3 Selection Classification Process Historic Overview Non-Mandated Program- Created by New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), New York State Athletic Administrators Association (NYSAAA) and the State Education Department (SED) Provide for students in grades 7 through 12 a mechanism for them to participate safely at an appropriate level of competition based upon readiness rather than age and grade Selective Classification was designed to assess a student s physical fitness, physical maturation and skill, so that the student may be placed at a level of competition that should result in a fairer competitive environment, reduced injury and greater personal satisfaction

4 Current Board of Education Guidelines Request can be made by student, parent, coach, physical education teacher or director Written permission from Parent/Guardian *The middle school principal, after consultation with guidance counselor/teachers, must certify that the student possesses appropriate social and emotional maturity and that his/her academic performance is up to potential The school physician must sign off on a special physical examination and rate the student s s physiological maturity according to the Selection Classification chart * Hauppauge Policy only

5 Current Board of Education Guidelines Athletic Performance Test is administered The student receives a tryout opportunity and is evaluated by the coaching staff The Athletic Director reviews all paperwork and notifies Section XI

6 Goals and Purpose of Athletic Program The district believes that interscholastic athletics helps to provide insight to many life experiences with regard to responsibility, fair play, cooperation, concern for others, leadership, respect for authority, good citizenship, loyalty, and tolerance. 10 Statistical Breakdown Team Sport Athletes Twenty-Seven Team Sport Athletes Selectively Classified 9 of the 10 athletes classified for varsity were varsity starters s as 8 th graders (One pending this winter season) 18 students classified for Junior Varsity 8 students were starters on the varsity by their sophomore year 3 students transferred 2 students are currently freshman (Spring Athletes) 1 student is in 8 th grade (JV Starter) 1 student was a varsity starter during her Junior and Senior years 3 students were not varsity starters as sophomores

11 Statistical Breakdown Individual Sports All twenty-five students classified for varsity were starters as middle school students Five students were classified for JV: 2 are currently on varsity 2 no longer play the sport 1 student transferred

12 Golf and Bowling There are no middle school programs for golf and bowling in Suffolk County Middle school students are allowed to try-out for the JV or Varsity team. At the completion of the try-out, if the students averages place them in the top 8 on the team, they are eligible to be selectively classified Sport JV Boys Golf 8 1 Bowling Girls Golf No JV Team No JV Team Varsity 0 6

13 Recommendations 1. Athletes can only be selectively classified at the varsity level.. JV will only be considered for sports that do not have a middle school team (i.e.,( Boys Golf) Commack, Kings Park, Smithtown and Sachem have similar practices. 2. *A committee will meet during July/August prior to the upcoming school year to review all Selective Classification requests. The committee tee will consist of the following staff: Athletic Director MS Administrator HS Administrator District Office Representative MS Guidance 3. At this meeting the committee will review the social/emotional and a academic profiles of each student, as well as his/her fitness and d maturity tests. * This will replace the current procedure involving middle school l approval

14 Hauppauge Schools Selection Classification Policy Options 1. Maintain current policy Revise current policy to reflect the following recommendations: Athletes can only be selectively classified at the varsity level.. JV will only be considered for sports that do not have a middle school team (i.e., Boys Golf) A committee will meet during July/August prior to the upcoming school s year to review all Selective Classification requests. At this meeting the committee will review the social/emotional and academic profiles of each student, as well as their fitness and maturity tests. 3. Develop a new policy that will initiate the Selective Classification process for only non-contact individual sports. (Golf, Track, Tennis, Bowling, Gymnastics, and Swimming) 4. Choose not to participate in the Selection Classification program
