If you are the parent of a 6 th grade special education student, please plan to attend a special event at 5:30 p.m. in the Centennial library. This special event will help students and parents with the transition from elementary school to middle school. Families will begin the evening with a meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the library, then you will proceed to the gym at 6:30 p.m. for the evening event. 4 Spring Parent Teacher Conferences Please see flyer on page 5 of this newsletter for important information about parent teacher conferences. Snohomish High School Freshman Orientation Night. Please see more information on page 6 of this newsletter. Safety At Centennial Middle School This month, we practiced our evacuation drill. When we evacuate the school for a fire drill, for example, students meet their Patriot Period teacher on the football field at a designated yard marker. This is our first evacuation for second semester. It was a good time to review with students especially if their location on the field changed due to a change in 2 nd period second semester. If you have any safety questions or concerns, please contact Amanda Coté at Extra Academic Support We are excited to announce an additional opportunity for students to receive academic help here at Centennial. On selected Fridays, one of our para educators will work with students in the library. Students are welcome to stay after school on these Fridays to get academic help, if they need it. The Help Room will be open on 3/16 and 3/23 from 12:15 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. Students should bring work with them. Students will have access to laptops for school purposes. Students will need a ride home after 2:15 p.m. buses do not run a second time. Community fliers link: Information about National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) To qualify for the National Junior Honor Society students must have earned a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher. To be part of NJHS, they will need to: Complete the application and turn it in to Mrs. Strickland by Friday, March 2. Complete at least 4 hours of community service. A minimum of one hour must be completed at CMS. Community service hours must be completed by Monday, May 15. Maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher. 8th grade students who were part of NJHS last year do not need to reapply this year, but they are required to complete their 4 hours of community service. If students have questions, they can see Mrs. Strickland in room 121. Centennial Sports Track, our season 4 sport, begins on March 26, Sign ups will start on March 5, Please plan ahead. Your student will need a sports physical and a completed athletic packet on file with the main office before they are eligible to participate in practices and games. You can log on to the website and see the most accurate and up to date information for schedules, scores and standings for your team. Rescheduled and cancelled game information will also be posted on the website. Bus drivers needed The district s Transportation Department is seeking substitute school bus drivers. We offer competitive wages ($ $23.25/hour) and free training for Class B CDL endorsement. The class lasts approximately 3 ½ weeks, and the commercial drivers license training is free. Interested applicants need one of the three following items: BA or AA from a college or university; 72 quarter or 48 semester college credits; or successfully pass the para pro test with a score of 461. 6 Incoming Freshman Orientation Night The staff of Snohomish High School invites all incoming Freshmen and their parents to a special evening on Tuesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. Incoming Freshmen will meet in the Auxiliary Gym where they will participate in an assembly designed to welcome them to SHS and introduce them to some of our traditions. While students are in the gym, parents will meet in the Performing Arts Center for a session with counselors, administrators and teachers to learn more about high school planning and the course selection process. These sessions will last about thirty minutes, and parents and students will reunite in the Main Gym at a curriculum fair where parents and incoming freshmen can interact with teachers and current students to learn more about our programs. GO PANTHERS! Science Olympiad Competition Science Olympiad is an American team competition in which students compete in 'events' pertaining to various scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Over 7,300 middle school and high school teams from 50 U.S. states compete each year. There are multiple levels of competition: invitational, regional, state, and national. Winners receive several kinds of awards from medals to trophies and plaques. On February 23, 2018 our Science Olympiad teams competed at the University of Washington placing 5 th out of 13 teams. Here are some outstanding performances: 1 st place in Microbe Mission: Alexandra Strobel and Diana Edinger 2 nd place for Batter Buggy: Alex Ojala and Thaddeus Ojala 2 nd place Optics: Athena Munguia and Jessica Caviness 2 nd place for Electric Airplane: Edwin Westernin and Kaci McCall 3 rd place for Electric Airplane: Adrian Olivas-Hermosillo and Felix Westernin 3 rd place for Anatomy and Physiology: Amy Hastings and Grady VerHoeven 4 th place for Towers: Caiden Bird and Genevieve Prouty 4 th place for Ecology: Dravus Royce and Alexandra Strobel 4 th place for Fast Facts: Diana Edinger and Amy Hastings Our team was coached by Lori Strickland and volunteer, Bill Ginder.
