3 Superintendent/Principal Welcome It is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to the entire school community as we all prepare for the start of another school year. Our summer has been a busy one. Adam Yoshioka, our high school English and Spanish teacher, took a position with the Spokane School District in July. We have lined up Cheri Exner to teach Spanish I and II, and a contract studies class while Roland Thiele will be teaching 7/8 PE, 9 th English, and Creative Writing. Heather Thompson will be taking on some new duties including Volunteer Coordinator, Title I Coordinator, and ASB Advisor. Joel Harvoux was hired as a bus driver and bus dispatcher and Dan Quinnell will be our new bus mechanic. These individuals will be a great addition to our already strong staff. We have many activities already planned and the best place to look for school information is on our web page, We try to have all of our major activities listed on this site. You can find school board meeting dates, athletic schedules, teacher information, breakfast/lunch menus, and much more. The site is managed by Charlie Groth and Amy Kjolseth. Our District Mission Statement is focused on each student achieving their highest potential, and this can only be done if we work together. We welcome your comments and ideas on how we can better serve your child and the community, and I can be contacted at or stemccullough@curlew.wednet.edu. Affirmative Action Statement / Nondiscrimination Statement The Curlew School District affirms that no person, on the basis of sex, national origin, sexual orientation, race, or handicap, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity. Curlew School District #50 complies with all federal and state rules and regulations and does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, age, honorably-discharged veteran or military status, sex, sexual orientation, marital status or qualified individuals with disabilities. This holds true for all students who are interested in participating in educational programs and /or extracurricular school activities. Inquiries regarding compliance and /or grievance procedures may be directed to the school district s Title IX/RCW 28A.604 officer and/or Section 504/ADA coordinator, Steve McCullough. Student Handbook Changes Over the summer we reviewed and made some changes to the student handbook. Most notable is the change that allows hats and other headwear in the classroom at the teacher s discretion, and the change that limits any use of headphones in the classroom to teacher directed activity. Open House Open house will be held in the evening of Monday, September 17 th. We will send a schedule home with your child the week before. Elementary Open House will have staggered start times to allow for you to visit multiple classrooms, and the secondary open house will focus on how you can help your child succeed in school. Open House is not designed for individual student conferences. To set up a conference with your child s teacher please contact the main office or your child s teacher to schedule an appointment. School Board Vacancy We continue to have a vacancy in the school board position vacated by Kim McElheran. Next School Board Meeting Wednesday, Sept. 5 th at 4:00 INJURIES/INSURANCE The safety of our students is one of our most important concerns. Even so, accidents do happen and resulting medical treatment (ambulance transport, surgery, hospitalization, etc.) can be very expensive. Please know that the school district does not assume responsibility for these costs. However, as a service to you and your child, Curlew school has joined with thousands of others by offering you access to a low cost, voluntary purchase student accident/health insurance program. A brochure with enrollment form was provided in your summer packet. If you have any questions, please call Myers-Stevens & (800) VISITOR POLICY THE SAFETY OF STUDENTS IN CURLEW SCHOOL IS OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE. All parents/visitors to the school will be required to check in at the school office. Prior to entering any area of the premises (classrooms, hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, library, playground, etc.) while school is in session, a visitor pass will be issued. Parents/visitors checking students out of school during