C. How do I kw whether I meet the pre-requisites for a course? Course pre-requisites can be found on the course sequence charts located in the Guidance section of the lghs.net website. If you do t meet the pre-requisites for a desired course, discuss whether there are summer school options with your counselor. D. I want to sign up for leadership/yearbook/newspaper, but I am t sure if I ll be selected for the course. Should I register for that course or for my alternate course? In this situation, register for the alternate class. If you are selected for leadership/ yearbook/newspaper, we will change your schedule to reflect the new course instead of the alternate. E. 11 Los Gatos High School Guidance Policies and Procedures Course Load: Periods 1-6, freshmen and sophomores must be enrolled in a minimum of six classes each semester; juniors and seniors must be enrolled in a minimum of five. Athletics, which are scheduled as 7 th period courses, count towards graduation, but t the minimum number of academic courses. Requests to Change Teachers: Requests to change teachers are t hored unless the student has previously taken a class from that teacher and would prefer a new learning experience. A request is subject to space availability and other master schedule constraints. Adding a Class: Students may add a year- long course during the first two weeks of the school year. Class additions are subject to space availability and fulfillment of all pre- requisites. Changing Course Levels: Once the school year has started, students cant change course levels (i.e. move from Algebra 2 Accelerated to Algebra 2 or Physics AP to Physics) until the end of the first marking period. At the seventh week of the semester, a one- week window opens for students to request a course level change. As always, changes are subject to space availability and other constraints. Dropping a Class: Assuming that the minimum number of classes will be maintained, a student can drop a course given the following timeline: During the first two weeks of school, a n- required course, including electives, may be dropped without penalty (assuming other school policies are met). During weeks three through six, classes can be changed or dropped. During week seven (after the marking period), students can drop n- required courses without penalty, assuming other school policies are met. This would include electives, world language courses, and third or fourth year math/science courses. Most classes are year- length and cant be dropped at the semester. An exception will be considered when a student fails the first semester of a math or world language course. Pre- Requisites and Appeals: Once final semester grades are available, pre- requisite checks are made and students who do t meet qualifications will placed in the necessary pre- requisite course. As an example, a student requesting Geometry who finishes Algebra 1 with a D+ will be rescheduled to Algebra 1 for the next school year. If a student is still interested in taking the course, s/he should contact the Guidance Counselor immediately to discuss remedial or grade improvement options as well as an opportunity to appeal placement.
