12 Credit Advancement The county has applied for permission to use two different computer based programs to allow students to get ahead in core course work. These courses will not be free and will be offered as part of summer programming.

13 Athletic/Extracurricular Eligibility In order to be enrolled in ANY athletic course or to play any sport, or to participate in any extracurricular club, students must earn four core credits per year, and have a 2.0 GPA in the four core classes plus 2 electives. Core classes are math, science, history and English. One class passed = one credit earned.

17 GPA Clarification 2 Classes with the honors or pre-ap designation (including 8 th grade algebra) have a.5 added. In other words, a typical C is worth 2 points on the GPA scale. A C in 8 th grade algebra (or honors algebra at the high school) would be worth 2.5. A student making a C in regular algebra would earn 2 points toward GPA. The only elective this applies to is Spanish 1,2, & 3.

18 GPA Clarification 3 AP classes automatically get that.5 GPA bonus. When a student enrolled in an AP course takes the national AP exam in May, he or she receives an additional.5 bonus for testing regardless of the test score. For example, Jon makes a C in AP world history (2.5). When Jon takes the test, his GPA will reflect a 3.0 for that course.

19 Transferring Credit 1 Algebra 1 and Spanish 1 are the two credits you may choose to transfer to the high school. You also have the right to decline to transfer those credits. Please let the registrar (Mrs. Richardson) and Ms. Brewton know in May if you are declining credit. Our Spanish teachers HIGHLY recommend leaving the Spanish credit at the middle school so Spanish 1 can be retaken with a teacher at the high school.

20 Transferring Credit 2 Most students bring their algebra 1 credit with them to the high school. Those students will take honors geometry in ninth grade. If your student has a C in 8 th grade algebra, I strongly recommend you have them refuse the middle school credit and take honors algebra at the high school. For one thing, I don t think it is good to start high school with a 2.0 GPA. Secondly, it is imperative that the algebra foundation is strong enough to carry them through algebra 2 at the least. A C in 8 th grade algebra suggests that there may be math learning gaps that need to be addressed.

22 Speaking of INOW Please make sure you have your password saved somewhere over the summer. We have a huge number of students and parents who forget the password over the summer (understandable), and the only thing we can do is reset it, which requires the parent coming up to the school to do that (county policy).
