As the first day of school approaches I get more excited to see students walking the halls of this wonderful facility. Enclosed in this packet is some very important information. Please read all of it to help you understand what your part is in the first days of school. Teachers and staff have worked very hard this summer to plan for an education that will meet our mission of Preparing Students to Lead Extraordinary Lives. What we will do this year and every year at GPHS is to take each student s skills and talents and develop them to an extraordinary level. This commitment to build extraordinary people we do not take lightly. With great facilities, committed teachers and outstanding technology you will see an excellent education for all students. I would like to thank each of you for showing the commitment to support the creation of this school by enrolling your student at Glacier Peak High School. 2 August Registration Check-In Even though students pre-registered for classes in the spring, it is crucial for parents/guardians to confirm their child s registration. Every August incoming students are given the opportunity to pay for their Yearbooks and ASB cards, purchase pictures and turn in important information before school starts in September. With the opening of Glacier Peak, it will also be the first chance for students and parents to see the new school. Registration check-in has been scheduled for August 25 and 26. The schedule is as follows: August 25 August 26 12:00pm - 3:00pm OR 4:00pm - 7:00pm All Juniors (A-Z) and Sophomores last names (A K) 12:00pm - 3:00pm OR 4:00pm - 7:00pm All Freshman (A-Z) and Sophomores last names (L Z) If you are unable to make the registration check-in dates or new to the Snohomish School District and have not filled out the registration packet... Please call our Registrar, Cheryl Mendenhall, at If we do not receive notification of intended enrollment, your child could be in jeopardy of losing his/her class schedule. Please complete the Health History and Volunteer forms included in this newsletter and bring to August Registration check-in. There will be two classroom sessions and one on-street driving day each week for each eight week session. Classes at SHS will be offered on Monday and Wednesday from 2:30pm to 4:30pm Classes at GPHS will be on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:45pm to 4:45pm. On-street driving classes will be held after school on non-classroom days or on Saturday. The fee for the TSE class is $ and because of the lack of state funding there is no reduced fee or scholarships for low-income students available. Students must be at least 15 years old when signing up for the class. Each student will be issued a waiver to receive a learner s permit without taking the DOL written exam. Fall quarter registration forms will be available beginning August 11 in the SHS and GPHS main offices. The completed registration papers and fee will be accepted at either high school office through September 5 and will be on a first come, first serve basis. 3 Helpful Info Parent Communicating with parents is very important to us so we would like to make our daily bulletins and newsletters available to you through as well as on our web page. During registration check-in you will have the opportunity to check the accuracy of your child s emergency information. If you wish to receive communications by please check to be sure we have your correct address. First Days of School Sophomore Orientation on Tuesday, September 2 from 10:30am to 2:22pm. Lunch will be provided. There will be no District transportation on this day. Freshman Orientation with the Link Team on Wednesday, September 3. District transportation will pick up and drop students off at the regular starting time (7:40am) and school will be dismissed at 2:22pm. School will start for all students on Thursday, September 4 at 7:40am. All students will report to their 1st period classes to receive new copies of their schedules. Lists of 1st period classes will be posted on the office windows and in the Commons. GPHS Pavers Grizzly Gear School Supplies Transportation Student bus routes will be published in the Snohomish School District School Views newsletter the latter part of August. After August 28, 2008, this information will also be available on the Snohomish School District web site at and through your school building secretary. For additional information please contact the transportation department at or at transportation@sno.wednet.edu. In general, students will need to bring the following for the first day of classes: A three ring binder Lined paper Blue or black ink pen A pencil with an eraser Gym clothes and shoes if enrolled in a gym class Student agendas will be supplied by GPHS which will include the bell schedule, calendar, student guidelines and other helpful information. Spirit wear will be for sale during registration check-in on August 25th and 26th. For additional information please visit our website at GPHS fund raising engraved pavers are available. With a future location inside the building between the Gym and the Auditorium, each 4 x 8 x 1 1/2 paver can be engraved with up to four lines with a maximum of twenty characters per line. All engraving will be done in capital letters and will cost $ per paver. 4 Student Parking GPHS has several designated student parking lots with 24 hour camera surveillance. Parking permits will be available during August Registration Check-In. Students who wish to purchase parking permits need to see Ms. Lipinski to obtain the Student Parking Rules and Registration form. Students must be able to show a valid driver s licence and have completed the bottom portion of the form. The parking pass is $45.00 unless purchased prior to September 6th as part of the savings package. After August Registration Check-In, passes will be available from Ms. Lipinski in the main office. Lunch Tickets Lunches are $2.50 with breakfasts available at $1.25. Milk alone is 50 cents. Checks should be made out to the Snohomish School District. Students who are eligible for free or reduced breakfast/lunches can pick up an eligibility form in the Commons during August Check-In, in the GPHS main office or at the District Office. Students who were on the program last year have thirty days after school starts to turn in new forms before being excluded from the program. Parents can access information regarding their child s lunch status through Family Access. Family Access Family Access is a web based program that enables parents and students to access information about student s grades, attendance, course work, lunch status and other pertinent information. Parents will be able to use the same log on and password they received last year. Log on and password information can be obtained from Cheryl Mendenhall, registrar at GPHS at There may be portions of the site which will not be available until school starts in September. Pictures Pictures will be taken of all GPHS students for ID, yearbook, and student records at NO CHARGE. For those students unable to make the August registration check-in, picture make ups will be available on September 17 and the final retakes will be on October 23. Picture packet information will be mailed home separately by the photography company for those parents who wish to purchase pictures. Dress Code Parent Volunteers GPHS strives to promote a positive learning environment and students should come dressed appropriately. Shorts or skirts should be no shorter than the tips of the fingers when the arms are extended on both sides. Clothing with logos that promote drugs, alcohol, sex, gangs, violence or put-downs will not be allowed as well as bare midriffs, low cut pants and low cut tops. Hats, hoods or other head coverings are also prohibited from being worn in the classroom or in the offices. The Parent Organization is instrumental in coordinating many of the activities that take place at school. The parent volunteer form is included in this packet with a variety of activities with which we could use your help starting with our August registration check-in on the 25th and 26th.
