6 Course Levels: Westside offers several class levels to meet the needs of our diverse student population. Preparatory (Prep) These classes will prepare your child for graduation. These courses cover STAAR and State learning objectives. We call these courses prep because they PREPARE the student for grade 13 be it college or the work force. Pre Advanced Placement (Pre AP) These classes are designed to prepare students for the rigors of the AP course. Enrollment in Pre AP is not required to enroll in AP course, but it is very beneficial. Students also earn a quality point in these classes. Advanced Placement (AP) AP courses teach students skills that can lead to success in college. Students will develop the writing skills, problem solving techniques, and study habits that will prepare him/her for college academics. Plus, taking rigorous AP courses demonstrates a student s maturity, willingness to push him/herself intellectually, and commitment to academic excellence, which can help him/her stand out in the college admissions process. Students can also earn college credit based on AP Exam scores. Pre Advanced Placement Gifted and Talented (GT) Westside offers Neighborhood Vanguard (GT) Pre AP and AP courses. At the 9 th grade level, these courses are GT PAP English 1, GT PAP Geometry, GT PAP Biology, and GT Pre AP World Geography. A student is required to enroll in all four GT PAP/AP courses. These courses differ from the traditional PAP/AP courses in speed and in depth of material. A student must be classified as HISD GT to enroll in these courses. Keep in mind that these courses may require more of a time commitment. A GT identified student is not required to enroll in these courses. Auditions, Try Outs, etc: Organization Try outs?
