1 The Board of School Directors of the Ephrata Area School District, Ephrata PA, met in regular session on Monday, February 24, 2014 at Ephrata High School, 803 Oak Blvd., Ephrata, Pennsylvania. MOMENT OF SILENT MEDITATION, PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, AND RECITATION OF THE MISSION STATEMENT President Stayer asked for a moment of silent meditation, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the recitation of the District Mission Statement. EXECUTIVE SESSION President Stayer announced that the Board met in Executive Session after the January 20, 2014 meeting for personnel and contractual legal matters. WELCOME OF VISITORS BY BOARD PRESIDENT Comments/Questions from Visitors President Stayer welcomed visitors to the meeting. He opened the meeting to questions or comments from visitors for any item on the agenda except personnel items that are never discussed at public meetings. None at this time. STUDENT PRESENTATIONS Several Ephrata High School students and staff members provided presentations about Cloister FFA, German National Honor Society, and Robotics. 1

3 E. MSDSonline Agreement Agreement with MSDSonline, Chicago, IL. This program will assist the maintenance and science departments to track, manage and report the districts hazardous chemicals and provide immediate right-to-know access to safety data sheets for our employees. This is a three year agreement, the cost is $1, per year with a $ implementation charge in year one. F. Worley and Obetz Agreement The purchase of the following product from Worley and Obetz, Inc, Lancaster, PA, effective February 1, 2014 and continue until the gallons are exhausted, approximately one year: E Unleaded Gasoline 42,000 gallons $ per gallon III. Revised School Calendar (Attachment #3) It was moved by Mr. Stayer, seconded by Mr. Weber, that the Ephrata Area Board of School Directors approves the revised School Calendar. REPORT OF STUDENT REPRESENTIVE Taylor Mahlandt Akron Mrs. Horner reports that students and staff at Akron are participating in Pennies for Patients for the leukemia and lymphoma association. February also marked the 100 th day of school, so Zero the Hero visited to help celebrate. Students and staff reviewed the school wide positive behavior rules. Clay Mrs. Darkes reports that during February, students and staff collected pet supplies for local shelters. The PTO held their annual talent show. Over 40 children participated in the show. The Clay PTO also had a Snuggle Up and Read evening. Fulton Mr. McCracken reports that Fulton students and staff celebrated the 100 th day of school on February 19 by dressing in 100 items or as if they were 100 years old. Second grade students made a donation of 100 items to Ephrata Area Social Services. Also on February 19, Fulton held a clearance clinic to assist parents with the volunteer clearance application process. Highland Mr. Deemer reports that 2 nd Grade students took part in a math review afternoon. Each classroom had centers for the students to complete based on skills taught during the first semester. They will be doing two more review days in the second semester. Intermediate and Middle School Students are preparing for PSSA testing in Reading and Math that will take place in March. In science a Minute to Win It fundraising challenge took place in which students donated money to participate in contests. All proceeds are being donated to Ephrata Area Social Services. The Grade 6-8 spelling bee was held in early February. The winner was Mary Miller (Grade 8). Seventh Grade students Amy Babich, Mason Brown, and Jonathon Weiss were selected as finalists in the Ephrata Area Sertoma Club Heritage Essay Contest. The topic was What 6

7 America Means to Me. Sixty 7 th and 8 th Grade students competed in the Middle School science fair, and 24 students qualified for the County Science Fair to be held in March. The Middle School Mini-Thon fundraiser for the Four Diamonds Fund kicked off with an assembly. The event will be held on Saturday, March 8 from 5:00-9:00 PM. If the event raises $5,000, Mr. Cucciuffo will have his head shaved. High School Mrs. Eby reports that the high school hosted their Mini-Thon assembly last Friday. The assembly marked the beginning of the campaign at the high school to raise funds for Mini-Thon and the 4 Diamonds Fund. II. REPORT OF LANCASTER COUNTY CAREER & TECHNOLOGY CENTER JOINT OPERATING COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVE Jenny L. Miller The CTC Business Manager thanked school boards for approving the budget. An update was provided about construction projects. The first class of CTC adult degree graduates received their degrees. III. IV. REPORT OF LANCASTER-LEBANON IU13 BOARD REPRESENTATIVE Tim Stauffer No report. REPORT OF PSBA REGION IX LIAISON Glenn R. Martin The proposed state budget was recently presented. A hearing regarding charter schools will be held in March. V. REPORT OF EPHRATA AREA EDUCATION FOUNDATION LIAISON Robert E. Miller No report. VI. REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT Dr. Brian M. Troop Tim McCormick was introduced to the Board. Construction updates were provided for the Akron and Fulton projects and the potential turf project. Winter scholar athletes and Scholastic Writing Award recipients were recognized. Presentations will be made about the recent National School Boards Association Advocacy Institute and the process for instituting a new course at Ephrata High School SECTION 5 MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS & ADJOURNMENT I.
