2 Breda Corcoran Recording Secretary President s Report General Membership Meeting Oct. 22, 2014 Invitation to submit a $150,000 grant application for P.S. 19 students Introduces Story Theater Arts program led by Jake Alrich, in partnership with the Woodlawn Conservancy 3 year program (begins January 2015; concludes June 2017) for up to 100 1st 6th Graders Being invited to apply is a significant accomplishment; it means the foundation is actively interested in funding the program Decision to fund the program will be made prior to the next general membership meeting on November 19. Background check services PTA s responsibilities & the NYC DoE Go Pass system The PS 19 PTA, as it concerns its activities and the extent to which its activities involve contact with or supervision of members and their families, is responsible for determining how its activities are supervised and the extent to which participating individuals are selected, screened, and, as necessary, certified. The PTA will be surveying its members to determine whether it wants to perform background check services and, if so, under what circumstances. A PTA of (Every)one Your PTA s voice in the community In short: be nice. We re all working for the betterment of our school and, while disagreement is expected and in fact welcomed, it s important to we work together and ensure all members feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, and raising concerns, no matter how much we might disagree. Old Business Updates DoE involvement in the PTA s Theater Arts activity Point of Information: Sept. 24 General Membership Meeting Do DoE rules require Jake Alrich to be registered, background searched, and certified by the NYC DoE when performing his duties in support of the Theater Arts activity during PTA NIGHTS? Response: This actually raised a larger question surrounding all PTA activities that involved children. In the general sense: under what circumstances can the DoE compel the PTA perform a background search on anyone? Examples include: Bake Sale volunteers Holiday Boutique volunteers Field Day volunteers 8th grade dance volunteers Hiring a face-painter for a fall (or spring) festival Hiring a contractor to coordinate a PTA NIGHTS activity As an independent non-profit association, the PS 19 PTA governs itself; it operates under its own tax ID, elects its leadership independent of DoE interference, and is allowed to freely enter into agreements with local community partners, unpaid and paid, member and non-member, as it deems fit and necessary in the furtherance of its mission. In short, the PS 19 PTA, as it concerns its activities and the extent to which its activities involve contact with or supervision of members and their families, is responsible for determining how its activities are supervised and the extent to which participating individuals are selected, screened, and, as necessary, certified. The NYC DoE does not have direct input into this process. In a similar fashion, to the extent that PTA members may assist the school with its activities (e.g. Field Day, 8th grade dance), the school determines how participating individuals are likewise selected, screened, and certified. The PTA has no input into this process. Last year's bake sales figures Point of Information: Sept. 24 General Membership Meeting The review of bake sales for the 2013/14 school year incorrectly listed the expenses as $0.00. Response: The reviewed the PTA s expenses for the 2013/14 school year and could not identify any expenses related to the conduct of its bake sales. While it may be reasonable to assume that there was an expense of some kind, the lack of documentation makes it impossible to determine if an expense was incurred and, if so, how much. Review of last year's budget The review of last year s budget is complete. It is maintained in the PTA s records at the school and is available to any member for review, by request.

The projected register was Process of hiring a school aide to replace Mrs. DeBrino (retired). Funds to come from the school s budget. 3. ELL program using Title III funds early morning program for targeted English Language Learners. 4. Parent Engagement Tuesday afternoons 2:35pm 3:15pm. Make appointment with teacher if you need to conference with them about your child s progress. 5. Halloween Parade on Friday, Oct. 31 st weather permitting (no make-up day). 6. Picture Day Tuesday, November 18 th. 7. Parent/Teacher conferences Thursday, Nov.13 th (afternoon and evening). 8. Open School Week - November 17 th 21 st. 9. Scholastic Book Fair - November 10 th 14 th. 10. Election - Day November 4 th. No school for students. Staff Professional Development Day. 11. Veterans Day November 11 th School closed. 12. Specialized High School prep classes end on Thursday, Oct. 23 rd. The Specialized High School Exam is scheduled for Saturday, Oct 25 th and Sunday Oct. 26 th. It is a one day exam. TACHS exam scheduled for Friday, Nov. 7 th. 13. School Construction Authority architects met with Mr. Sullivan to discuss possible addition to PS 19. The planning is in the very early stages but Mr. Sullivan is hopeful that the project may get approved in the near future.
5 Breda Corcoran Recording Secretary 1st SLT Meeting held on 9/29/14 at 3pm. SLT Report General Membership Meeting October 22, 2014 We elected Principal Sullivan as our Chairperson and Mrs. Brown as our Recorder. Future meetings were established for the calendar year and posted on the PTA bulletin board. Mr. Sullivan reviewed the NYC School Survey Report with the team. One goal is to have 10 parent workshops this year. The CEP and Budget were reviewed. Last day of school is 6/26/15. Projected Graduation dates, 6/22, 6/23. 2nd SLT Meeting was 10/15/14 at 3pm. The Team reviewed the Learning Environment Survey Report which are the responses of Parents, Students, 6th, 7th and 8th graders, plus our Teachers. One area of need is our children are still feeling bullied at our school. Mr. Sullivan asked Mrs. Estrada to assist with the coordination of workshops to help our children and families with this issue. Thanks to Councilman Andrew Cohen for the $20,000 CASA grant for our children to have the Bronx Arts and Music return this year! Next SLT Meeting is 11/12/14.
