2 The IGCSE as part of the academic programme at PBIS Age Year Stage 2-3 Pre Nursery 3-4 Nursery 4-5 Reception Foundation Stage Internationally recognised At the beginning of Year 10 PBIS students make choices about which subjects they will study for their first international qualification, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). This certificate is awarded by an examining board in the United Kingdom. The IGCSE has been used for 25 years by over 5000 schools in over 140 countries. It is the world s most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. It is recognised by leading universities and employers worldwide, and is an international passport to progression and success. It is administered by Cambridge International Examinations and is a rigorous and diverse qualification, based on the English National Curriculum s GCSE qualifications. Internationally recognised and respected, it provides an excellent academic grounding for further study. The IGCSE is designed to be accessible to students with a wide range of abilities. 3 A broad and balanced programme Science, Coordinated sciences, Students are encouraged to get The subjects available to students in Years 10 and 11 have been carefully selected with the intention of providing a broad and balanced curriculum. Our principle is to allow students to acquire a sound base from which they can progress to the International Baccalaureate, either the Diploma or Careers Programme. As well as studying English, Maths, recreational Physical Education (PE) and Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE), PBIS choose additional subjects selected from; Art and Design, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Computer Drama, Economics, Enterprise, French, Geography, German, Global Perspectives, History, Information Communication Technology, Physics, Physical Education, Psychology, Russian and Spanish. Subjects are grouped together into blocks and PBIS teachers will guide students through their subject choices in the second half of Year 9. A separate booklet showing the subject option blocks is published by PBIS. Grades The exam results are published as grades ranging from A to G, with high achieving students gaining an A*. To ensure that students are prepared for the examinations, they are continually assessed during the course of their studies using the A to G scale of achievement. Moving on A comprehensive transition programme which supports students in making their IB subject choices is organised as a part of the tutor time programme. Students are also encouraged to think about their future careers when they complete the IB programme. The transition concludes with the Bridging Programme which is designed to prepare students for the level of work that they will be expected to complete in the IB program. 4 What does the IGCSE lead to? The successful completion of the IGCSE studies enables students to start their IB programme in Year 12 in PBIS. PBIS offers two strands of the IB Programme to cater for students from a range of backgrounds and abilities; IB Diploma Programme - a rigorous, academically challenging and balanced programme designed to prepare students for success at university and life beyond. IB Careers Programme - a programme designed for students that are interested in pursuing a careers related education which can lead them to university but can also lead them directly in the world of work.
