3 Panther Pathways Panther Pathways is a required course for all 8 th grade students. The class focuses on career exploration and planning, health, and technology applications. Students prepare their 4 year plan and make course selections for high school through Career Cruising software during the spring semester.

5 REQUIRED COURSES Choose 1 from each of the following areas: Social Studies US History Pre-AP History Science Science Pre-AP Science English/Language Arts Mathematics English Math Pre-AP English Pre-AP Math Pre-AP Alg 1 A parent signature is required for ALL Pre-AP classes.

6 Math In order to be in Pre-AP Algebra 1 in 8 th grade, you must: -Have successfully completed Pre-AP Pre-Algebra in 7 th grade OR -Take and pass a CBE this summer for 8 th grade math with a minimum score of an 80. (See your counselor for more details.)

8 Pre-AP Class Requirements Pre-AP 8 th Grade Math Uses the 8 th grade curriculum More in-depth & rigorous 7 th Grade Pre-AP Math is NOT a prerequisite Pre-AP Algebra 1 High school credit Students will take Algebra 1 EOC Entry into course is based on successful completion of Pre-AP Pre- Algebra in 7 th grade OR by passing a CBE for 8 th grade math (minimum score of 80 is required). Pre-AP English Summer Reading requirement - The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and Night by Elie Wiesel will be read together as a class later in the year Pre-AP History Independent work required outside of class (critical thinking& in-depth analysis) History Fair participation is optional Pre-AP Science Writing assignments required High Level Math Skills required Science Fair participation is optional

9 Three Elective Courses You may choose athletics or a physical education class, but it is NOT required unless you delayed your middle school requirement of one PE course in 7 th grade. A remediation class for math and/or reading will replace elective(s) if STAAR standard is not met. (INSIGHTS MATH or INSIGHTS READING)

10 Electives Indicate the order of preference for your elective classes by numbering them Your top 3 choices will be placed in your schedule. However, be happy with 4, 5 and 6 because they might end up in your schedule.

17 PALS You must complete a PALS application (Google Doc), turn in your essay and a copy of your report card by March 24 th. Go to Ms. Hesser s webpage and click on the 2017/2018 PALs Application. Additional criteria that will be evaluated: *Teacher recommendation(s) *Scored essays *Students must have achieved a 70 or above in all core 7 th grade subjects *Students must have less than 2 demerits *Students must be very trustworthy and follow school rules Top 50 applications will be included in an interview panel

24 MMS Course Catalog If you don t have internet access at home, you can save the course catalog to your ipad. Open the PDF of the course catalog while connected to the internet at school. Save to ibooks anything in ibooks is accessible without wifi.
