3 7 th Grade Course Offerings Required Classes Mathematics Mathematics 7 (50403/50404) (DOUBLE BLOCKED) Full Year/ Mathematic Credits Students in Mathematics 7 will study mathematics concepts from sixth grade in more depth and extend knowledge to basic pre-algebra by conjecturing, verifying, thinking critically, and applying mathematical concepts. This course focuses on computation and estimation with rational numbers, and emphasized proportional reasoning. Mathematics 7 Honors (50413/50414) (DOUBLE BLOCKED) Full Year/ Mathematic Credit This honors class is for students that excelled in sixth grade Mathematics. Students will be taking a district math placement test in March. Placement will be based on a high test scores and positive teacher recommendations. Language Arts English 7 (40743/40744) (DOUBLE BLOCKED) Full Year/ Language Arts Credits (English, Reading, Grammar, and Vocabulary). These classes focus on effective reading, writing, and communication skills. Students use writing strategies to create several writing projects, including narrative, persuasive papers, and poetry. In the computer lab and using ipads, students are given the opportunity to type essays, use the Internet for research and reinforce learning. As a class we will read the following novels: The Wednesday Wars, The Giver, Out of the Dust, Phineas Gage and The Lightning Thief. We read these novels together to reinforce important active reading strategies. Students are expected to read 700 pages or 800 minutes per term and complete a reading log independently. Career and Technology Education College and Career Awareness (80113/80114) Full Year/ CTE Credit $20.00 Fee Required All 7 th grade students are required to enroll in the College and Career Awareness class at Salem Junior High School. This full year class is separated into four term classes that the student will take throughout the year. Each of these classes provide small exploratory units for the student to experiment and explore to see if their skills and interests match some of the tasks and equipment associated with these areas. Through this experience, students will be better informed as they select elective courses in the coming years. Science Science 7 (32003/32004) Full-year/ Science Credit This class integrates physical, earth and life science concepts. The curriculum includes the following: nature of matter, earth structure, plant and animal cells, levels of organization in living organisms, heredity, adaptations and classification of living organism. This class goes into depth to include many hands on and minds on experiences to help student with development of the content being learned. Utah History Utah History (61003/61004) Full Year/ Social Studies Credit This class is designed to help students become familiar with the geography and people of Utah. The curriculum includes Native Americans, Mountain Men, the Mormon pioneers, statehood and current events. Physical Education Physical Education ( Boys) or ( Girls) Semester/.5 Physical Education Credit This course continues to develop participation skills and techniques in a variety of team and individual games and dance activities with emphasis on leadership, courtesy, respect, and fairness. Elective Classes Fine Arts Band I - Brass (167233/16724) Beginning Band For students with no prior experience playing an instrument. Fundamentals of instrument playing and music literacy are the main curriculum. Students who play larger instruments may rent from the school for $100. Instruments include: tuba, baritone/euphonium, trombone, trumpet, and french horn. Band I - Woodwind (16713/16714) Beginning Band For students with no prior experience playing an instrument. Fundamentals of instrument playing and music literacy are the main curriculum. Students who play larger instruments may rent from the school for $100. Instruments include: flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone (alto and tenor), oboe, and bassoon. Percussion Band I (16833/16834) Beginning Band - Fundamentals of instrument playing and music literacy are the main curriculum. This class requires students to have a bell kit that includes a set of bells, rubber mallets, a drum pad, and drum sticks. Students must also have previous piano experience in order to be in the percussion class.

4 Chorus I Men s Section (16833/16844) Women s Section (18773/18774) This class is designed for students who have never taken choir classes before. This class is an introductory choir course for students who have little to no experience in singing ensemble. Students will learn basic musical skills during daily rehearsals, and are required to participate in 4 concerts through the year (one each term), and 2 school assemblies. Orchestra I (17713/17714) Open to beginning string students interested in learning an instrument for the first time. Viola, cello and bass instruments may be rented from the school for $50.00/year fee. Violins must be rented or purchased from a local music store. Guitar I (18902) Grades 7, 8 and 9 No previous experience required. Learn the fundamentals of guitar playing like reading tablature, chords, written music, strum patterns, and apply them to learn full songs. Guitars are available for rent from the school for $ Classroom set of books provided with $10.00 class fee. Music 7 (Music Connections) (16032) This class is designed to give students a general overview of music through a variety of units. Topics that will be covered include: theory, history, instruments, ear training, film music, world music, and playing recorders. Daily activities will involve anything from writing assignments to listening and moving to music. Art Foundations I (11912) Grades 7, 8 and 9 This class is designed to provide an overview of Visual Arts while studying a broad variety of tools and materials. With an emphasis on studio production, this course is designed to develop higher-level thinking, art-related technology skills, art criticism, art history, and aesthetics. 3-D Art (11942) 3D-Art allows students to explore a variety of different materials and techniques, with focus placed on learning how design principles apply in three dimensions. Students will demonstrate visual communication using subtractive and additive sculpture, relief, architecture, and installation. Students will explore a variety of materials including paper mache, wire, and found objects. Theatre Foundations I (Drama I) (19502) This is a beginning level drama class for students who have never taken drama. This class will cover the basics of drama: focus (how to stay in character), stage directions, pantomime, voice, and technical theatre. Students will be required to participate in a short class play at the end of the semester. Theatre Foundations II (Drama II) (19602) Prerequisite: Theatre Found I (Drama I) This class is for students who have already taken Drama I. In this class, students will increase their acting skills through the study of theatre history, stage combat, storytelling, and scene work. Students will be required to participate in a class play at the end of the semester Career Technology Education Exploring FACS (Intro. to Cooking & Sewing) (84702) Do you love to eat? Do you love to create? Are you looking for a fun, hands-on class? Then this is the class for you. Come learn basic sewing and cooking skills. Create fun sewing projects! Cook and eat delicious foods! Can it get any better than this? Creative Coding (Computer Science Concepts) (85372) In this class you will learn and use coding skills to create a variety of digital projects. We will focus on using computational thinking and problem solving skills to design both individual and group projects. We will also discuss basic computer terminology, careers in computer science, and the principles of acting responsibly and ethically in a digital world. Some of our project will be: To design and create a web page, and to design an application following the app development process. Exploring Technology I/Robotics and Engineering (86302) Exploring Technology I is an action-based course that introduces students to technological systems in: medical technologies; agriculture/biotechnology technologies; energypower technologies; and information and communications technologies. Some activities include: programming robots, computer aided design, wind turbines, solar powered cars and more. Students will explore these systems and their impact on society, through broad exploration in cooperative and individualized activities. The Students will be given multiple opportunities to develop and display problem-solving skills. There is an encouraged $10 project material cost for takehome projects.

5 Language Arts Novels and Literature (44502) WHO likes to READ??? This class will focus on reading books and literature for adolescents. This class will discuss books that YOU like to read. We will look at graphic novels and focus on authors that YOU enjoy. If you have some authors or books that you would think would be a good source of discussion for this class, the teacher wants to know. This class is about you and what you like!!! Foreign Language Introduction to World Languages (47012) This engaging course is for students who are looking for insight into new languages and cultures. Students will be introduced to the basics of the Spanish and German languages, and explore their respective cultures. In this course students are taught the skills and strategies necessary to enjoy learning a foreign language. This course is for students without previous foreign language study. Physical Education Aerobic and Dance Conditioning (72652) Throughout the course students will learn various cardiovascular and body conditioning skills, as well as explore and perform a range of various dance styles and their relation to aerobic fitness. Students will participate in a daily dance/cardio warmup, and specific dance fitness and conditioning skills.
