5 HOW IS COLLEGE CREDIT EARNED? At the end of course, students take a nationally-standarized exam. Each AP exam is scored using a 5-point scale: 5 Extremely well-qualified 4 Well qualified 3 Qualified 2 Possibly qualified 1 No recommendation The AP Exam score is not part of the AP course grade.

6 HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR AN AP COURSE? AP is open to any student from any background, not just straight-a students, but it may not be right for everyone. AP is the right choice for you if you have a healthy curiosity about a subject and are willing to work hard. PSAT scores are one predictor of success in an AP course. Complete prerequisite courses successfully.

7 WHAT IS A DUAL ENROLLMENT COURSE? College course (sponsored by Broward College) that simultaneously awards college and high school credit. At most high schools, students have to leave campus and travel to Broward College for DE courses. DE teachers must have college-level teaching credentials: Master s degree and 18 graduate credits in field.

10 HOW IS COLLEGE CREDIT EARNED? A passing grade in the course will award you college credit through Broward College. Dual Enrollment credit will transfer to any public college or university offering the state-wide course number. A maximum of 11 college credits can be earned each semester through Dual Enrollment courses.

11 HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR A DUAL ENROLLMENT COURSE? 3.0 unweighted (state) cumulative GPA Qualifying CPT/PERT/SAT/ACT/FCAT score indicating you are collegeready. Already earned 11 high school credits.

12 COMMON PERKS (AP & DE) Florida public college students are required to do one summer term unless they enter with at least 9 college credits earned. More quickly move into upper-level coursework, pursue a double major, and maybe study abroad. More likely to complete bachelor s degree in 4 years. Satisfy the Gordon rule: Writing & Math Save MONEY! Earn college credit in a high school environment.

13 IMPACT ON GPA Honors courses earn 1 extra quality point in the weighted GPA A = 5 B = 4 C = 3 AP & DE courses earn 2 extra quality points in the weighted GPA A = 6 B = 5 C = 4 Extra quality points in the GPA is a local reward for successful achievement in an accelerated course. NOT A PRIMARY REASON FOR SELECTING THE COURSE.

14 WHICH IS BETTER? AP OR DE? The decision of which program is better is an individual one made with consideration of your post-secondary plan and your overall course load, in consultation with your teachers and guidance counselor. Some considerations: AP may be best for students considering competitive out-of-state Universities because they are based on a national standard. DE credits are guaranteed to transfer to colleges in Florida s public University system. Dual Enrollment credits are the start of your college transcript. Which courses do Florida public colleges and Universities prefer?

15 HOW MANY DE / AP COURSES SHOULD I SELECT? Let good sense be your guide. Take the number of advanced courses you think you can handle. General rule-of-thumb: 1 course per number of years in high school. Remember that AP & DE courses are more demanding. Maintain an A / B average. Don t fall into the trap of thinking that more is always better.

16 QUANTUM LEAP & HONORS PROGRAM? The Honors program & Quantum Leap program are Advanced Academic programs designed to prepare students for a progressively rigorous curriculum, including Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses.

18 WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE HONORS PROGRAM AND THE QUANTUM LEAP PROGRAM? Except for the Advanced Placement Human Geography, the 9 th grade Advanced Academic courses are the same. Students are TEAMED (grouped) with either the Honors or Quantum Leap cohort. Quantum Leap students take a LEAP by taking their first AP course in the 9 th grade. Honors students can choose their first AP course in the 10 th grade.

19 WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT? Consider (or reconsider) your course selections for next year. Continue your conversations with teachers. See your guidance counselor if you need to make adjustments in your course selections.

20 CAN I CHANGE MY MIND AFTER A COUPLE OF WEEKS IN AN ADVANCED ACADEMIC COURSE? Schedule changes are difficult after the start of the school year. If your placement in a course is inappropriate, we will work with you to make adjustments in your schedule. Considerable planning will help to avoid a schedule conflict in the Fall as much as possible.
