Nido Qubein What a wonderful January! The 50 and even 60 degree temperatures have been a great surprise. We now have approximately 2 1/2 months of instruction until state assessment. It amazes me how quickly times does go by. As we only have a limited number of instructional days before the new state assessment, we believe it is important to review parts of the new accountability system. Today I want to address 2 of the new sections; End of Course Assessments and Program Reviews. Let s start with End of Course assessments for high school students. In regards to the state assessment, students will take exams when they complete English II, Algebra II, Biology and U. S. History. In our district, all high school courses will have End of Course Assessments for students. These assessments are 20% of the students final grades as stated in board policy. What does this mean for a student s grade? Basically we have 4 grading periods in a school year and each of these 20% of the student s final grade with the assessment score being the final 20%. These assessments are comprehensive and require students to apply what they have learned throughout the course. Now, let s move on to Program Reviews. Program reviews are systematic ways of looking at the curriculum, instruction, assessments, student work, professional development and administrative support involved in a specific program. The goals of these reviews are to improve the programs, to make sure all kids have access to these programs and that they are school-wide, and allow KIDS to show what they know in ways beyond written assessments, We are beginning with 3 programs; Arts & Humanities, Practical Living & Vocational Studies and Writing. This year, these reviews will not figure into our accountability. The state department is allowing us one year to follow procedure and refine our practices before we are accountable. Remember, End of Course assessments and Program Reviews are simply parts of our new accountability system. And this system is designed to guide us to look at the whole educational experience for KIDS, to make sure that all KIDS learn, all KIDS show growth, and that program skills are integrated across all contents. We are excited about the opportunity for our students to demonstrate in different ways that they are learning at higher levels and becoming more College and Career Ready!

2 FCS Connection Page 2 New ewalk Recently, the district instructional team and principals trained in using the new ewalk document for walk through observations in Floyd County Schools. The new ewalk has a stronger focus on what level students are learning and what students are being asked to do. Principals then went to an elementary, a middle and a high school to use the new walk-through along with central office staff. Angela Duncan, Director of Instruction and Special Education, said, We practiced using the new document to insure that the focus is on improving instruction and raising rigor. We wanted to be able to provide better feedback for teachers with this process. Allen Central Middle School Annual Animal Shelter Community Service project was a huge success again this year. Students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades brought in pet food, pet supplies, old towels, and monetary donations for the Floyd County Animal Shelter. ACMS believes volunteerism is one of the most valuable lessons we can teach our middle school students. 5 Page 5 District 85 Governor s Cup Champs: Allen Central Middle District 86 Governor s Cup Champs: John M Stumbo Elementary ACHS Students Receive All A Scholarships Allen Central High School seniors, Kyle Griffith and Julianne Halbert, were among 58 other students in the state of Kentucky selected to receive the All A Classic scholarship. These students were chosen from over 500 candidates across the state. Griffith and Halbert received $1,000 to use for their postsecondary education.
