A Coaches Guide to Navigating the New NCA Ineligible??!! How the (hell) did that happen? Kim Durand University of Washington Gary Hyatt Central Washington University Daniel Scheid Seattle University
Session Outline Introductions NCAA and II Standards Case Study Other options Two Year Colleges II NAIA How High School Coaches Can Help Additional Resources Questions & Open Discussion
NCAA Initial Eligibility Case Study - Joe is being recruited by Ocean Pacific University s Football coaches He has completed 16 core courses with a core course GPA of His ACT sum was 78 He completed 11 core courses before he started his senior year, 8 of which were in English, Math or Science Joe is deemed a Final Non-Qualifier by the Eligibility Center.how the (hell) did that happen?!?
16 core course requirement 4 years English 3 years Math (Algebra 1 or higher) 2 years Science 1 year Additional English, Math or Science 2 years Social Science 4 years Additional Core
Test Scores (ACT/SAT) SAT -Critical Reading and Math sections ACT - English, Math, Reading and Science sections Best sub-score from each section is used to determine the sum for initial eligibility All attempts before initial full-time collegiate enrollment may be used
Core Course GPA Only core courses that appear on the high school s list of NCAA approved core courses count toward the required 16 Students must present a corresponding test score and core-course GPA on the sliding scale Core course GPA is calculated using the best grades in the 16 core courses
Abbreviated Sliding Scale The full sliding scale can be found at eligibilitycenter.org under Resources.
Core-Curriculum Time Limitation Must graduate on time (4 years after the start of Grade 9) Allowed to take one core course after graduation -three with an approved Education Impacting Disability
Effective August Students will receive one of three academic eligibility decisions: 1. Full Qualifier 2. Academic Redshirt 3. Final Non-Qualifier
Full Qualifier -Allowed to practice, receive athletics aid and compete in first academic year Minimum GPA of with corresponding test score
Full Qualifier Prior to the start of the seventh semester, students must complete: At least 10 core courses 7 of which must be in English, Math and/or Science These courses become locked-in
Academic Redshirt -Only allowed to practice and receive athletics aid in first year Can practice during first semester/quarter Must complete 9 semester or 8 quarter hours during first term to continue to practice Cannot travel or compete
Academic Redshirt Prospective student-athletes are not required to complete 10 core courses, including 7 of English, Math and Science, prior to seventh semester Minimum to core GPA with corresponding test score
Non-Qualifier -Not allowed to compete, practice or receive athletics aid during first year in college
I Current Legislation 16 Core Courses 820 SAT 69 ACT (Static) 2.0 GPA Changes occurring Fall 2018
Core Courses I To be eligible to compete at I schools, incoming student-athletes must complete these 16 core courses: 3 years of English 2 years of math (Algebra I or higher) 2 years of natural/physical science (1 year of lab if offered by high school) 3 years of additional English, math or natural/physical science 2 years of social science 4 years of additional courses (from any area above, foreign language or comparative religion/philosophy)
I Grade-point Average Beginning Aug. 1, 2018, you must earn at least a 2.2 GPA in NCAA core courses along with the corresponding required test score to compete in I sports as a college freshman. To be able to practice and receive a scholarship, you must earn at least a 2.0 GPA along with the corresponding required test score in NCAA-approved core courses. Only NCAA-approved core courses will be used in the GPA calculation when determining eligibility. Those courses can be found here. A sliding scale is used to match test scores and core GPAs Current 68 ACT & 820 SAT
NCAA Initial Eligibility Case Study - Joe is being recruited by Ocean Pacific University s men s basketball coaches He has completed 16 core courses with a core course GPA of His ACT sum was 78 He completed 11 core courses before he started his senior year, 8 of which were in English, Math or Science Joe is deemed a Final Non-Qualifier by the Eligibility Center.how the (hell) did that happen?!?
NCAA Initial Eligibility Case Study - Possible reasons: He didn t meet the course specific requirements (4 English, 3 Math, 2 Science, 1 additional Eng-Math-Sci, 2 Social Science, 4 additional core) One of the 16 that he and his counselor thought was a core course had not been approved by the NCAA Didn t graduate on time, repeated a grade Can this be fixed? Most likely.can take one additional core in the summer; get the course approved by the NCAA; file a waiver if there s precedent
Other Options Two Year Colleges 2-4 Transfer Qualifier 1. Spent at least one Full-Time semester or quarter at the 2-year college 2. Transfer GPA of or better 3. Completed an average of 12 semester or quarter hours of transferrabledegree credit acceptable toward a degree program at SU for each Full-Time term of attendance 4. Meet applicable PTD requirements at certifying institution Non-Qualifier 1. Graduated from the 2-year college 2. Completed a minimum of 48 semester or 72 quarter hours of transferrabledegree credit acceptable toward a degree program at SU; including: 6 semester or 8 quarter hours of transferrable English 3 semester or 4 quarter hours of transferrable Math 3 semester or 4 quarter hours of transferrable Natural/Physical Science 3. Attended the 2-year college Full-Time for at least 3 semesters or 4 quarters (excluding summer terms) 4. Minimum transfer GPA of 2.500
Other Options II II Academic Standards II schools provide an integrated environment focusing on academic success while offering a competitive athletics environment. II rules minimize potential conflicts between athletics and academics and focus on regional in-season and conference play. While II schools do not offer athletics scholarships, 75 percent of II student-athletes receive some form of merit or need-based financial aid. If you are planning to attend a II school, you do not need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Division III schools set their own admissions and eligibility standards. You can visit NCAA.org/d3 or contact the II school you are planning to attend.
Other Options NAIA NAIA regulations If you will graduate from a U.S. high school this spring and enroll in college this coming fall, the requirements are simple. An entering freshman must: Be a graduate of an accredited high school or be accepted as a regular student in good standing as defined by the enrolling institution and Meet two of the three following requirements. If as an entering freshman you do not meet at least two of the three standards, you cannot participate in athletics for the first full year of attendance (2 semesters, 3 quarters, or equivalent). 960 SAT Achieve a 2.0 GPA Graduate in top half of your class
Coaches Involvement with Academics Be educated on Admissions Standards & NCAA Initial Eligibility Requirements. Understand 16 core class requirements & the NCAA sliding scale. Know both academic eligibility and amateurism eligibility. Be hands on in following up with your student-athletes regarding academic progress each semester. Emphasize Freshman Senior progression. Ask questions about the admissions process/deadlines. Guard against Senioritis and downward trends. Stress best effort EVERY time your student-athlete takes the SAT/ACT. Call any school s academic or compliance department if you have questions.
