6 Why are you here? To better understand the upcoming registration process. To know what courses will best prepare your student for the future. (ACT, ASVAB,SAT, College and/or workforce readiness) To know how GPA and college entrance exam scores affect you financially (scholarships). To understand how all students benefit from career tech courses. To understand college credit, AP, and Dual Enrollment courses.

7 Parents Role in Planning Help your child develop a plan. Current 8, 9, & 10 th grade students have already completed a four-year plan in the AL Career Planning System (Kuder). All students have access to this system. Visit the College & Career Center. Open to students Monday-Thursday during school hours and for parents by appointment. Evening appointments are available if needed.

8 What is your student s plan? Four choices after high school: Attend a 2 year college (technical degree or transfer) Attend a 4 year college Join the military Go to work Let s talk! Always have a plan A and a plan B!

15 What courses will best prepare your student for the future? The best way to prepare for college entrance exams and for college is by taking challenging courses in high school! Pre-AP, Dual Enrollment, AP Career Tech Match courses to your student s interests and aptitudes (based on Kuder, Plan, Explore, ACT, ASVAB)

16 As you are selecting courses for next year, please keep this in mind: A higher grade point average is NOT always as important as the LEVEL of courses completed. Colleges and universities have told us time and time again that RIGOR of coursework is very important as they determine admission status. A 3.5 (weighted) GPA is the benchmark for scholarships.

18 What is AP? What is Advanced Placement? Standardized Curriculum College Level Rigor Awards College Credit Nationally-Normed Test Compares Globally AP test is required at the end of the course. Students will not be allowed to drop an AP course. Some AP courses require a 2 semester commitment. GPA receives weighted credit.

25 Benefits of Career Tech There is global demand for employees that can think critically, solve problems, work as a team, be creative/innovative, and display professionalism. Career Tech classes provide project based learning, leadership opportunities, and career exploration. Career Tech courses benefit students who are college bound as well as those who will join the workforce or military service after high school. Students can earn dual enrollment credit.

29 What is the ACT? The ACT is a national college admissions test consisting of subject tests in English, Math, Reading, Science and Writing. ACT results are accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. The ACT includes 215 multiple choice questions and an essay and takes just over 4 hours to complete. Includes a career exploration component that assists with planning and relates personal characteristics to career options.

32 ACT Preparation The best way to prepare for the ACT is by taking challenging classes in high school! Study! Even before you take the test for the first time. There are free practice booklets in guidance. Websites (SAT) (ACT) (ACT) At a minimum, visit the ACT website and explore sample questions and test taking tips. There are several ACT apps for iphone and Android that can help you prepare. FREE ACT Prep on April 12th

33 Registration Timeline: Mid-February through March Students will receive materials one week prior to starting registration. Parents should review the materials with their student and sign the forms as needed. Students will meet with a counselor during first block to review graduation requirements and course selections. In April, students will receive a course verification sheet to review to make sure their selections are correct. This is the last chance to change your selections.

34 Opportunity vs. Obligation Do you think about harder classes as an obligation or an opportunity? Your efforts in high school will DIRECTLY affect your opportunities and plans after high school!
