3 How to See Your Counselor at LHHS To request an appointment with your counselor, you will need to scan your counselor s QR Code (QR Codes are located in the counseling office) Answer the questions on the Google Form from your cell phone & hit Submit. If you do NOT have QR Reader, there are instructions in the counseling office on how to download a QR Reader App so that you can sign up to see your counselor. If you do NOT have a cell phone, you may use the laptop in the counseling office so that you can request an appointment with your counselor.

5 How do I Download a QR Reader App? Go to the App Store on your smart phone Search for QR Reader There are a lot of free ones Download the app to your phone You are now able to read QR codes You can use Snapchat to read QR Codes

6 Every FRESHMAN Should Know That Your FRESHMAN year counts!!! Pass your classes. ATTEND Your Classes. You are building workplace skills. Self-reliance & personal initiative are important. Stay on course for graduation! You must meet deadlines!!!!!! How do you manage your time??? Get Organized!!! Use a planner or organizational device!

7 Free Lunch Applications & College Admissions Students who are eligible for the Free or Reduced lunch program are also eligible for fee waivers for both the SAT and ACT and college admission fees, as well as fee reductions for AP tests. These students are also eligible for reduced summer school fees. Parents MUST apply for the federal free/reduced lunch program EACH year at registration in order for their children to be eligible. Parents can also apply at

8 Get On Track for Graduation Students must have: 6 credits to be a Sophomore 12 credits to be a Junior 18 credits to be a Senior 26 credits to Graduate! In order to gain credits, you must pass the class with a grade of 70 or above.

9 GPA/Rank GPA is the cumulative average of your semester grades for each class. It is recalculated after each full semester (not summer). Currently, RISD calculates GPA on both a 100 point scale and a 5.0 (weighted 4.0) scale. However, freshmen will receive only a GPA on the 100 point scale in June based on their 9 th grade year. 5 points are added to PASSING semester grades of PreAP classes and Honors classes. 10 points are added to passing semester grades of AP classes, dual credit classes, and OnRamps classes. RISD no longer ranking except top 10% at the end of junior year. Since we are non-ranking, the college will assign you a rank.

10 Attendance Policy and HS Credits State Law requires that you must be in attendance 90% of the time to receive credit for a class. If you have more than 9 absences, you may not receive credit for your class(es). (This can happen even if you are passing your class) Notes must be turned into the main office within 3 days of an absence in order for it to be excused.

11 Top 10% Rule- College Admissions Students who are in the top 10% of their senior class will automatically be admitted to a Texas public college or university Exception UT Austin--% may be lower Announced September of junior year Many schools have automatic admissions between 15-25% If you are not automatically admitted, that does NOT mean you are automatically denied, they just look at more information

12 Community Service Community Service is becoming more and more important in determining college admissions and scholarships. Service Learning Award Students who complete 60 hours of community service in grades 9-12 including 30 hours their senior year will receive the service learning award. Some clubs and organizations at Lake Highlands High School have a community service component. Hours do not have to be completed in connection with a school organization in order to earn credit for Service Learning Award.

14 Testing Information- Required for Graduation STAAR EOC = State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness End of Course Exams Students must take and pass 5 end-of-course (EOC) assessments as they complete the corresponding course: English 1 English 2 Algebra 1 Biology U.S. History

15 Additional Tests PSAT-mid Oct (when taken in 11 th grade this is the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) ACT and SAT: we recommend students begin taking these in the spring of their 11 th grade year. ( AP Exams (taken in May of the year you take the course) ( example: AP Human Geography) TSI ( Texas Success Initiative) required for FREE Dual Credit enrollment. You can sign up to take this at Richland.

20 What is Bullying? What Does it Look Like??? A single significant act or a pattern of acts by one or more students directed at another student that exploits an imbalance of power. It involves written or verbal expression, expression through electronic means, or physical conduct (which occurs in situations over which the school has jurisdiction) and Has the effect or will have the effect of physically harming a student, damaging a student s property, or placing a student in reasonable fear of harm to the student s person or of damage to the student s property; Is sufficiently severe, persistent or pervasive enough that the action or threat creates an intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment for a student; Materially and substantially disrupts the educational process or the orderly operation of a classroom or school; or (iv) infringes on the rights of the victim at school; and includes cyberbullying.

21 If YOU are being bullied: 1. Make sure you are safe. 2. Tell a trusted adult Staff Member, teacher, administrator, counselor. 3. Do not wait to report.

23 How do I log on to Naviance Family Connection? https: //connection.naviance.com/lhigh Username: your first initial, last initial and student id number ( example jb123456) Password: The Standard Password is your birthdate with no leading zeros including the forward slashes. ( Example April 8, 1996 would be 4/8/1998) You can change it by selecting the Manage my Account link in the upper right hand corner of the screen. If that password does not work, click forgot my password to have a new password sent to your g.risd.org account. DO NOT use the I need to register link. 1. Login 2. Select the About Me Tab 3. Select Profile, in the Official Things Box 4. In June, You will be able to Scroll Down and your GPA will be listed in the academic information section 5. My GPA ( based on a weighted 100 point scale)
