2 Health Infrastructure Health Infrastructure is an important indicator to understand the healthcare delivery provisions and mechanisms in a country. It also signifies the investments and priority accorded to creating the infrastructure in public and private sectors. This section on Health Infrastructure indicators is subdivided into two - educational infrastructure and service infrastructure. Educational infrastructure provides details of medical colleges, students admitted to M.B.B.S. course, post graduate degree/diploma in medical colleges, dental colleges, admissions to BDS & MDS courses, AYUSH institutes, nursing courses and para-medical courses. Service infrastructure in health include details of allopathic hospitals, hospital beds, Indian System of Medicine & Homeopathy hospital, sub centers, PHC, CHC, blood banks, mental hospitals and cancer hospitals. Medical education infrastructures in the country have shown rapid growth during the last 15 years. The country has 242 medical colleges, 205 BDS colleges and 67 MDS colleges ( ). Number of postgraduate degree and diploma awarded in various disciplines of medical sciences by the universities during academic session was 3181 and 1316 respectively. Besides, there are 1779 nursing and Para medical colleges with an intake capacity of 38,306 ( ). There are 5479 hospitals having beds in the country 3753 hospitals are in rural area with beds. Population served per Government Hospital is while population served per Government Hospital Bed is 2834 (2004). Medical care facilities under AYUSH by management status i.e. dispensaries & hospitals estimated during year 2005 were & respectively. There are Sub Centers, Primary Health Centers and 3222 Community Health Centers in the country (2004). India had 855 Government licensed Blood banks and 288 in Voluntary blood banks. Private hospitals has 561 blood banks and other private commercial centers are 473 (2005). 98
