1 Northshore School District No. 417 Fall Annual School Performance Report Mission ment: Our mission is to improve the teaching in every classroom in support of high achievement for every student. Woodin is an energetic learning community that prides itself on meeting the needs of the children we serve. We are committed to partnering with families to provide the best educational experience. The richness and diversity of our surrounding community is reflected in the faces of the students who fill our classrooms. This diversity of incomes, languages and cultures is the strength of the Woodin family. We have created a responsive learning community that recognizes and nurtures the academic potential of every child. Woodin offers a K-6 English instructional program and a K-6 Spanish/English dual language program. Our teachers have high expectations and work diligently to ensure that every student achieves at high levels. We care deeply about our students and provide differentiated learning opportunities. As principal, my favorite place to be is in the classroom connecting with students and observing teachers as they create purposeful learning communities. Our hard working, experienced staff is dedicated to continuous professional growth in order to deliver best instructional practices to students. We dedicate staff meetings to professional development, conduct professional studies and attend district and regional trainings. We collaborate regularly around student learning and quality instruction. In 20 we focused on math, the instructional framework and the Common Core Standards. In addition to focusing on academic development, we place a strong emphasis on responsible citizenship. We have high expectations for respectful student behavior and provide instruction for students that need additional support in this area. This emphasis ensures Woodin is a safe and caring place. Students, staff and parents all share responsibility for the learning process. Parent involvement and support are critical to our success. Our PTA boasts strong membership and excellent leadership. 2 Assessments Northshore School District administers the Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) for grades 3 8, the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) for grades 9 12 and End-of-Course (EOC) exams to students annually in compliance with state and federal laws. The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) develops or selects and administers all state assessments. It also reports achievement data for students, schools, districts and the state. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) is a federal education law passed in 2001 that requires all states to create their own high standards for reading and math and that all students meet proficiency on these state standards by Washington received a federal waiver from NCLB requirements for two years, but recently lost the waiver. As a result, NCLB requirements now apply and Washington schools must meet the 100% student proficiency requirement by Northshore School District has not made AYP for two consecutive years in reading and is now in Step 1 of improvement. The district will implement the following measures to continue to support increased student achievement: consult with parents and staff in developing a two-year District Improvement Plan, reserve 10 percent of its annual federal Title 1 funds for professional development for Title 1 schools and continue to provide assistance to schools identified as in need of improvement. Northshore School District did not meet AYP proficiency goal requirements in the following cells: All, reading, grades 3-5; Asian, reading and math, grades 3-5 and 6-8, math grade 10; Hispanic, reading and math, grades 3-5 and 6-8, math grade 10; White, reading, grades 3-5, and math, grades 3-5, 6-8 and 10; Two or more races, reading and math, grades 3-5 and 6-8, math grade 10; Limited English, reading and math, grades 3-5 and 6-8; Special Education, reading and math, grades and 10; and Low Income, reading and math, grades 3-5, 6-8 and 10. The district did not meet AYP participation goals in the following cells: Black, math, grade 10; Hispanic, math, grade 10; Special Education, math, grade 10; and Low Income, math, grade 10. 3 MSP Test Scores Grade 3 Grade 4 Grade 5 Grade 6 School Improvement Plan Reading Math Writing Science Woodin staff members collaboratively analyzed student work to determine goals and prioritize the school's shared work. Our primary focus was on math and the new Common Core Standards with time also devoted to reading and writing. Teachers were provided professional development in the areas of math and the instructional framework. Our School Improvement Plan was a continuous process. Teachers worked together collaboratively to analyze student work, determine student s strengths and areas for growth, and planned instruction in response to the identified needs. They set short-term improvement goals using common classroom-based assessments to gauge progress. Goals were revisited multiple times throughout the school year in order to monitor and adjust plans. Instruction and assessment took place simultaneously. This process gave us the best opportunity to improve achievement across the entire school as it allowed us the flexibility to adapt to the needs of our students.

4 Dual Language Program What is Dual Language? Dual Language is a bilingual education program that integrates Spanish speaking and English speaking students for instruction in and through two languages. Literacy and content area instruction is provided in both languages to all students. Dual language programs are also known as two-way immersion, twoway bilingual, bilingual immersion and dual-language immersion. Dual Language Program Fundamental Goals: Attainment of challenging, age-appropriate academic skills and knowledge Advanced levels of functional proficiency in English and Spanish Understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural differences The Benefits of Knowing Two Languages: Educational: Students are capable of achieving high levels of proficiency in a second language without detrimental effects to their primary language development. Cognitive: Bilingual students perform better on tasks that call for divergent thinking, pattern recognition and problem solving. Bilingual students also have advanced levels of linguistic awareness. Socio-cultural: Proficiency in two languages permits individuals to expand their world. Economic: Bilingual students have enhanced employment opportunities.

5 Parent Involvement We believe that a collaborative team of caring adults provides our students with the support base they need to be successful. We invite parents and community members to join the PTA, volunteer as tutors, assist in the library and on the playground or share specific talents or expertise as part of classroom or after-school instruction. We are always seeking new opportunities and partnerships with our community. A sampling of current programs is listed below. This list is ever growing and changing. We welcome involvement and input from our community to meet emerging needs. Join the Woodin community! Facility Information was built in 1970 on 9.5 acres. The two-story school contains 26 classrooms that are all in daily use for students. The school underwent a full modernization in 1990 that included new carpets, new paint and a new roof. In 1997, the school s heating system was renovated and the main office area was remodeled in the spring/summer of Many local community groups including youth sports leagues and the YMCA use our school s fields and gym on evenings and weekends for special events.
