11 SCHOOL SPORT AUSTRALIA exists to provide quality educational opportunities through sport for Australian school communities. School Sport NT philosophy is to cater specifically for the talents of all year old students from school communities throughout the NT urban, rural and remote, in an appropriately tiered educative sporting program. Guiding principles: - School Sport NT programs, through their regional bodies, actively provide opportunities for all NT students regardless of location, gender, ethnic or socio economic background and for both able-bodied students and students with a disability. - School Sport NT offers opportunities for competition in a variety of sports in which sporting ideals of fairness, honesty and integrity are central to the code of practice for players, all officials and spectators. - School Sport NT engenders friendliness, fun, enjoyment and a sense of achievement for all participants as an integral part of each sporting competition - As a consequence of the School Sport NT program, students participate successfully in comprehensive educational programs and sport activities to Respect and understanding of self and other cultures Social maturity and national identity Health and fitness lifestyle practices Personal sporting skills and knowledge An appreciation of Australia s sporting ethics Development of career opportunities - School Sport NT provides alternative sporting pathways for students to develop skills and experiences through tiered competitions - Recognition that School Sport NT needs to provide additional support to service the needs of its rural and remote members - All officials operate in accordance with accepted quality-coaching practices, styles and legal and ethical responsibilities Darwin Region Cross Country Team

12 Aussie Rules Football (AFL) - for boys and girls 12 and under and 15 and under boys Basketball - for boys and girls 12/13 and under Netball for girls only 12/13 and under and 16 and under Tennis - for boys and girls 12/13 and under Football (Soccer) - for boys and girls 12/13 and under Rugby League - for boys and girls 12 and under; for boys 15 and under Track and Field (Athletics) - for boys and girls aged years Cross Country years Touch - for boys and girls 12/13 Cricket - for Boys and girls 12/13 and under and 16 and under Swimming - for boys and girls aged years Students from your school who make a representative team: Once a student has been selected into a Region team a squad pack of information will be given to students. SSNT Permission Forms will need to be completed and signed by the principal. These will be part of the pack. You may wish to acknowledge their achievement in the school newsletter and/or assembly etc. Team managers may ask for assistance in ensuring all permission forms have been signed and handed back you may have to do some chasing up. Make sure teachers of those students involved are aware of when they will be away for competition. Please note: Because students are at a school event, they are not classed as absent on the roll. So even though they are not at school, please mark them as present. SAMS has a special code to use check your roll/school. Billeting: As of billeting is no longer applicable for School Sport Championship events. Instead teams will either camp or be accommodated at a suitable venue, such as a school or bunk house style accommodation, organised by the hosting region and SSNT. This will increase the cost for all students attending the event if they are travelling. Parents who are attending the event are encouraged to accommodate their children with them. They will be offered a reimbursement for this. Incident Follow-up: Students who do not adhere to schools rules are not eligible to participate in Darwin Region Teams. Any student who displays unacceptable behaviour during any Darwin Region event will be excluded from further participation for the remainder of the year. Schools will also be expected to follow up on any incidents. 10

13 All Team Officials are volunteers with a variety of experience and backgrounds. Teachers, teacher assistants, parents, senior students, in fact anyone can be an official if they meet the requirements set out by Darwin Region (ie. Ochre cards etc.) We need TEACHERS!!!! It is a requirement that every team has at least 1 teacher per team. This is for duty of care reasons and is a ruling from School Sport Australia. SO we need YOU to encourage your teachers (and Principal) to become involved in this wonderful and rewarding program! Emergency Relief Teaching funding is available to cover teacher or school staff absences. For most sports, each team usually has a coach and manager looking after the team. For a more specific break down of each role please refer to the Team Official Handbook. At the end of every year the CMB advertises for coaches and managers for each sport that will be run the following year. Interested persons need to fill out an application form stating any interests, qualifications and experience and have this application signed by their principal. The CMB then meets to allocate the best suited volunteers for each position which will help determine how many teams Darwin Region will nominate. A letter will be sent out to all applicants to inform them of the outcome of their application. In that letter information about a compulsory training session is given. The compulsory training session gives all team officials the opportunity to meet with each other and be informed of everyone s roles and responsibilities. Any questions can be clarified and any additional/important information will be relayed at these sessions. If you are a successful applicant, a letter will also be sent to your principal. 