1 Chesapeake Science Point Math Teams Boast Simultaneous Success in Both MS & HS MathCounts Competitions On February 27th, 2016, Chesapeake Science Point (CSP) Public Charter School s middle school math team competed in and won the 2016 MathCounts Annapolis Chapter regional competition. This marks the 8th year in a row that CSP s math team has earned the award for being the first place team at this event. As the middle school team was competing on one side of the Anne Arundel Community College s campus, their high school teammates were extending their lead on the season tally in the AACC High School Math Competition! The Middle School MathCounts program is designed to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics. Today s event, held at the Anne Arundel County Community College is sponsored by the Annapolis Chapter of the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers and is designed for students with a passion for math who are interested in being challenged. The competition consists of four rounds: one with 30 challenging problems to be solved in 40 minutes, one where harder problems are given two at a time with a short time limit, a team round designed for four students to complete 10 problems in 20 minutes and a head-tohead Countdown round where the top students at the event take part in an elimination round fast computation contest.
2 As the results were announced, CSP students earned trophies for being the top team over all, for having the highest individual scoring overall, and for having the first and third place individual in the Countdown round! Eight CSP students earned the right to advance to the Maryland Statewide MathCounts Competition to be held at Johns Hopkins University on March 12th, 2016, where they'll compete with the top students from over 100 Maryland schools that take part in the MathCounts competition program. CSP s top scoring students are: First Place Team: Oumarr Bah, Anagha Sandeep, Isa Liggans and Emily Zhu 1 st Place Individual: Oumarr Bah 5 th Place Individual: Anagha Sandeep 7 th Place Individual: Om Mehta 10 th Place Individual: Zeshan Ahmad 11 th Place Individual: Akash Prasad 11 th Place Individual: Imaad Syed 1 st Place Countdown Round: Oumarr Bah 3 rd Place Countdown Round: Anagha Sandeep Chesapeake Science Point s Middle School Team was well represented at the MathCounts Competition by:

In this competition, students compete in two rounds, an individual round where students have thirty minutes to complete six hard problems, and a team round where a team of five students must work together to complete six more very challenging problems in thirty minutes. A team s top three scoring individual scores are averaged and added to their top scoring team score to create the schools final score for each meet. At this competition, CSP had the honor of having the only individual earning a perfect score on the individual competition, with CSP 11 th grader Anthony Krieger scoring all six questions correct. The CSP team that included Anthony, along with Ryan Budahazy, Benjamin Kelm, David Kravets and Kyle Yamaguchi scored all six questions correct on the team round. This gives Chesapeake Science Point a solid lead on the season tally heading into the final two competitions of the year. After three competitions, the season scores at the AACC High School Math Competition is: 1 st Chesapeake Science Point points

CSP s Math Team practices competitive math in the morning, starting an hour before school. Practice starts every Monday, Tuesday and Friday with their math team teacher coaches: Teachers Mrs. Lyniper Al-Os, Mr. David Hamrum, Mr. Vincent Njong, Mrs. Catherine Smith, Mrs. Imelda Valencia, and Parent Volunteer Mr. Bernie Kelm. This extended team of coaches offers an experience base that enables CSP to provide the math team members with exciting, innovative, and entertaining ways of learning critical thinking and math techniques that helps them not only excel in competitive math but to learn lessons that extends to all aspects of their current studies and life beyond.