school hours must do so through the school office. School is considered to be in session 30 minutes prior to classes starting and 30 minutes after the ending of the last regularly scheduled classes of the day. As an added safety measure, elementary exterior (west) doors will be locked at the beginning of class until the end of classes for the school day. Parents/visitors are reminded that school is a weapon free environment. It is a violation of state law for any person to carry a firearm or dangerous weapon on school premises, school-provided transportation or areas of other facilities being used exclusively for school activities. (RCW , RCW 28A ) We are thanking you in advance for your cooperation in assisting us in making Curlew School a safe environment for your children. 5

9 FALL SPORTS HAS BEGUN Fall Sports are under way for most of our fall sports. Junior High Volleyball will begin the second day of school. If you are in grades 6-8 and wish to participate in Cross Country or in volleyball (girls only), or in grades 9-12 and wish to participate in drill team, volleyball, football, or cross country please contact our athletic director Charlie Groth to obtain necessary paperwork and other requirements. Schedules for the high school teams are in this newsletter. These are accurate as of today but changes are sometimes made after the season has started. Please check our website for any changes in sports schedules. They will be listed in the Upcoming Sports section (under Extra-Curricular menu). Full page copies of each high school sport are available at home games. JUNIOR HIGH VOLLEYBALL Practice for the junior high volleyball team begins on the second day of school (Wednesday, September 5). Girls in grades 6, 7, and 8 are eligible to play but must have all their paperwork completed, bought a $35 ASB card (buy in the school office), and have an updated physical on file at the school before they can practice. If you need paperwork you can pick up the packet in the school office Monday through Thursday prior to school starting. SPORTS PHYSICALS At the Republic Medical Clinic Friday, August 31 10am-Noon and 1pm-4pm Cost is $25 First come-first served on a walk-in basis. 9 SPORTS ADMISSION One game adult admission at Curlew is $5 for football or volleyball, $6 for basketball, $2 for junior high basketball. Curlew does not charge for junior high volleyball One game senior citizen admission at Curlew is $3 for football or volleyball, $4 for basketball, $2 for junior high basketball Most schools charge the same prices but there are a few that do charge more so if you are traveling to a game be prepared to pay that schools admission price. We hope again to offer basketball season passes and also an all-year pass. Before we do this however our school ASB must approve the prices. If this does develop the amounts will be posted in the next newsletter as well as in the programs at the fall home events. FOOTBALL ANNOUNCER Curlew athletics is looking for a volunteer football announcer for our home football games. The job would entail announcing the line-ups and then go play-by-play action. If interested please contact coach Dave Devoe ( ) or athletic director Charlie Groth ( ). We are also looking for a backup person to run the football scoreclock. Community volunteer Bruce Wills will be running the score clock when he is available but there are several dates when he will not be available. If you are interested please contact Charlie Groth. ELIGIBILITY TO PLAY SPORTS A reminder to athletes and parents about sports eligibility: To meet WIAA requirements each studentathlete must be passing 6 (six) semester classes. Each of our enrolled students has the opportunity to be enrolled in seven classes but sometimes we have seniors who do not need a full-time load to graduate. Those students sometimes want to schedule less than six classes.which would make them ineligible. Students taking five or fewer classes cannot just enroll during their sport season to bring them up to the six classes..they must be enrolled the entire semester. If they do not meet this WIAA requirement they will be not be able to play sports. WIAA has a large section of their handbook on numerous eligibility issues for athletes. If you have questions about sports eligibility here at Curlew please contact our athletic director Charlie Groth.

