1 VIKING NEWSLETTER October 4, 2018 SCHOOL NEWS ARE YOUR CHILD S EYE AND DENTAL EXAMS AT SCHOOL? I have ed several times families who have not handed in their child s eye and/or dental exams here at school. It is MANDATED by the state of Illinois that this paperwork be submitted to the school for the school year. 2 nd grade is required to have dental exams and Kindergarten is required to have dental and eye exams. PLEASE, PLEASE get these to our office ASAP. It is very time consuming following up on these, continually sending out reminders where I would much rather be in the classroom seeing all of the learning going on with the students! I appreciate your following up on this important requirement. Student Council 6 th, 7 th, 8 th graders forms due tomorrow Friday, Oct. 5 th The St. Vincent de Paul Student Council will hold elections on Monday, Oct. 15 th with speeches given on Friday, Oct. 12 th. Student Council members are leaders in the school and are responsible for some wonderful achievements throughout the year. If you would like to be part of a fun and rewarding organization, participate in elections on Monday, Oct. 15 th. Permission slips for those interested have been distributed to the 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th graders, and are attached to this newsletter entitled Student Council Permission Slip. They can also be found on our website at under Student Life, Activities/Programs, and Student Council. These permission forms should be returned to Mr. Dill or your homeroom teacher by, Friday, October 5 th. 8 th Student Ambassadors forms due tomorrow, Fri., Oct. 5 th Sign-ups for 8 th grade student ambassadors have begun. Being a student ambassador is a great chance to develop leadership skills, hone communication skills, and serve the school. This is open to all 8 th graders. See the attachment entitled, Viking Student Ambassadors for more information and the sign-up form. The form can also be found on our website at under Student Life, Activities/Programs, and Student Ambassadors. This form is due to the school office by tomorrow, Friday, October 5 th if your 8 th grader is interested in becoming a student ambassador.

2 October NO School Dates Reminder that there will not be school on the following dates in October: Monday, October 8 th Columbus Day Holiday Tuesday, October 9 th Professional Development Day Picture Re-Take Day Thursday, October 18 th Picture re-takes have been scheduled for Thursday, October 18 th starting at 8:30 AM. These are for students who were absent or not satisfied with the original. Remember picture re-take day is a dress-up day only for those having their picture re-taken. TSS Photography utilizes an exclusive online proofing system. You will be able to proof your child s picture before it is actually printed. Details will be sent to the address you have registered with the school within a week after your picture day. You can also place your order online when you proof your child/ren s pictures. You must go online, view your child s proof, and decide if you would like a re-take by Wednesday, Oct. 17 th 3:00 PM. If you are happy with your child s portrait, you will do nothing. If you would like to request a re-take for any reason, follow the instructions online. There will not be another retake date after October 18 th. ALL PORTRAITS WILL BE PRINTED AFTER RE-TAKE DAY AND THEN MAILED DIRECTLY TO YOUR HOME. Parent Ambassadors Meeting 2018 Tuesday, October 23 rd Would you like to be a Parent Ambassador? Would you like to be able to Spread the good word about St. Vincent de Paul to families outside of our school? Then coming to a meeting on Tuesday, October 23 rd at 7:00 PM is the time to learn about our school and all that goes on here! We know that our parents are our BEST AMBASSADORS to our school and we would like to fill you in on what s going on here so you can get out there and spread the word to interested families! COME JOIN US... Tuesday, October 23 rd, 7:00 PM!! Light snacks will be provided. This meeting is for parents only. Lap babies are welcome! Babysitting is available for any other children up to 5 th grade. Please RSVP to: svdpoffice@svdpvikings.com Please specify how many are coming to the meeting and how many are coming for babysitting with their ages also. Conferences Thursday, November 1 st and Friday, November 2 nd First Quarter report cards will be ed/posted on Friday, October 26 th. Please look for an e- mail that was sent earlier with important conference scheduling information for K-8 th graders. For students in K-5 th grades, conference preference sheets are asked to be returned by Friday, October 12 th. For students in 6 th 8 th grades, the teachers will be at tables in the parish hall. These conferences are considered OPEN and no appointment is needed.

