ODYSSEY FAMILIES NEEDED TO HOST STUDENTS FROM GREECE Dear Odyssey Families, We are very excited to announce a new student exchange program initiative between Odyssey Charter High School and Pierce College High School in Athens, Greece. This coming spring will mark the start of this program, when the first group of students will arrive from Greece to visit Odyssey Charter School and to be hosted by Odyssey families. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and their families to engage in a direct intercultural experience, and to build relationships that have been known to last a lifetime. The students will be arriving on Friday, April 26, 2019 (at the tail end of spring break) and will be leaving to return to Greece on Friday, May 3, We are expecting 20 students (15 girls and 5 boys). We would like to see the girls hosted with families with daughters and the boys with families with sons. If you are interested in hosting a visiting student this coming spring, please your interest as soon as possible to Dr Marina Mattheoudakis. (marina.mattheoudakis@odyssey.k12.de.us) Thank you, Dr. Marina Mattheoudakis Dean of the Greek Program
Get Started on Your Journey to a Successful College Career! Information Session What is dual enrollment? Dual enrollment is a great opportunity to get a head start on college by taking college-level courses that meet both high school and college requirements. Who participates in dual enrollment? Eligible juniors and seniors can gain early access to college courses and earn credits while still in high school. Students taking dual enrollment courses can earn high school and college credits. Where are dual enrollment courses held? Course offerings may include courses on site at the high school, courses at one of Delaware Tech s campus locations, and/or online courses. Why take dual enrollment courses? Students who participate in dual enrollment earn valuable credits toward completing an associate degree at Delaware Tech and can continue on to complete a bachelor s degree with our partner institutions. They can take college courses that apply to high school requirements during hours that they are already in school. By completing a degree sooner, students can save money in the long run. To learn more about dual enrollment at your school, attend a Dual Enrollment Info Session (parents welcome) at: Odyssey Charter School High School Campus Wednesday, February 27 at 6 p.m
Delaware Technical Community College Dual Enrollment Opportunities Odyssey Charter High School will be continuing our partnership with Delaware Technical Community College by offering dual enrollment opportunities for the school year for 11 th and 12 th grade students. Dual enrollment allows high school students to take college-level courses at their high school. Students earn both high school and college credits by passing the course. In an effort to explain this process and what it entails, we will be hosting an information session for parents and students on Wednesday, February 27 th at 6:00 pm in the high school lobby. This information session is for dual enrollment ONLY, and is open to our current 10 th and 11 th grade students and families. If your student has any interest in taking a dual enrollment course, it is highly recommended that you and your student attend. Representatives from Delaware Technical Community College will be here to introduce dual enrollment, what it looks like, and what will be required from the student and family. Please arrive on time. They have a lot of information to provide and we would like to start promptly at 6:00 pm. To ensure that we have enough space and materials, please use the link below to RSVP to the event: If you have any questions about this session, please reach out to Lauren Hindsley Upper/High School Counselor at x 508 or Lauren.Hindsley@odyssey.k12.de.us

Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece, Harvard University, High School Summer Program 2019 A unique opportunity for an Odyssey Charter School senior high school student The High School Summer Program (HSSP) run by the Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece, Harvard University, is an innovative program in English for talented high school students with a passion for learning and a desire to excel. Thanks to the communications between the past Chair of OCS, Dimitris Dandolos, and the Program s Director and Lecturer at Harvard's Committee on Degrees in Social Studies and Assistant Director of Curricular Development, CHS DC, Nicolas Prevelakis, the HSSP last summer launched a new collaboration with the Odyssey Charter School, offering a slot to an OCS high school student. For a second consecutive year, OCS students will be eligible to apply and a student will be selected by the Evaluation Committee of the High School Summer Program to travel to Nafplio, Greece and participate in the Program. An OCS teacher will also be selected by OCS to accompany the student. The teacher will be at times allowed to attend the seminar without, however, being actively involved in student discussions or assignments. The accompanying teacher will be given full access to the Harvard s online resources through the Digital Library of the Center and will thus have the opportunity to use this facility for their own professional development. Any OCS teacher who has an active interest in History, Philosophy, or related issues regardless of the subject(s) they are teaching, is encouraged to apply. Barley Mill Plaza 4319 Lancaster Pike Wilmington, DE T: F:
The Center for Hellenic Studies, Harvard University offers the scholarship for the student s participation in the Program, while Odyssey Charter School will cover transportation, accommodation, and breakfast for both the student and the accompanying teacher. The Center for Hellenic Studies also offers a light lunch every day during the program. For more information please contact the Dean of the Greek Program, Dr Marina Mattheoudakis (Marina.Mattheoudakis@odyssey.k12.de.us). Structure and Content of the Program The HSSP starts on July 11 th and ends on July 26 th, It is designed and implemented by the Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece in collaboration with the Committee on Degrees in Social Studies, Harvard University Faculty, and is supported by the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, Harvard University. The seminars are based on course offered by the Committee on Degrees in Social Studies. Five Teaching Fellows, students at Harvard University, will teach under the supervision of Harvard Faculty. It will introduce students to the foundations of the social sciences and will cover such topics as the different types of human societies, the factors that lead to social change, the relationship between morality and politics, and the role of nationalism, ethnicity, and religion in today s world. Each day will consist of 3 hours of class in the morning, followed by 3-4 hours of activities, lectures, and study sessions in the afternoon. The students will have the opportunity to experience an American college-level course, relying heavily on student participation, class discussion, writing assignments, independent research, and public presentations. They will engage in a mixture of challenging activities, projects, field surveys, teleconferences, presentations, a volunteer activity, simulation games, and a conference. Online sessions with Harvard scholars will be held occasionally. Moreover, the students will Barley Mill Plaza 4319 Lancaster Pike Wilmington, DE T: F:
develop a research project, which they will present at the program s closing event. While working on their assignments, students also have the opportunity to access Harvard s online resources through the Digital Library of the Center. Participation in the High School Summer Program of Harvard University CHS can be a life changing opportunity for an OCS high school student this summer. The participant will be studying and reflecting upon historical and philosophical topics while living in the country where Philosophy and History were born. We are sure that this will be a challenging, exciting and mind broadening experience! Barley Mill Plaza 4319 Lancaster Pike Wilmington, DE T: F:
