5 IF YOU ARE APPLYING TO AN ACADEMY OR IB You will be scheduled as an IRHS student right now When you are accepted into IB or an Academy your information will be transferred to the appropriate high school Remember if you go to an academy or IB and then decide you want to come back to IRHS, you will not be eligible for sports for one year. If you want to go to the Governor s School for the Arts in Norfolk next year, that application deadline was December 14, but you can still contact them to see if there is space available to apply.

16 INDIAN RIVER HIGH SCHOOL 4X4 block schedule Students take 4 classes each semester. Each class meets 90 minutes a block everyday. Students take a total of 8 classes per year.

22 NEW GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS The next slide shows the graduation requirements for students who are in their first year of high school during the school year and those students who are in 8 th grade this year. Note that if you have a high school student currently in 10 th 12 th grades, the graduation requirements are different.

24 DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS ALL students will have to take Economics and Personal Finance in 11 th grade. Part of this class will be online. All rising 9 th graders will have to take a CPR component in 9 th grade PE to graduate. All current 9 th and 8 th graders have to take and pass and AP or honor class or pass an Industry Credential (IC) Certification test before graduating. All students will take the IC test called the W!SE in their junior year with the Economics class

26 SCHEDULING How is my student going to pick classes for next year?
27 SCHEDULING PROCESS When Mr. Cohen meets with 8 th graders at their home middle schools, they will be given a scheduling booklet to bring home (GMS on Jan. 14 and IRMS on Jan. 17) By February 11 8 th graders pick classes with their teachers and parents Parents will sign off on classes chosen Late February IRHS reviews course requests and enters them into the computer
28 SCHEDULING PROCESS Late February/Early March IRHS mails course request letters home March 8 deadline for parents to make course request changes by returning the course request letters with changes noted Schedules will be entered and then verified for IEP compliance over the summer. Schedules changes may be necessary after verification if hours of service require modification to fit the high school model.
29 SCHEDULING PROCESS If you have questions about scheduling once classes have been picked, you can contact Mr. Cohen at At this point, IRHS will follow 8 th grade teachers recommendations
30 SCHEDULING PROCESS March 8 will be the last day to make any changes to course requests for the school year.

36 CHOOSING CLASSES Math Algebra Foundations Algebra I, Honors Geometry, Geometry, Algebra 2 In parts or as one class? We recommend parts for the majority of the students. Straight math classes are only for advanced math students. Designed for students who make A s and B s.
37 CHOOSING CLASSES PE 9 everyone takes Foreign Languages French, Latin, Spanish, German (don t have to take in 9 th grade)
38 CHOOSING CLASSES Quick review All rising 9 th graders should sign up for: English 9, World History 1, Earth Science, Math (1 or 2 classes), PE, and maybe a foreign language That total is 6 or 7 classes Students then pick 1-2 electives

42 COLLEGE AND CAREER PATHWAYS HB 1184 Passed by the 2012 General Assembly An agreement for postsecondary degree attainment with a community college in the Commonwealth Students complete a transfer degree or a one-year Uniform Certificate of General Studies Concurrent with a high school diploma Available using dual enrollment courses and Advanced Placement courses with qualifying exam scores of three or higher.
43 COLLEGE AND CAREER PATHWAYS Mechatronics Certificate Social Sciences Transfer Degree General Studies Certificate If you are interested in these programs, you need to check the box on the scheduling form and complete and return an agreement form to the 8 th grade counselor. You should also read the information in the scheduling booklet and check the box on the scheduling form.
44 MUSIC CLASSES Band, Orchestra,and Chorus at this time are all alternate day classes. Make sure these classes are listed as your #1 elective. Music classes are 1 st block and alternate with PE 9 Music classes are all year but are taken every other day. Don t get confused by the name of the music class. Our music teachers make sure everyone is in the right classes

46 Chesapeake Career Center Programs are free to Chesapeake high school students Bus transportation is provided to and from all 7 Chesapeake high schools Courses are 2.5 hours every day All programs take 1 full year OR 2 full years to complete Must be a junior or senior to attend Free Transportation 2 blocks Full Year 11 th & 12 th grade
47 BENEFITS OF CCC Prepares students for work and college Students can earn Industry Credentials Students can graduate and earn salaries between $25,000-$78,000 per year CCC programs offer real clinical settings Some CCC classes offer the students the chance to earn college credits while in high school Most CCC programs are for juniors and seniors and require that the students spend ½ of the their school day at CCC on Cedar Road.
48 CCC If students are interested in attending CCC in 11 th or 12 th grade, it is important to meet many of their graduation requirements in 9 th and 10 th grades. For more information go to

52 GETTING OUT OF 8 TH GRADE Finish Strong!! We look at your final 8 th grade grades to determine proper placement in classes. And you need a strong background to be successful in high school.

54 PLAYING SPORTS What does my student need to do if he/she wants to play sports in the 9 th grade?
55 ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS FROM MIDDLE TO HIGH SCHOOL Grade Point Average a 2.0 Registered in 4 classes at IRHS **After the first semester in High School, the student must pass 3 of 4 classes and continue a GPA of 2.0 After the second semester, IRHS will take the better of the two GPA; either cumulative or by semester (GPA 2.0)
56 FAILURE TO MEET THE ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS The athletic director, academic advisor, and coaches work together in assuring your child meeting the Chesapeake Public Schools standards for high school participation. (GPA 2.0 and pass 3 out of 4 classes) If failure to meet the 2.0 GPA requirement should occur, Chesapeake Public Schools offers a one time probation semester of play with a mandatory study hall/tutoring to occur to assist in boosting your child's academic status. Tutoring/Study hall is offered at IRHS right after school and the athlete will report to his/her practice with a pass to be excused from the time missed at practice. If a student s sport is not in season, there is a bus that will provide transportation to your neighborhood.
57 GENERAL ATHLETIC INFORMATION Each middle school will be visited later in the Spring to provide the rising Freshmen with pertinent information on athletics. Indian River High School s athletic website will provide upcoming information on practice schedules and coaches contact information. Your child must have a current VHSL physical on file at Indian River High School dated after May 1, 2019, in order to participate in any activities for the year.
58 ATHLETICS High Schools in Chesapeake Public Schools have 3 seasons of activities which vary from the middle school level. They are as follows
