneven surfaces. 4

6 GRADUATION ETIQUETTE AND TRADITION Distribution of Diplomas The distribution of diplomas will conform to the procedure used in all Carroll County high schools. Diploma covers will be presented to the graduates at the ceremony. Diplomas will be distributed immediately following the graduation ceremony to all seniors who have met all their obligations. Graduates and parents should designate a place to meet away from the Gill Learning Center to allow graduates to leave in a timely fashion. Please do not gather in the lobby of Gill Learning Center. Following the ceremony, graduate recessional lines will proceed directly to the diploma tables located in the refurbished Gill Gymnasium where each graduate will receive a diploma envelope containing the diploma, report card, and other items. The diploma tables will be arranged alphabetically by students last names. If all obligations have not been met, the graduate s envelope will contain only a notice indicating there is an obligation to complete. Students will need to go to school on the next possible week day to fulfill obligations and receive the diploma. Graduation Photographs In order to insure the appropriate dignity for the graduation ceremony, no members of the audience will be permitted near the stage during the graduation exercises. Also, to provide an unobstructed view for those seated in the farthest areas of the audience, parents and guests are asked to take pictures from their seats without standing or moving into the aisles. An area will be reserved for those guests who wish to videotape the proceedings along the bleachers near the stage. Again, your cooperation with these requests will provide an enjoyable evening for all guests. Victor O Neill Photographers will take pictures of the graduates receiving their diplomas which will subsequently, along with the panoramic group picture taken on June 2, be loaded onto their website. For questions call: (703) Carroll County Public Schools will broadcast graduation on Channel 21 and via livestream through Caps and Gowns Caps and gowns will be distributed on March 21, At that time instructions concerning the care and preparation of the cap and gown will be given. Females will wear red gowns, and males will wear black gowns. Gentlemen will wear a white dress shirt, dark solid (no pattern) tie, dark (navy blue or black) dress slacks, black dress shoes, and black socks. Ladies will wear an appropriate non-patterned, light-colored dress or monochromatic skirt and top. Ladies will wear black dress shoes, either low-heeled pumps or sandals with ankle straps. Flip-flops are not appropriate. No jewelry or flowers are to be worn on the gown. It is appropriate, however, to wear school service awards and honor pins on the robe. Gowns should NOT be ironed, but should be removed from the bag and allowed to hang loosely for at least one week prior to the ceremonies. 5

7 Inappropriately dressed seniors will not be allowed to participate in these events. The cap should be placed upon the head with the longer point of the crown to the back. The shorter point should be centered on the forehead, down far enough so that the cap is level and parallel to the floor. The tassel is draped over the left temple. Tassels should not be pinned or sewn but should be permitted to hang naturally on the left side of the face. The changing of the tassel from the left to the right side is intended to give the graduate a feeling of personal significance and to mark graduation. The changing of the tassel will be led by the president of the class after all participating seniors have received their diploma covers during the graduation ceremony. Announcements and Name Cards Announcements and cards are distributed to those students who ordered them. An announcement does not represent a ticket to the graduation ceremony at McDaniel College. Admission to the graduation ceremony is by school-distributed ticket only. Although you may send announcements to many people, each person you intend to invite to commencement must be given an admission ticket. Obtaining name cards and announcements is the responsibility of the individual senior. Thank you Good manners and accepted social practices dictate that you thank someone for a graduation gift, for a favor, or for some courtesy extended to you. This includes individuals, organizations, and businesses that award scholarships. Never fail to acknowledge a gift. A prompt acknowledgment lets the sender know that the gift has arrived. Whenever possible, be specific in one way or another. If you merely say, "Thanks for the gift," the sender may think that you've forgotten what the gift was or that you have no use for the gift. Tell how you are using the gift or how you plan to use it. Try to make a favorable comment about the gift, or quote something complimentary which someone has said about it. If the present is a sum of money, tell what you plan to do with it. A thank you note should be enthusiastic and sincere, but never "gushy." Your thank you note should be handwritten.
