8 Do I take the rigorous class and risk a lower grade or take the easier class and ensure a good grade? Consider time commitments in and out of school Focus on strengths/interests (subject areas and organization) Consider teacher recommendations Take an honest look at past performance in subject areas If an A/B is likely in the rigorous course, go for it with a positive attitude & work hard!

9 Consider Requirements for College Indiana University Bloomington 1 credit min. of Pre Cal, Trig, or Calculus is required to apply to IU/B Math in the 7th semester of high school is required even if you have completed diploma requirements prior to senior year Purdue requires 8 semesters of math See website for acceptable math courses under Admissions Prefer seniors to take a math courses even if diploma requirements are met PLTW Biomedical Sciences may not be considered a lab science Check admission websites for other schools to see requirements

10 Senior Options Work Based Learning Program (WBL) 3 credits Take required courses for diploma in combination with electives to fill 3-4 class periods & are released to complete an internship Interdisciplinary Cooperative Education (ICE) 3 credits Must have a paid job by May 1 st 2017 & maintain employment through Will be removed if employment is not maintained and required to have a full day schedule This course is worth 3 credits (1 for ICE class and 2 for on-the-job experience). Class = resume, on-the-job soft skill training, conflict resolution skills, etc. Students will attend MHS through 4 th period (3 classes + 1 ICE class period) Students must complete the WBL or ICE application and return to Guidance by Feb 15th All partial day options are full year only. You cannot be moved into one of these programs for the Spring semester. 11 Career Focused Education Opportunities Area 31 Career Center Typically worth 3 elective credits (MHS classes for 3 periods, 1 period to travel there/back, 3 Periods at Area 31) Options to earn dual credits or industry certifications while still in high school Provides vocational and career specific skill training Programs can be competitive grades, attendance, discipline are all taken into account for acceptance (2.0 GPA is a good goal, some require higher GPA) Ben Davis follows an extended year calendar You ARE expected to attend even on days MHS does not have school or has a delay due to weather Must have transportation AM Arrive at MHS by 6:45 a.m. to catch the bus to Ben Davis PM Will need transportation after 3 p.m. Students attending off-site programs will not be able to ride the bus Application Link: Applications are due to Guidance no later than Feb 15 th!

12 Education Professions I: Cadet Teaching & Peer Tutoring Both Programs: Open to Juniors and Seniors Work with cooperating teacher to learn educational strategies 1 class periods per semester and students can earn 2 credits for the year Good way to build college/career resume Must go through an approval process before finalized in schedule Education Professions I: Cadet Teaching Assist/Tutor K 8 th grade students at Northwood or PHMS only Must have passed Algebra I and English 10 ECA Looking for model students in grades, attendance, discipline, etc. Peer Tutoring: Life Skills Assist/Tutor Life Skills students at MHS Must have 2.0 GPA Looking for model students in grades, attendance, discipline, etc.

Complete 1 paper request form during the classroom presentation to turn in to the Guidance Office by February 15 th at the end of the school day All online course requests must be entered in Skyward by February 15 th by 5 p.m. Next steps. Counselors will meet individually with students to go over requests and lock them in Students, see your counselor to make changes to their requests after the individual meeting until May 1, 2017 Changes must be approved by a parent No schedule changes will be accepted after May 1 st, 2017!