15 SCHOOL SPORT NT Codes of behaviour Players Code of Behaviour Be a good sport. Play for enjoyment. Strive for personal excellence Work hard for your team as well as yourself. Treat all team mates and opponents as you enjoy being treated yourself. Play by the rules. Cooperate with team and game officials. Control your behaviour on and off the field. Learn to value honest effort, skilled performance and improvement. Inappropriate Behavior Examples of inappropriate behaviour that is unacceptable includes: Having or consuming alcohol Having or using other illegal drugs or substances Smoking Sexual activities Sexual harassment Vandalism or other criminal offences Swearing or abusing others Physical violence towards others Harassment or vilification of others Violating the School Sport Australia Student Accommodation Policy Violating team curfews Refusing to comply with instructions Poor sportsmanship or cheating Team Managements Code of Behavior Set a good example for your players. Encourage and create opportunities to develop individual skills. Teach a wide range of team skills. Ensure that the sport is appropriate for the age group and the skill development level of the players involved. Teach your players to be friendly towards officials and opponents. Give all interested students a chance to participate in training and in games. Remove from the field of play any of your players whose behaviour is not acceptable. Keep your own knowledge of coaching and the developments of the game up to date. Support School Sport Australia s policy of a smoke and alcohol free environment. No tour official of the opposite gender should enter the team change rooms until all team members have completed changing. It is most unwise for any team official to be in a situation where the official is alone with a team member without the knowledge of the team management. Parents Code of Behaviour Encourage participation by your children. Provide a model of good sportsmanship for your child to copy. Be courteous in your communication with players, team officials, game officials and sport administrators. Encourage honest effort, skilled performance and team loyalty. Make any new parents feel welcome on all occasions. Do not interfere with the conduct of any events. Support School Sport Australia s policy of a smoke and alcohol free environment. Spectators Code of Behaviour Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour. Remember children play for enjoyment. Don t let your behaviour detract from their enjoyment. Let game officials conduct events without interference. Support skilled performances and team play with generous applause. Demonstrate respect for opposing players and their supporters. Support School Sport Australia s policy of a smoke and alcohol free environment Administrators and Officials Code of Behaviour Ensure rules, equipment, training schedules and games are safe and match the needs and skill level of the children involved. Ensure that equal opportunities for participation in sports are available for all children. Involve children in planning, evaluation and decision making. Ensure everyone involved, including parents, understand their responsibilities regarding fair play and appropriate behaviour. Encourage a positive attitude towards children s sport I) emphasise fun and enjoyment ii) encourage both teams iii) set a good example iv) encourage the pursuit of personal excellence Be consistent, courteous and helpful toward all participants. Use common sense to ensure that the spirit of the game for children is not lost by overcalling violations. Ensure that adequate supervision is provided by qualified and competent coaches and officials capable of developing appropriate sports behaviour and skill technique, and that these officials are given the opportunity to improve their coaching and officiating. Remember that children play for enjoyment, downplay the importance of rewards. Avoid allowing children s sports programs to become primarily spectator entertainment. Focus on the needs of the participants rather than the enjoyment of the spectators. Distribute a Code of Behaviour sheet to spectators, officials, parents, coaches, players and the media, and take other positive steps to ensure people understand their responsibilities regarding fair play in children s sport. Support School Sport Australia s policy of a smoke and alcohol free environment Media Code of Behaviour Provide coverage of children s sport as well as reporting adult sport. Be aware of the difference between adult s sports programs and children s sports programs. Children are not miniature professionals and adults should not place unfair expectations upon them. Place in proper perspective the isolated incidents of unsportsmanlike behaviour rather than make such incidents the highlight of the event. Focus upon children s fair play and their honest effort. Identify and report on the benefits of children participating in sport. Be aware of the difference between the goals of amateur sports and those of professional sports. Make the readers, viewers and listeners aware of these differences. Make it clear that the professional is an entertainer and wage earner and this, on occasions, may be reflected in the professional athlete s behaviour. Appendix 1
