A General Parent meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Cafeteria and will be followed by class visits. Please have your student fill out his or her schedule on the flyer sent home with students. The only college conference of its type in the Sacramento region, College Sunday brings the area's leading college consultants, counselors, and admissions experts together to provide upto-date information and answer detailed questions on all aspects of the college application process. Cost is per individual attendee - $25 for early registration and $30 after. Join the fun at San Juan Education Foundation's annual Evening with the STARS event on Saturday, September 23, 2017 from 5-9:00 p.m. Registration will start at 4:45 p.m. at Rio American High School's new Performing Arts Center. Guests will be transported by bus to nearby Ashton Park for a reception featuring food, wine and beer, and live entertainment by the best performing arts groups in SJUSD. Buses will return guests to Rio for the live auction by David Sobon Auctions, an event program featuring interviews of STARS Hall of Fame honorees by Rob Stewart of KVIE, and a concert by Grammy-nominated musician and 2017 honoree Craig Chaquico. The schedule for the day will be as follows: 1:30-3:30pm - HBCU (Historically Black College and Universities) Recruitment Fair College representatives will be conducting onthe-spot interviews and admissions, as well as awarding scholarships to select students. 6 5-5:45pm - Motivational Speaker Kevin Bracy ( will be presenting in the new Performing Arts Center 6-8pm - College Night Colleges and universities, trade schools, and the military will be in the large gym and the cafeteria...waiting to share information with you about their programs! A preliminary list of colleges is here... In addition, five seminars featuring local experts will take place around campus. These include: * Navigating the College Path * The College Application, Personal Statement and Essay * Community College: A Great Place to Start * Financial Aid 101 * NCAA: Initial Eligibility for the College Bound and Transfer Athlete Bus transportation (leaving about 12:15pm and returning at about 7:30pm) is available. See the counseling office for permission slips and more information. Food trucks will be on site at Rio later in the afternoon too! First XC Meet Complete Freshman Aidan Andriessen is approaching a short hill at the 2K mark of the race. The first cross country meet, Oakmont Invitational, was held last week. The 25 new runners experienced their first meet. Even though it s early in the season almost every returning runner posted a personal record on the 4000 Meter, 2.5 mile course. Sophomore Alex Anaya crossed the finish line almost 6 minutes faster than last year! All in all, a great start for the Matador harriers. The next meet is the Nike Invitational in Concord on Saturday, September 16 th. The full schedule can be found on our web page, Mira Loma Cross Country. 6/10

7 MLHS Cross Country & Track Chipotle Fundraiser Mon, Sep 18th Get your appetite ready. MLHS Cross Country & Track is holding a Chipotle fundraiser on Monday, Sep 18th from 3-8pm. The location is 5040 Auburn Blvd Sacramento % of sales go to MLHS Track Please PRINT THIS FLYER or grab one (from front office) or tell the cashier before ordering that you are there to support Mira Loma Track!! The Senior Year Your senior year will be another busy one! If needed, now is the time to register for any entrance exams you still need to take. This is also the time to secure your Letters of Recommendation. You should have narrowed down your list of top schools and should plan campus tours, where possible. Keep in mind you can also see virtual campus tours online. This is a great time to set reminders for important deadlines. 7/10

8 Search local and national financial aid sources and complete the FAFSA form which you can find at: fafsa.ed.gov. You should begin filling this out by October 1. Complete any early college applications. Be sure you have noted all college application deadlines relative to your schools of interest, including any early action deadlines. Submit all completed college applications by deadlines. Have test scores sent to the schools on your short list. Draft your essays and personal insight questions and start finalizing. Tip save copies of all the forms, documents, etc that you are sending out. Start practicing for school interviews. Check prospective schools received your materials. Compare any financial aid packages. Ensure final transcripts are sent to your chosen school. These requests are made through Naviance. BOOSTERS The Booster Club is a non-profit organization established to support the various extracurricular activities offered by Mira Loma to their students. In addition to supporting student activities, the Booster Club is committed to the beautification of Mira Loma through improvement and maintenance efforts. Additionally, The Booster Club has weekly Bingo in support of Mira Loma sports and clubs, your efforts raise over $12,000 annually for our programs through bingo worker volunteers, additionally Boosters supports and organizes our Safe and Sober Grad Night (overnight) Parties. 9 at Mira Loma High School. The ISSPO supports the educational and service activities of our IS students through personal example, advocacy, fundraising and financial support. ISSPO helps fund books, materials and field trips costs which otherwise would be passed along to parents. You and your International Studies Student and Parent Organization can have an important and positive impact on your child s enjoyment of these years. This parent group helps sustain the finest college preparatory program in the Sacramento region. This excellence does not come without cost. The IB program has many needs beyond those of the typical high school program. The State of California and the San Juan Unified School District do not fully fund Mira Loma's IB program.
