2 IB Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

5 Prospective IB Students Must be self-motivated and demonstrate intellectual curiosity and a strong desire for learning Demonstrate strong academic potential; high academic standing (honours student: 80%-85% minimum average) Must be a competent reader and communicator and possess a broad range of academic and other interests
6 At Glenforest, IB students: Simultaneously complete requirements for both the OSSD and the IB Diploma Programme IB students complete the 2 year MYP programme in grade 9 and 10. Before proceeding into the 2 year DP Programme which begins in grade 11
7 MYP Grade 9 & 10
8 How is the MYP defined? For students ages11to16 8 subject groups, plus the personal project in their final year The MYP in structure and philosophy asks students to: become critical and reflective thinkers and make connections between subjects studied and the real world
9 The MYP is guided by 3 Fundamental concepts: Holistic Learning: Through an interdisciplinary focus of knowledge, students obtain a global viewpoint of real-world issues. Intercultural Awareness: Students experience attitudes, knowledge, concepts and skills not only about their own culture, but also others' social, national and ethnic cultures to develop an intercultural awareness and Communication: Students are able to express and explore their personal development, cultural identity and intercultural understanding.
10 What makes the MYP Different? Integrated Method of Teaching Conceptual and inquiry based education Assessment Criterion related assessment using standardized descriptors Personal Project 14 month research project on a topic of the student s choice
11 Assessing the student Teachers assess according to criteria set for each subject discipline by the IB Assessment Centre
12 MYP at Glenforest in Grade 9 Once students are enrolled in the MYP Programme, they are expected to take the full MYP package of courses. They will be learning from qualified MYP teachers, in the MYP format of teaching.
13 MYP at Glenforest in Grade 9 Students are required to take the following courses in grade 9: Mathematics / Language and Literature/ Science / Individuals and Society / Physical and Health Education/ Language Acquisition (French)+ One Arts course and One Business or Technology course = 8 credits
14 The Personal Project A significant & self-directed project Driven by personal interests & passions Focussed through Global Contexts An opportunity to learn & develop skills attitudes & knowledge Turning skills & beliefs into action
15 Personal Project Timelines Students will choose an inquiry project of their choice and work towards developing one major focus question. Introduction takes place in June in grade 9 Students work over the summer and throughout the grade 10 year. Culminating with a large scale exhibition in April of grade 10 where parents and the community are invited to take part.

18 The IB Diploma Programme Students who successfully complete: the grade 9 & 10 MYP Programme And the Personal Project have the opportunity to enter IB Diploma Programme Students must demonstrate a commitment to the expectations of the IB Programme
19 Diploma Requirements Students select 6 courses to study: SL and HL SL = Standard Level HL = Higher Level Students complete 2 SL courses in grade 11 and SL French and the 3 HL courses in grade 12 Students also complete the Theory ok Knowledge course in Grade 12
20 Diploma Requirements All courses have a final exam in May, which is worth 60%-80% of the final mark Portfolios, commentaries, or projects constitute the remaining percent of final mark All assessments are marked on a level 1-7 scale(each level translates into a percentage range for the Ontario Report Card)

23 Diploma Requirements: The Core Extended Essay Approx. 4,000 word essay - Topic of choice Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) community service over 2 years which is divided between creativity, action and service Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Over the 2 years students explore knowledge claims and in grade 12 complete a TOK essay of words
24 IB Expectations Ontario Expectations Externally marked exam in May and specifically defined internal assessments Courses are assessed in Levels 1-7 and the final mark is determined by IB Course choices are limited but balanced Courses are either 2 or 3 semesters in length allowing in-depth study Liberal Arts Education Final exam or Culminating Activity make up a smaller percentage of the final mark. Courses are assessed in percentages More choices and flexibility Courses are 1 semester long Students are able to concentrate on specific subject areas.
25 IB Diploma University Recognition Most Ontario Universities consider both the IB diploma and the OSSD for admission Some Canadian Universities have specific policies and procedures for assessing IB students Universities outside of Canada may use the IB results as part of their admissions requirements.
26 IB Diploma University Recognition Glenforest IB DP students apply to Universities across Canada and abroad. The Good News is that all of our IB DP students are accepted by the many Universities that they apply to. Many receive scholarships Most importantly they report that they were extremely well prepared for University.
27 Results Students earn Points towards their IB Diploma The max points available are 45 Last year 1 student earned 45 Diploma Points The average IB DP Student at Glenforest earns 35 points The World Average is 29.9

32 All Applications are completed online Refer to the instructions in the handout The Application Screen opens on October Follow the link on the Glenforest website under IB Admissions You will be able to apply to more than one programme in Peel once you create your profile

34 Admission Process Students will be assessed on the following: their grade 7 Final marks and Learning skills, their grade 8 Progress Report and Learning skills and the answer to a Written Question There are 116 available spots (representing 4 classes) for the Grade 9 MYP class of Sept 2014 The top third of the total applicants will be placed in a lottery to determine their space on the list. The top 116 from the lottery will receive an offer and the remaining students will be placed on the waitlist.
35 Application Dates Application deadline: Nov 11, 2014 Feb 2 nd Students will receive all Regional Program offers on this day. All students who applied to the IB Programme at Glenforest S.S. will receive an outlining their status Accepted, Unsuccessful, Waitlisted Waitlisted students may receive an offer in the second round of offers.
36 Offers must be accepted by no later than Feb 6, 2015 by 4:00 pm If students do not accept spots in a Regional Program by Friday Feb. 6, the spots will be offered to students on the waitlist. Regional program schools will send second round offers on Monday Feb. 9, Once students make program decisions, they cannot change their minds and accept spots in different regional programs.
37 Offer acceptance To accept an offer, you will need to reply by the deadline. You will need to reply to the offer you receive. When you confirm program participation, you will be asked to pay your program fees. Directions will be provided. Students will only be officially admitted into the program once program fees are received. Fees will be paid online using a third-party service provider. If you don t have a credit card, fees can be paid in-person with a cheque made payable to the school. All Fees are Non-Refundable
38 Placement All students will be placed in Regional Programs by Feb. 28, Students will know which regional program they will be attending in September 2015 by the end of February.
