Our ribbon cutting ceremony on September 18, 2011 was a tremendous success and we welcomed Senator Lindsay Graham as guest speaker. Our chorus sang under the direction of Carol Adams. On October 1, we held the first pageant at Powdersville High School and it was a wonderful evening. Also under the direction of Carol Adams, fourteen 9 th graders and nine 10 th graders competed for their class crown. At these events, the maturity, talent, and hard work of our students was evident. There is no doubt that our school is blessed with an outstanding group of students. We are looking forward to our next big event, our homecoming football game vs. Woodmont on October 27 at 6:00. We will celebrate spirit week, finish school on Thursday with a pep rally (parents are invited), beat Woodmont, and have a homecoming dance following our victory. I hope parents will feel free to come to these events and support our students. Report cards for the 1 st 9 weeks will be issued on October 27, 2011, and parents will have an opportunity on October 28 to hold parent-teacher conferences. Students who are failing one or more courses will be contacted in order to set up conferences where a plan will be developed to help their student improve. Overall, our goal this year is to see that every student is successful and that 100% of our students are promoted to the next grade level. We feel as a faculty and staff that we can spend the time necessary to help ALL students because we have a small student body. We will do our part as long as parents are willing to help. Finally, in the coming weeks, we will be running a test of our EduLink emergency alert system that is used to contact parents about issues like a school lock down or school closing. The system will use current telephone numbers in our student database. If you need to update phone numbers in order to receive these alerts, please contact our main office at

Grades and Attendance Use this display as a detailed overview to locate any historical and current grades and attendance by class. Grades History Displays all recorded final grades and the individual assignments from the instructor to substantiate that grade. Attendance History - This is a detailed display for the semester by period showing any absences or tardies. Teacher Comments View comments that teachers have entered in PowerTeacher Anderson School District One now has Single Sign-On Access to the Parent Portal. This offers a number of benefits, including access to multiple students with one login, a personalized account for each parent and guardian, and the ability for parents to retrieve their own login information. 3 Page 3 Message from Guidance... As things are starting to settle down, please encourage your students to continue working hard in their classes. Remind them that they are preparing for the rest of their lives and it is important to make everything count! Below are some helpful reminders for students: STUDY EVERY NIGHT! Review your notes whether there is homework assigned or not. Do ALL ASSIGNMENTS on time! Attend class regularly! When you miss days, you miss a lot of important information Remember Students who miss more than 10 unexcused days in a year-long class and more than five unexcused days in a semester class will be denied credit. Only medical notes are considered excused absences. Ask your teachers what their tutoring schedule is and get help from them as needed!!! Remember to NEVER be afraid to ask for help.your counselor, your teachers, your parents, and the administrators are ALL here to help you.just ASK!!!! 5 Page 5 Band News.. The PVHS Marching Band has a lot to be proud of in their inaugural season! The 1 st Competition of the Season at Boiling Springs High School was a very successful day. The Marching Band took 1 st place out of 6 bands in the Class A Division, and the Best Music Score. The drum line also finished 2 nd in Class A. Our 2 nd competition at Berea High School on October 8 th was also very successful. The band finished 2 nd of 7 Class A bands at the contest. The percussion scored 2 nd place and our Overall Effect music and visual scores were 1 st. The band will travel on the 15 th to Palmetto for the last regular season competition, and then on to Upper state Championships on the 22 nd. If the band finishes in the top 6 at Upper state, they will advance to State Finals on the 29 th! Congratulations to this 1 st Marching Band of Powdersville High. 6 Page 6 Attention..Attention...Attention Parents We need Your help! A disturbing trend has been identified over the past 5 years that we as educators need help in combating. When confrontations between students occur on campuses across our nation, whether they be arguments or fights, students are gathering around and using cell phones to video the incident. These videos are circulated from phone to phone, and often are posted on YouTube. Worst of all, students are more interested in recording the confrontation than intervening, alerting an adult, or getting out of the way. In fact, as educators, we see these confrontations lasting longer and getting more and more involved because students are encouraging it and crowding so that teachers cannot get to the situation. We feel like our students should know better than this. We understand that parents want students to have cell phones for safety, but we also believe that parents never intended this use for their children s phones. We will discipline students who are caught videoing confrontations and who are involved in forwarding these confrontations to other phones. If a disruption occurs due to the videoing or forwarding of a confrontation, discipline will include In School Suspension and either confiscation of the cell phone for the remainder of the year, or prohibiting the student from bringing a phone to school for the remainder of the year. Please encourage your student to do the following: 1) If a confrontation is forwarded to your student s phone it would be best for them to alert an adult at school or home. At the very least, the student should immediately delete the video and not forward or post it. 2) If a student is near a confrontation, he or she should NOT get out a phone to video it. It would be even better if you would encourage your student to find and alert an adult to the problem.