12 NOTIFICATION OF RIGHTS UNDER THE FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT (FERPA) The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18 years of age ("eligible students") certain rights with respect to the student"s education records. They are: (1) The right to inspect and review the student"s education records within 45 days of the day the District receives a request for access. Parents or eligible students should submit to the school principal (or appropriate school official) a written request that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect. The principal will make arrangements for access and notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. (2) The right to request the amendment of the student"s education records that the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate or misleading. Parents or eligible students may ask the Curlew School District to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the school principal, clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the District decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the District will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them to their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible student when notified of the right to a hearing. (3) The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student"s education records, except to the extent FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the District as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the School Board; a person or company with whom the District has contracted to perform a special task (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate education interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility. Upon request, the District discloses education records without consent to official of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll. (4) The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the District to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the Office that administers FERPA are: Family Policy Compliance Office U.S. Department of Education 600 Independence Avenue, SW Washington, DC CHILD FIND Curlew Public School District #50 participates in Childfind, which is a nationwide program designed to identify children ages 0-21 that have special learning needs, with an emphasis on preschoolers and early identification. 13 BUSINESS CLASSES AVAILABLE THIS YEAR Our school is offering Microsoft Office classes this year that can certify students in Microsoft Office subjects. This program began for Curlew this past spring. We certified the following students : Devin Poore (Excel), Trenton Wellman (Powerpoint, Word), Amber Terry (Word), and Sean Gillen (Excel). This opportunity is available because of an agreement between our state and Microsoft. Last year (in its first year) 4100 certifications were earned by Washington students. Our state is the second state to work with Microsoft; the first was North Carolina. This is a great opportunity for Curlew students. Any high school student may enroll in Mr. Groth s first through fourth period program classes and take a Microsoft class Students in the Accounting class have an opportunity to earn dual credit. They have an opportunity to earn high school credit and also credit at the Community Colleges of Spokane. Desktop Publishing: Over the past several years this class has been very popular with students. This class does the work for the annual that our school produces and also have opportunities to learn Microsoft Publisher in more detail. Most of the time students are working in Adobe Photoshop on pictures for the annual or taking the pictures for annual use. Digi-pen: Through a grant we are offering an on-line Digi-Pen class again this year. We are limited to seven students though. Interested students should contact Mrs. Grumbach or Mr. Groth for this opportunity. We are looking for one or two students to work on helping developing a community web page. Interested students should contact Mr. Groth for more information. Immunization Exemption Requirements State law requires that before attending school, children must get immunized against certain diseases that vaccines can prevent. Parents and guardians meet this requirement by filling out and turning in a Certificate of Immunization Status, showing their child has the required vaccinations (or that he or she has immunity already because of having the illness). If parents and guardians choose to exempt their child from one or more of the required vaccines, they must fill out a Certificate of Exemption form. The 2011 Washington State Legislature passed a law that changes the process for getting an immunization exemption. All other parts of the law remain the same. The law says that: Parents or guardians who want to exempt their child from school immunization requirements must first talk to a licensed health care provider about the benefits and risks of immunization. The provider must sign the Certificate of Exemption verifying that the parent got this information. A health care provider does not need to sign the form for parents or guardians who show membership in a church or religious body that does not allow medical care from a health care provider. A provider may also write and sign a letter that verifies the same information instead of signing the form. Schools and child cares can accept copies of the exemption form and provider letter. Providers signing the form in good faith won t face legal liability. Beginning July 22, 2011, parents or guardians who want to exempt their child from immunization requirements must fill out and turn in the updated exemption form to their school or child care. Find more information and the form at Skipping vaccinations or missing vaccine doses makes it more likely that your child can catch and spread serious illnesses like whooping cough and measles, which vaccines can prevent. Getting kids all their recommended immunizations protects them, their classmates, friends, and families from preventable diseases. Kids who don t get fully immunized may have to stay home from school, preschool, or child care if a disease outbreak occurs. DiAnne Lundgren RN, Curlew School Nurse NOTE: see page 8 for required vaccines 13

14 Class Fundraisers Need More Parent Leadership. With decreased funding to support class advisor stipends and the increasing academic demands on our teachers, we need more parent help in order to organize and supervise class fundraising activities. The teacher class advisors will still oversee the class meetings that occur during the school day and guide the students through the process of initiating fundraisers that will help each class pay for activities like dances a senior trip. However, these events will not be able to take place without parents to supervise and manage the fundraising events outside of the school day. Classes that do not have parental support for these fundraising events may not end up achieving the funds required to pay for a senior trip. These funds must be acquired by December 1 st of their senior year to ensure a senior trip. While the school board and advisors see the great benefit of the senior trip, we need more help from our parents and community to maintain this worthwhile tradition. Each class will be looking for two lead parents to help direct fundraising. We thank you in advance for your time and consideration in this matter. Contact Heather Thompson if you are interested in taking on this responsibility. COUGAR TIMES Curlew School District P.O.