3 Yearbook Pictures If you have taken pictures at any events involving SVdP students and would like to share them with Mrs. Roten for use in the yearbook please them to Please send them anytime throughout the school year until February 28, Thank you. Viking Newsletter dates bimonthly distribution For the school year, the Viking Newsletter will be ed home to all our families every other Thursday. This is to make sure that the information gets home to our parents. The Viking Newsletter which contains important school information is always available on our website and ParentsWeb. The following are the dates to be looking for the Viking Newsletter the first semester: Thursday, Oct. 18 th Thursday, Nov. 1 st Thursday, Nov. 15 th Thursday, Dec. 6 th RELIGIOUS NEWS Power In My Hands Movie Sunday, October 7 th Power In My Hands is a beautiful story of hope and the power of prayer. Join us on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, Sunday, October 7 th at 3:00 PM in the Parish Hall for this incredible film. Saint Parade Wednesday, October 31 st Again this year we will have our Saint Parade on Wednesday, October 31 st at 2:00 PM. Please see the attachment entitled, Saint Parade Guidelines and Resources. All-School Mass Change to Thursday, November 1 st Due to Solemnity of All Saints on Wednesday and no school on Friday, November 2 nd for Parent/Teacher Conferences the all-school Mass day has been changed to Thursday, Nov. 1 st at 9:15 AM. Save the Date 2 nd Grade Parent Sacrament Meeting Tues., Nov. 6 th All 2 nd grade parents should attend an informational sacrament meeting for First Reconciliation and First Communion on Tuesday, November 6 th at 7:00 PM in the parish hall. 8 th Grade Confirmation Sunday, March 3 rd At the request of Bishop Jenky, Confirmation has been scheduled for the 8 th grade students of St. Vincent de Paul Parish on Sunday, March 3rd at 3:30 PM at the Cathedral of St. Mary s of Immaculate Conception.

4 ATHLETIC NEWS Golf- Congratulations to the Golf team members who qualified for the Sectional Golf Tournament held the first week in September. Special congratulations to the 2 boys (Bradley and Cooper) and 1 girl (Sophia) that qualified and participated in the IESA State Golf Tournament two weeks ago. All golf team members who have not turned in their SVdP golf shirts please return them in a plastic bag with your name on it to the school office by Friday, Oct. 12 th. Cross Country- Good Luck to our cross country boys and girls teams as they compete in the Sectional Cross Country Tournament at Donovan Park in Peoria at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 6 th. Good Luck SVdP runners! Girls Basketball- Good luck to our girls team as they continue to dribble their way through their current season. Our 5 th, 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade teams have posted big wins already this season. Good luck to our 8 th grade girls team as they participate in the PND Tournament the weekend of Oct. 12 th and 13 th. The girls teams will host the following games over the next two weeks: Thursday, Oct. 4 th vs. Epiphany (5 th Grade-6 PM, 6 th Grade-7PM) Tuesday, Oct. 9 th vs. Oak Grove (7 th Grade-6 PM, 8 th Grade-7 PM) *Note: 5 th and 6 th grade girls away games at Dunlap Middle School on Thursday, Oct. 11 th will be played at Hickory Grove Elementary School, 2514 W. Hickory Grove Rd, Dunlap, IL instead of at the grade school. Good Luck Girls Basketball players! Go Vikings! Girls Basketball Pack the Gym Night Tuesday, Oct. 30 th Please mark your calendars for Pack the Gym Night for girls basketball which is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 30 th when SVdP takes on St. Thomas. Stay tuned for more details to come on the awesome night planned for our girls. 6 th Grade Boys Basketball Coaches Needed St. Vincent de Paul is currently seeking volunteers to fill an immediate coaching vacancy. We are searching for coaches at the 6 th grade level in our boys basketball program. Ideally, potential coaching candidates would have basketball experience in playing at the college or varsity high school level. Candidates should also have a clear understanding of basketball rules as they apply to the junior high level and exhibit good Christian conduct in helping to develop our student athletes. We are seeking a 3 year commitment of volunteer coaching from our candidates. Interested candidates please contact Chris Schifeling at or at topher@mtco.com.

