Landgraf, Principal PARKVIEW MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Parkview Elementary School is to provide a quality educational environment that recognizes and meets the unique academic, social, emotional, and physical needs of the individual elementary student, while encouraging a positive self-image and responsible citizenship. We announced this on Facebook about a month ago, but want to ensure all parents know how proud we are to be nominated by the Illinois State Board of Education for this award. Parkview has been nominated as an Exemplary High Performing School. Additionally, Parkview is one of 16 outstanding public schools nominated from Illinois for the National Blue Ribbon Schools award this year. This nomination is a result of the successful performance on PARCC testing by our students. An examination of our school report card shows Parkview students improving on the PARCC assessments each year with 67% of students meeting and exceeding standards in Parkview s well rounded and ever improving curriculum, explicit instruction, positive and caring climate for students and staff, and families that are engaged and active in education are what has allowed Parkview to achieve status as an Exemplary High Performing School. Parkview Elementary School is definitely an excellent school and worthy of the National Blue Ribbon School nomination and consideration. Parkview has a hard-working, dedicated, and caring staff of professionals in all positions within our school building. Effective shared leadership and collaboration among the Parkview staff, coupled with family engagement in education, provides a culture for learning and a caring climate for students. Staff, students, parents and the entire school district share in this honor. I also want to thank our Parkview staff that participated with the application process. It was a total team effort. We look forward to receiving the results of this application in August. Stay tuned!!!

2 PARENT/CHILD BREAKFAST Save the date and mark your calendars! Parkview Elementary School will be hosting a Parent/Child Breakfast before school on Thursday, April 12. This will be an opportunity for parents to come in and eat breakfast with their children prior to school beginning. Mornings are always hectic in most households. This is a great opportunity to relax, spend time with your child, and celebrate spring as we near the end of another school year. Return the flyer attached to the end of this newsletter with payment by April 3 to RSVP. DENTAL EXAMS- 2 nd Grade State law mandates that all second grade students are required to have a complete dental examination. Each 2 nd grade student needs to present proof, on the appropriate form, of having been examined before May 15, Acceptable dental visits can be any dental visit within 18 months prior to the May 15 th deadline. Forms may be downloaded from the Parkview website or picked up in the school office. Please contact the nurse, Amy Poole, if you have any questions. 4 TH GRADE PARENT NIGHT AT COLUMBIA MIDDLE SCHOOL Current 4 th grade parents are invited to attend the upcoming Parent Night at Columbia Middle School for all incoming parents of next year s 5 th graders. The event will be on Thursday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m. and will run for about one hour. This night is designed to introduce CMS to our new parents. We will review what daily life is like for 5 th graders and will have an expert panel of current 5 th graders that will answer questions. After that, you will be free to walk the 5 th grade hallways to get a feel for the building. As a reminder, this presentation is geared for parents only. KINDERGARTEN SCREENING REMINDER Eagleview Elementary held our Kindergarten screenings in March. If you have a child that will be 5 before September 1, 2018, and have not had your child screened, please contact the Eagleview office at to schedule an appointment. SCHOOL SUPPLY KITS Parkview Elementary will be offering parents of next year s 2 nd, 3 rd, and 4 th grade classes the opportunity to pre-purchase their child s school supplies for the school year. Taking advantage of this opportunity will save you the time of going to different locations to find all your child s school supplies. Each kit will come packaged in a carrying case and will include all necessary supplies for your student s grade level. Flyers will be coming home in the next few weeks; all orders and payments must be processed on line only. Parkview s school ID is PAR203. Kits will be available for pick up at parent orientatation Please contact the Parkview Office if you have any questions. SPRING PICTURES Spring pictures are Monday, March 26. All students will be photographed and parents will have the opportunity to purchase prints that will be sent home in mid April. Please complete the tear off section of the flyer where you select the background for your student s photo. This form should be given to the photographer on March 26. 2

3 Payment will not need to be made until you receive the portrait package, After you view the portrait package, you may send payment (in the form of a check) into school with a completed form, OR you can order on line. If you do not wish to purchase any photos, you will need to return the packet to school or you will be billed for the photos. SUMMER CAMPS Time to start planning for summer! Flyers are starting to go home with students for the many different camps being offered this summer both in the Columbia School District as well as by various outside organizations. Please check your student s Friday folders and watch for flyers posted on the district web page under flyers. There are deadline dates to each camp that ensures your student will receive a camp t-shirt the week of the camp. Camp registration forms need to be completed and turned back in with payment to each respective school by the deadlines listed for each camp. Thank you, and if you have any questions please direct those to the coach directing the camp. 4 PTA EVENTS *Keep up to date with all PTA news by following Columbia PTA in Fb! * Trivia Night 2018 was a huge success! For the first time ever, we sold out The Falls with 52 tables. We had over 100 items in our silent auction and 10 great rounds of Trivia with a costume contest, 50/50 drawing, Heads & Tails game and much more! PTA s trivia night makes enough money for the PTA to host ALL of our other activities throughout the school year! Those activities include: Fall Festival, Christmas Craft Night, Rollerskating, 5th&6th Luau, 8th grade graduation dance, staff appreciation, Senior scholarships, Teacher Grants and our annual school grant! THANK YOU to all who attended, sponsored and helped at Trivia Night! We are happy to report we made just over $25,000. *Keep clipping those Box Tops now and over the summer! We will do a collection again in September! This school year we met our goal with EV & PV each collecting over $1000 in Box Tops! *Last PTA meeting of the school year will be April The Falls at 7pm! Please join us!!! COLUMBIA PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS LEGO Club (Kids), 03/20 & 04/17, 4-5 p.m. In LEGO club, kids can free build or try out our LEGO challenge cards. STEAM Explorers: Worm Series (Ages 6-12), 04/03, 04/10, 05/01, 05/08, 4-5 p.m. Get down and dirty by investigating the anatomy, habitat, and overall life of worms! Special program by University of Illinois Extension's 4-H Youth program. **Call to register. SPRING BOOK FAIR The Parkview Library will host a spring book fair on April 24 & April 26. This is a BOGO event, buy one book get one free, and will be held only at Parkview after school gets out on Tuesday and Thursday from 3pm to 7pm. All books and items will be Buy One Get One Free!! Mark your calendars! BASEBALL TICKET OPPORTUNITY Check out the flyer at the end of the newsletter for an opportunity to attend a Cardinal Baseball game on April 7 with other Columbia residents. The Columbia Baseball team earns a percentage of the profits of ticket sales if purchased through Coach O Donnell. The ticket price is 4

Landgraf, Principal Parkview Parent/Child Breakfast Parkview Elementary School will be hosting a parent/child breakfast before school on Thursday, April 12. This will be an opportunity for parents to come in and eat breakfast with their children prior to school beginning. Mornings are always hectic in most households. This is a great opportunity to relax, spend time with your child, and celebrate spring as we near the end of another school year. The menu will consist of pancakes, egg, sausage, and milk. The price for each meal will be $4.00. Breakfast will be served from 7:00 a.m. until 7:45 a.m. The goal is to have everyone finished eating and in class by 8:00 a.m. Parents can walk their child to class upon finishing breakfast in the morning. Due to expecting a large crowd of parents on this day and needing an accurate count for food, anyone that would like to purchase breakfast must pre-pay by Tuesday, April 3. With spring break upcoming, that will give us just a couple school days to have food ready for the morning of the 12 th. Unfortunately, we will be unable to accept same day walk-ups. Payment may be made by check (payable to Parkview) or cash. Return the completed portion with payment to the Parkview office by April 3.
