7 Can I still do the Diploma Programme if I haven t studied a language? Spanish ab initio Ab initio language courses are aimed at students with no or very little prior knowledge.

9 The Core Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Extended Essay (EE) Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS)

10 What is TOK? TOK = Theory of Knowledge An opportunity to reflect philosophically on the diversity of knowledge and the way in which individuals learn. You develop higher order critical thinking strategies and reflect on How do we know something is true? Assessed with an essay and an oral presentation.

11 What is the EE? EE = Extended Essay A 4000 word essay allowing students the opportunity to investigate a topic of special interest. It familiarises students with independent research and writing skills. Choose a topic from subjects of interest

12 What is CAS? Creativity, Activity and Service A range of activities allowing students to share their special talents, develop as compassionate citizens and appreciate a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Goal oriented, reflective, participation & organisation. Under guidance of a supervisor.

14 Assessment in the IBDP Written examinations at the end of the 2 years (Often a series of shorter papers) Internal Assessment These tasks are marked by the teacher and are subject to external moderation External Assessment marked by IB examiners Assessment is criterion based and not comparative to other students

15 A Score out of 45 All 6 subjects are scored out of 7 Up to 3 extra points from TOK and EE A total score out of 45 The Diploma is awarded to students who achieve a minimum of 24 points subject to a number of completion conditions.

22 The SA Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme The scheme aims to encourage students to strengthen their preparation for university studies. A Group 2 Second Language subject English A Language and Literature (SL or HL) Mathematics (SL or HL) Further Mathematics (HL) 2 points per subject up to a maximum of 4 points

23 Applying to interstate Universities Each state has its own Tertiary Admissions Centre and require individual applications. VTAC = Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre, UAC = University Admissions Centre covers NSW and ACT Some courses may have other requirements e.g. interview, audition, portfolio, pre-admissions test e.g. UMAT All universities, including SA, have pre-requisites that need to be checked carefully. In SA students have 6 preferences in other states there are more preferences because there are more universities. Each state application is independent of the others.

24 Applying to overseas Universities There are organisations that assist in this process e.g. Education USA, based in Melbourne, can help students apply to individual universities in the USA. All applications to UK universities are made through UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). Applications are based on ATAR scores, academic history, and might include interviews, personal statements, preadmission tests. IBDP students are treated favourably. Students must drive their own research and applications.

IBDP Subjects offered are subject to viable class sizes, and some courses may therefore not proceed on campus if enrolments are below these levels.