5 Boys Basketball Open Gyms Open gyms are the next two Saturdays (Oct. 6 th and Oct. 13 th ) prior to the start of the boys basketball season. These open gym opportunities are for any boy in the 5 th - 8 th grade wanting to get some playing in ahead of basketball tryout or practice. Open gyms will be held in the new gym from 8-10 AM each of the next two Saturday mornings. Boys Basketball / Cheerleading sign-ups due Fri. October 12 th Registration for all boys basketball teams and for cheerleading have been opened up online. To sign-up online go to SVdP website at click on the Athletics tab, then Registration tab. Once online registration is completed the only item required to be turned in to the school office is an updated IESA sports physical (if not already turned one in for this year). The athletic fee of $45.00 per sport/per athlete will be billed in your FACTS system and can be paid online if desired or cash/check (payable to SVdP Athletics) paid in the school office. Please sign-up/register your athlete by Friday, October 12 th. Boys Basketball/ Cheerleading Parents Meeting Wed., Oct. 17 th There will be a short parents meeting for those who have signed up for boys basketball and girls cheerleading in the cafeteria on Wednesday, Oct. 17 th at 6:00 PM. Each of the boys basketball coaches will be on hand to give a short review of their goals for the season and some of the changes will be covered as well as the volunteer requirements for the new season. Please make sure that at least one parent attends this meeting. Athletic Pass As a convenience, a family athletic pass is being offered for the school year. This pass will entitle parents and their children admission into all regular season home games for girls basketball, boys basketball, and volleyball. Grandparents are not included. Any tournaments or IESA post-season games hosted at St. Vincent are not included. For those interested please complete the attachment entitled Family Athletic Pass Order Form and submit completed form and $100 (check payable to SVdP Athletics) to the school office. A list of participating families will be present at the admissions table during games for reference/check-in. No cards will be issued. IESA sports physicals required - 7 TH and 8 TH Grade Students ALL students in 7 th and 8 th grades participating in sports must turn in a sport physical prior to the season start date. Boys Basketball & Cheerleading sports physicals must be turned into the school office on or before Monday, Oct. 15 th. All schedules, roster information, pictures, registration and forms can be accessed on the school website at and click on the link to the Athletics website.

6 PEORIA NOTRE DAME NEWS PND 6 th Grade Field Trip Friday, October 12 th The 6 th graders will be attending a field trip to Peoria Notre Dame High School on Friday, October 12 th from 9:30-12:15 PM. Fr. Lucas and PND invited our 6 th graders to attend and participate in PND s All-School Mass. PND Student Ambassadors to visit SVdP Monday, October 15 th PND Student Ambassadors are coming to SVdP to speak to our 8th grade classes regarding student life and enrollment at PND. Our PND visitors will be at SVdP on Monday, Oct. 15 th from 2:30 PM 3:00 PM to talk to the 8 th graders in a small group setting. The 8 th graders will be given a folder with more information and important dates for PND events. 8 th Grade Visit Day Tuesday, October 16 th On Tuesday, October 16 th Peoria Notre Dame High School will host its 8 th Grade Encounter Day for all area 8 th graders from 9:30 AM 11:00 AM. Eighth graders will learn how PND students encounter Jesus Christ throughout our school community and learn more about the faith formation opportunities offered at PND! PND High School s Open House & Information Night Wed., Oct. 24 th Peoria Notre Dame High School is hosting an Open House and Information Night on Wednesday, October 24 th at 6:30 PM in the PND Auditorium. ALL our families are invited to this event and students are encouraged to attend with their parents. Please see the attached flyer entitled, PND Open House Invitation for more information. 8 th Grade Placement Exam Saturday, November 3 rd Mark the Date! The 8 th Grade Placement Exam is Saturday, Nov. 3 rd from 7:30 AM 12:00 PM. Prospective 8 th grade students will take the High School Placement Test at PND and receive their official PND Class of 2023 t-shirt. Check-in begins at 7:30 AM and testing begins at 8:00 AM. Register online at PND Shadow Visits 8 th grade students are invited to experience a day in the life of a PND student by scheduling a shadow visit. Shadow visitors will have a chance to explore the PND campus, attend classes and lunch, and learn more about the activities that PND offers. Please visit to schedule your visit.

7 COMMUNITY NEWS STEAM Events at Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center - STEAM events at Jump Trading Simulation & Education Center will be back beginning this month. STEAM Saturdays are for middle and high school students interested in the medical industry. The 2018 Fall STEAM Events Series will focus on building virtual reality experiences, brain trauma, electronics in medicine and of course, medical school! Please see the attached flyer entitled, STEAM_Fall_Course_Flyer. The flyer targets both middle and high school students and includes descriptions of the courses along with dates, times and pricing.
