8 IB Diploma vs. IB Certificate EARNING A DIPLOMA Obtained by a student earning at least 24 points over the two year program 45 possible points 42 points for subject study (7 pts. per subject) 1 point for Creativity, Action, Service 1 point for Theory of Knowledge 1 point for Extended Essay

9 IB Diploma vs. IB Certificate EARNING AN IB CERTIFICATE Earned by a student who completes an IB course, but not all of the requirements for an IB Diploma

10 The Difference Between AP and IB IB DIPLOMA PROGRAM: AP COURSES: Holistic Program: The IB is a course of study made up of six areas which are studied concurrently. Students also take a class called Theory of Knowledge, write a senior research project (Extended Essay), and complete 150 Creativity, Action and Service hours Cafeteria Style: Students choose AP courses that fit their strengths and that are independent of one another No additional requirements Asks why more than what Asks what more than why Significant accountability for teacher and student Graded world-wide Multiple Assessments: Essays, orals, and projects, performances in addition to the written exam, determine the final score (1-7) Less student and teacher accountability Graded in US Single Assessment: Scores (1-5) Emphasizes process and integration of content across content areas process, application, integration IB students may also sit for AP exams if they choose Content-driven AP students may not sit for IB exams unless enrolled in an IB class

IB students are prepared for academic success Participation in the IB Diploma Programme shows that students have excelled in multiple and diverse academic challenges and is a strong predictor for success in university.* IB students have extensive experience doing independent research and presenting what they have learned through presentations, papers and other projects. IB students are more likely than others to enroll in and graduate from selective higher education institutions.* IB students think critically and draw on diverse perspectives that reflect an international outlook. *IB analysis of data obtained from the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) for students taking examinations in May 2000 and May 2001 and Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) of National Center for Education Statistics.
